Poll shows Americans want to see Romney's tax returns

(CNN) – A majority of Americans say presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney should release income tax information beyond the two years he's already disclosed.

The USA Today/Gallup survey showed 54% of those surveyed felt Romney should release tax returns from additional years, compared to 37% who said Romney should not release more returns.

Romney has released his tax return from 2010, and an estimate for his 2011 information. He filed for an extension on submitting his taxes in April, and has vowed to release the full return when the documents are finalized and filed.

Democrats, and some Republicans, have urged Romney to disclose more of his tax information. Democrats say additional returns will clear up questions about offshore accounts and his rate of income tax, while Republicans say it would be politically advantageous to disclose more information. President Barack Obama's campaign immediately blasted out the poll Thursday as an indication their campaign push is working.

In Thursday's poll, 30% of self-identified Republicans said Romney should release more of his returns, compared to 75% of Democrats and 53% of Independents who said the same.

The survey also showed respondents were divided on whether or not the tax return information was relevant to the campaign. Forty-seven percent said having more tax return information from Romney would be "largely irrelevant" to making a decision at the voting booth, compared to 44% who said the returns would provide ""legitimate information that helps voters make better decisions."

The Gallup/USA Today poll was taken by telephone on Wednesday from 539 adults. The sampling error was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

The majority doesn't want smoke and mirrors, CNN. The majority wants to talk about the economy. THE ECONOMY....it isn't what CNN wants to talk about. Why doesn't CNN talk about Obama's health records or trancripts being released? Fast and Furios? CNN ....could you be anymore obvious about your political views?

You can't put non-publicly traded shares into an IRA, precisely because you can grossly undervalue them at at deposit time.

@ PMorgan....I'm sure Romney sat down with his accountant and went over Everything in minute detail....especially this insignificant piece of information. This is why accountants are hired! This is why they do what they do! You guys (libs) really need to get a life beyond this puny blog world you live in.....Sniffit, Larry L (Georgetown, Tx.) California Woman, Thinkagain, The Real(?) Tom Paine, Rudy in NY etc.... Give yourself a break before you explode.

And yet Romney is tied or ahead in the polls... smoke and mirrors isn't working lefties!
If it was "smoke & mirrors" (I see you're still watching Fox News) Romney would be glad to relaese his returns to make doubters look like morons... sorta like you "birthers". This issue won't die and Romney is fading each day as people realize what a crook they're considering as the Republican candidate. He does have the one quality you people most require – he's white.

Romney gets questions about some of the practices of Bain and he claims he wasn't there. He can make all this go away with a release of his tax returns and prove he gained NO income from Bain. He refuses to release his tax returns and whines to the media. "You're so unfair!" he claims yet he condoned Trump's birther attacks.

This is important. This is the only position that Romney talks about with regards to his suitability for president and he refuses to come clean.

What is he trying to hide? This makes him totally unfit to be president. He will not win if he doesn't release his taxes and a lot of this is coming from Republicans!

    Rudy NYC
I understand that it can be done like this. Start a company where you are sole owner and share holder. Create an IRA that purchases those stock shares for a penny. Over time the shares increase twofold, then tenfold and more, by putting money into the company. Before you know it those 100,000 shares that you purchased for a penny each are now worth ten dollars each, or $100 million dollars. Easy as pie
Well, God bless America! Thank Rudy. I'm off to take stock in myself...

The people in this poll who say that Robmey should not release his tax returns are being disingenuous at best. They obviously know their candidate is flawed and they are in denial. Or they are dems who know that the longer Mitt refuses the worse it looks for him.

Watch his facial expressions when he talks about this. Pay particular attention to the right side of his face. He is fighting so hard to keep from sneering that he forgets to control his tone of voice and the contempt comes out anyway.

The point is not whether he is or is not legally forced to disclose his tax returns, nor even whether he was legally forced to use money for any particular purpose. The real point is: how did he react when faced with the questions we all encounter in life?

For example, shall I squeeze every last drop of blood since I am allowed to do so, or should I consider others in whatever small way? Shall I hide my money because it isn't illegal, or shall I support my own country by investing here? Shall I say what I really think (if I think at all) or shall I say what the audience wants to hear no matter what that might be?

In my opinion, Romney's responses to the important questions are very troubling. At best, he behaves like a child caught lying and trying to deny his bad behavior. At best, he behaves like a sociopath, with nothing actually on the inside to give him any sort of compass.

I think the term 'vulture capitalist' is inaccurate. He is really more of a soulless vampire capitalist.

Don't you think by now the IRS would done something to Romney if he did something illegal? If Obama has proof than let him bring it out and have Holder charge Romney with the crime.
Many things might be legal but really, really slimy and unethical. How will American taxpayers feel if he paid no taxes? How will shareholders feel if he kept information from them regarding money extracted from the corporation? What about a slight-of-hand spreading income out between family members? Americans don't want a vulture capitalist who simply walks a very fine line between legal and illegal – able to do so because of a team of slippery tax lawyers. They want an ethical President – like President Obama.

when 47% of americans didn't pay taxes last year I think it is more than warranted that we make sure miilionaires are not protecting money and paying their full share. Everything about Mitt's Tax returns screams that he is hiding something. Obviously McCain picked Palin for a reason over Mitt. I am sure he was scared what the public would think when they saw Mitt's tax returns. I think it speaks volumes into how he would run the country if elected.

I am sure that his tax information is none of my business and don't think it's any of yours...........
Oh! come on, it is the big deal and it our solely business as voters. For any job we hold, what comes first is trust. It doesn't matter how expert or intelligent a person is. The trust is gained by showing it. This is why employers care much about the "first impression". What comes later is an added advantage.

Memo to Mr. Romney: Your refusal makes you look dishonest. I know that the Cayman Island and Swiss bankers ask no questions and that's your msitake. Contrary to your perception, this is not about money but about law, respect, transparency and honesty. This is not your private busines, you owe it to the people to tell the truth, unless you renounce your ambitions for public office. See, the key word here is "public".
