Obama ad uses different tone in drawing contrast with Romney

(CNN) – President Barack Obama says in a new television spot that the economic plan favored by his rival Mitt Romney is a tired approach that would only favor the wealthy.

The Obama campaign says the minute-long ad, called "The Choice," will air in nine battleground states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Obama's campaign said on Sunday they would not air any ads in Colorado through Friday in light of the shooting there last week. "The Choice" will begin airing in the state on Saturday, the Obama campaign tells CNN.

In the spot, Obama looks directly into the camera and tells voters, "Over the next four months, you have a choice to make."

The president says the choice isn't just between Democrats and Republicans, or between himself and Romney.

"It's a choice between two very different plans for our country," Obama explains. "Governor Romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. Roll back regulations on big banks. And he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit. But you know what? We tried that top down approach. It's what caused the mess in the first place."

By contrast, Obama says his plan would "ask the wealthy to pay a little more so we can pay down our debt in a balanced way, so that we can afford to invest in education, manufacturing and home-grown American energy."

Obama concludes by laying out the stakes he sees in November's election: "Sometimes politics can seem very small. But the choice you face, it couldn't be bigger."

The latest spot from the Obama campaign is a sharp contrast from an ad that has been running for the past week that hits Romney for reports he outsourced jobs as a private equity executive. The ad uses graphics of various news reports over video of Romney singing "America the Beautiful."

Other spots from Obama's campaign have been similarly negative, including profiling companies that were closed after being taken over by Bain Capital, the private equity firm run by Romney.

Responding to the ad, Romney's campaign attacked the president's record on job creation and said he was "unqualified" to lead the country.

“President Obama believes that government creates jobs, not hard-working entrepreneurs and small-business owners. Not only are his ‘you didn’t build that’ comments insulting to job creators, but they also reflect how unqualified he is to lead our country toward an economic recovery. Instead of meeting with his Jobs Council, he is busy holding fundraisers, playing golf and trying to tear down Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney will never be too busy to focus on jobs and the economy and it will be his top priority as president,” said Amanda Henneberg, Romney campaign spokesperson.

julie - blacks do not vote simply b/c Obama is black.we vote the one closet to our interests/issues
Do tell... Just what interests/issues are those? Given Obama's abysmal perfromance with the economy and jobs, especially in the black community, what interests/issues supercede having a job?

"HE INHERITED A SURPLUS FROM CLINTON". To all you bleeding hart liberals out there. Clinton did not have a surplus of money. The government still had a deficit. The "SURPLUS" that you are all screaming about was monies not spent from the last balanced budget this country had which by the way was passed by a congress with a republican majority in the house and the senate so please quit misstating the CLINTON SURPLUS stuff.

What drivel! Obama has no plan. His last attempt to propose a budget garnered ZERO votes! How can you blame that on the GOP? Let America be America again.

@Forward into Obama blah blah blah
Interesting that you would admonish "Julie" for her statement when in fact when Blacks had no choice but to vote for Whites there was nothing said and because we had no choice that meant we made educated decisions of which White President would best serve the country. I hope this makes sense to you.

Say there Albert......how can you say it is Obama's fault there is no compromise in D.C. when the GOP leaders stated the day he was sworn in that their goal was to ensure he was a one termer, and that they would block anything he tried to do? He has reached out to them many times, only to have his hand bitten. How is this not the fault of the GOP who openly decided to put party ahead of country?

Could if be the Democrats don't just prance out a few Oreos at election time and forget about all those racist signs at the Tea party rallies? Could it be Democrats don't forget how Republicans and their "job creators" got us into this mess during the Bush debacle? How about the many racist comment we've seen for the last few years by people like you?

Hopefully the Obama campaign will start now to focus on all of the helpful things this administration has accomplished and ask Romney what he plans to do instead. If he repeals the health care bill, what is he replacing it with, when will it take effect and how will he pay for it? Will it be similar to RomneyCare and ObamaCare? If he plans on cutting the government more then that means less policemen, firefighters, teachers, etc. That is cutting jobs, not creating jobs isn't it? If he refuses to raise some taxes how is he going to pay for all of the necessary programs and infrastructure the country so badly needs? Won't that raise the deficit? What are his real immigration plans? No flip-flopping, what does he plan to do? Would he go to war unilaterally like Iraq or would he try to build international support for any interventions? Would he deregulate the banks and give Wall Street more freedom to do as they want as they did in the last administration? Would he fight to suppress gay rights, women's rights and minority rights as his campaign seems to suggest? How can Romney say the country is in worse shape than it was when the stock market has rebounded from 6000 to almost 13,000? Instead of losing 700,000 jobs a month , they are being slowly CREATED. The housing market seems to have bottomed out. The US did not go into a recession. Despite the histerics and rants from the right, the President has actually done a lot for the country and deserves four more years to complete the comeback.

President Obama can and should run on his accomplishments which are many! Just google the information up. As for Mitt speaking at the VFW, President Obama, Michelle and Jill Biden have done more for our military than any administration has. Remove Congress and President Obama will have this country atlease half way turned around. Smacking Mitt won't do anything because he has no plans. I would say his party knows him well so why should I vote for anyone whose own party hates?

Just heard Romney speech praising the military to the VFW, etc. Just curious since the wealthy hide their sons during the call to duty for the most part. Has any of Romny's 5 yes 5 sons answered the call during the past & present conflicts, etc?! I don't recall anyone making mention of this critical subject the wealthy & their politicians with media carefully avoid. BTW...Yes I served 5yrs in the USMC 58-63. Does anybody know Romney's & 5 sons MILITARY history??? Many thanks, Tony

to California Gary[s] who say this:
"...how can you say it is Obama's fault there is no compromise in D.C. when the GOP leaders stated the day he was sworn in that their goal was to ensure he was a one termer, and that they would block anything he tried to do?..."

From a pragmatical point of view, it does not matter who's fault it is. What matters is that the government does not work. even if you think that GOP is bad, the President has to be able to work with them, simply because there is no other way. Here is an example: you want to buy a car. you think this car is the best for your family, but your spouse hates it and would not change her/his mind. you have two choices: either find another car or another spouse. right now it is clear that after next elections about half of the Congress will be controlled by GOP and next President will have to work with both parties.

I guess no one is paying attention to why Romney wasn't too popular of a governor in Mass.
Aside from his healthcare bill(and thank you for the model romney that you try to disown now)
he didn't do too well in mass. They got him out pretty quick and back into dems hands.
and no way is he severely conservative-you don't get elected in NE if you are "severely conservative".
I guess in a few days he will be a moderate for the sake of independent votes. A voter just cannot
keep track of him. America be smart and vote Obama!

....Then why did Obama sign the Obama tax Cuts for the Rich? Why is he and the Democrats trying to extend all the tax cuts that are scheduled to expire Jan. 2013? Sounds like Obama doesn't know what he is doing.

So if constantly raising taxes is the key to prosperity, why are all those countries going bankrupt in Europe?
Because Obama wanted to demonstrate beyond any shadow of a doubt that those policies are a failure. You've said so yourself on countless occassions that his policies are a failure. I agree.

Why are so many countries in Europe getting deeper and deeper into economic trouble? Because after the global markets collapsed in 2008, those same countries had conservative leaders who enacted draconian spending cuts and wound up starving their own economies. They enacted they same policies that conservatives here are advocating. You always look at Europe. I do. Do you? Take a good look at what draconian spending cuts will do to an economy that has stalled.

Apparently you weren't paying attention to what your Tea Party Congress was doing when President Obama extended the tax cuts...they threatened to cut off unemployment benefits to many who were relying on them to get by if the tax cuts weren't extended so our President did what he thought was the right thing and signed the extension to get the unemployment benefits. Where did you get that he & the Dems are trying to extend all the tax cuts – President has been saying since Day 1 those making under $250,000 should be extended only until the economy picks up.

Lib: President Obama has not done anything on his own. What accomplishments are you talking about? All he has done is receive $$ from donnors because the Nobel peace prize was another charade. What was his cause for such a recognition? He has been "made" by others to occupy a possition and serve as a puppet to destroy this country.
