Poll: Are Obama Bain attacks hurting Romney?

Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney's campaign is pointing to a new national poll that suggests the attacks by President Barack Obama's campaign on the GOP challenger's business record are not working.

According to a USA Today/Gallup national survey released Monday, 63% of Americans say Romney's business background, including his years at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he co-founded, would cause him to make good decisions in handling the nation's economy over the next four years, with 29% saying his background would cause him to make bad decisions.

For more than two months, the Obama campaign has fired away at Romney's business record, highlighting reports that Romney remained CEO of Bain Capital after January 1999, when he has repeatedly said he left to head the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. At the heart of the debate are companies that were acquired by Bain after 1999, which in some cases resulted in jobs being outsourced to countries with lower labor costs. The Obama campaign and a pro-Obama super PAC have hammered Romney in ads for months, labeling him an outsourcer.

The Romney campaign has responded by touting a nonpartisan fact-check by FactCheck.Org have poked holes in the "outsourcer" claims, and recently launched a new offensive accusing the president of outsourcing jobs through his administration's trade policies and loan guarantee program.

A CBS News/New York Times poll released last week indicate that six in ten said Romney's tenure at Bain Capital would not matter to their vote, with 23% saying it would make them less likely to vote for Romney and 14% saying it would make them more likely to vote for the presumptive GOP nominee. The Obama campaign points to polling in some of the battleground states where the spots are running that indicate that Romney's unfavorable rating has edged up.

According to the USA Today/Gallup poll, 54% say Romney has the personality and leadership qualities a president should have, edging up a point from February. Fifty-seven percent say Obama has the personality and leadership qualities needed in a president.

While both campaigns and the independent groups supporting the two candidates have launched a record setting amount of negative ads, the survey indicates that a majority of the public says neither candidate has been attacked unfairly.

According to the poll, Romney has the edge when it comes to being able to "get things done," while the president has a two-to-one advantage over Romney on likeability, and has a double digit lead on the former Massachusetts governor on understanding the problems Americans face on a daily basis.

The USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday, with 1,030 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

the problem is not Bain, let me assure you that Oct-Nov will be fun, people are getting aware of what Mitt stands for, the pool should not deceive anyone, we are going to specific questions about what Willard believes in, what does he stand for, how can he make the economy better or is it the rhetoric that Obama is bad, elect me syndrome, what can he do? or is it to deregulate the entire system and make it more favorable to polluters and the wall street, then crashing the main street and here comes another recession? lets get to specifics.

If anyone else wants 4 more years of the following:
    (1) Higher taxes
    (2) The WORST climate for job hiring/creation since the Carter days
    (3) A time where those who choose to be gay/lesbian, & ILLEGALS get more rights than the everyday, legal-born USA working taxpayers
    (4) More wasted 'stimulus' money on worthless programs
    (5) Food prices, gas prices, etc – up, up, up
    (6) A climate where our rights as USA citizens are being slowly taken away day by day
    (7) A climate where our educational standards are slowly being eroded by 'political correctness'
    (8) A climate where 'political correctness' dominates over common sense
    (9) A climate where our 'great' congresspeople/senators/Prez have outlawed God in almost every aspect in America, and if they keep on,(especially if the Demonrats take over) eventually they'll start persecuting the churches
    (10) A climate where the Prez and those in the Demonrat party could care less about Israel – in the Word of God, it plainly says that God blesses those who bless Israel, and curses individuals/nations who curse Israel

If you want all of that for 4 more years, vote for Obama. NOT ME!!!! I don't care what race he is – anyone who chooses to do what this Prez has done needs to GO – FAST, QUICK, AND IN A HURRY!!!

No they dont hurt Romney. What they are doing is helping galvaning the independent voters who are getting tired of the candidates refusing to focus their campaigns on matter most to America. The Economy, Unemployment & a Balanced Budget. As long as both candidates continue to waste time on smoke screen topics such as birth certificates, tax records, where & when someone worked, palying golf or basketball, they will continue to lose the respect & vote of the independents who are no brainwashed by either party. We are the votes that count

There's no doubt it's working. Romney cannot speak to taxes or to his experience as a business man without opposition. This was a genius move on the part of Obama's team. There are more questions in Mitt's corner than there are answers, and it isn't going to help him one bit.

If Milt doesn't show a few more years of tax returns I think he'll lose. But if he shows a few more years of tax returns I have a feeling he'll REALLY LOSE.

The Bussiness man has allot to answer for when he says he will show Taxes for 2 years and thats all YOU PEOPLE need to see. Not good enough ! And the Bain Capitol thing ? Yes it is concerning when your road to wealth has been on the backs of working people who were used, lives destroyed, complete loss of their re-tirement,job loss, homes lost ext. If this is how you gained your millions then yes that is not what President should represent here in the U.S.A. Let us not forget the TAX thing in the Caman Islands and Switzerland and abroad. There's only 1 reason his Money is there ! TAX evasion period ! Besides that ? He is NOT going to be elected anyhow.

    – Working at McDonalds does not 'cause' a person to make good dietary decisions.
    – Working at an automotive plant does not 'cause' a person to make good driving decisions.
    – Working at a nuclear plant for 20 years does not 'cause' a person to make good decisions in nuclear warfare.
    – Working for a venture capital organization does not 'cause' a person to make good economic decisions for the American people.

It's not what you know, it what you do with what you know. If anything Mitt Romney would be in a far better postion to do what he does best – Line his own pockets with clever financial trickery. How about those tax returns Mitt? Show us how you've handled your own money so we can judge for ourselves how you 'might' handle OUR money:)

oh my goodness the overvalued business background. A good accountant/cpa is a must if a business is
to survive but that does not mean at all that someone is pure genuis when it comes to making
long range decisions. I have been a witness to big corporations for a long time and i can tell you
that an ability to work numbers does not always result in sound long range business decisions. Sit in any meeting
in corp. america and i can assure you one thing. Some people at the table are very sharp and there will
without a doubt be others at the table and you will wonder how in the world they got their foot in the door.
We need to know more about romney-a lot more before we start touting him as a genuis turn-a-round miracle kid.
