Obama says Romney 'knowingly twisting my words'

OAKLAND, California (CNN) – After taking a break from his re-election bid after last week’s Colorado movie theater shooting, President Barack Obama eased back to the campaign trail Monday by holding several fundraisers in California.

He began his first fundraising remarks by mentioning his trip to Aurora, Colorado, on Sunday to comfort the victims’ families.

“I spent time with the families, and the medical staff, the first responders. And sometimes when bad things happen, horrible things happen, I think it’s easy for us to slip into despair. And yet if you had spent some time, like I did, with those people, who had faced down just unimaginable pain with strength and grace, it would make you extraordinarily optimistic about America,” the president told a fundraiser in Piedmont.

Obama attended two fundraisers in the San Francisco area. Democratic activists Quinn Delaney and Wayne Jordan hosted the first event for about 60 people at their home in Piedmont.

Among the guests were two former players in the Solyndra investigation: venture capitalist Steve Westly and former Dept. of Energy official Matt Rogers. Westly was one of the people who warned the administration about its investment in the failed green energy company.

When the company failed, the administration lost $535 million in taxpayer dollars.

Rogers was an energy department adviser who handled some of the stimulus money in the loan guarantee process.

Later, Obama took part in a larger event at the Fox Theatre in Oakland where he spoke to about 2,000 people.

He launched into criticism of his Republican opponent Mitt Romney and the latter’s recent attacks on the president’s remarks about small businesses.

“Earlier today, Governor Romney was at it again, knowingly twisting my words around to suggest I don’t value small business,” he said. “In politics, we all tolerate a certain amount of spin. I understand those are the games that get played in political campaigns. Although when folks just omit entire sentences of what you said, they start slicing and dicing, you may have gone a little over the edge there.”

“I believe with all my heart that it is the drive and ingenuity of Americans to start businesses to lead to their success. I always have and I always will,” Obama added. “The ability for somebody who is willing to work hard, for them to put their sweat and sacrifices and to turn their idea into a profitable business, that’s the nature of America.”

He also continued his attacks on Romney’s economic experience and outsourcing of jobs.

“My opponent's entire claim, his whole plan for economic renewal, is more tax cuts for the wealthy," Obama said. "Eliminate regulations for banks and corporations that we put in place after the crisis. Cutting more investments in things like education and research, and somehow this is supposed to create jobs and prosperity for everybody. That’s what Romney believes. That's what his allies in Washington believe. Here's the problem. We tried that and it didn't work.”

Obama continues his campaign trip Tuesday with stops in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, for five more campaign events.

I have no problem with the government supporting technology that advances the country because that helps the whole. The problem that the GOP has is it is short sighted. New technology (in energy or computers or whatever) has a government base. The internet and touch screens were funded in the start by the DoD. We can't let the Chinese be the only one doing this "green" energy expansion. We need to be in the game as well.

Obama needs o know that Ronny controls 65 percent of the white voters, which makes up 95 percent of their entire electorate, they can say do anything and it will be credible. these rich folks doesn't have to follow any rules, and still will face no reprocussion, imagine any dems doing and saying half the stuff, the repubs do or say, god it's good to be the majority in this country.

And there is no twisting words on your part. I find it funny that people from both political parties believe that their party is honest and the other party are a bunch of liars. Wake up. All politicians will say anything to get re-elected. They will promise you things that they know they can't do but it makes you think they are there for you. And when they don't do them and need to be re-elected they say that they will get it done after they are re-elected. Seriously look at all politicians campaign promises and they what they actually accomplished.

Why has the media allowed Romney to get away with all the lies, including this one? This race should not be anywhere close, but you know, good old media is bent on calling it close, with absolutely nothing "wow" done by Romney. Greedy Media has to make money, I guess.

So the spinner in chief doesn't like it when his own words are used against him; well the truth hurts I guess. At the core of the President's statement he simply said, "If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." He gives credit to your teacher or the government.

How about the President gives credit to one's parents who gave them their drive and strong strong self reliance and entrepreneurail spirt. Nah, that can't be right because it reinforces that you don't need a nannystate.

Awww poor baby. Like Obama hasn't done it to everyone. I do love the line where Obama said that entrepreneurs haven['t done anything, and they didn't build their own business. I realize Obama depends on the government for his living, but there are people out there who are very intelligent and creative. They DID do it themselves!

It didn't take long for him to politicize the shootings and fires, did it? Didn't think it would.

Its ok for Obama to twist words, spread lies about Romney and Bain Capital, but now that he is ggetting a taste of his own medicine, he is crying like a baby.

Romney knows that businesses are not built in a vacuum. He is lying again when he insists on ignoring Obama's message.

Still waiting on those tax returns...

Actually Obama, the entire speech is right there in front of the people. It is not twisted and very straight forward. You said what you believe and the people are listening.
My hats off to all of the small business owners out there. We all, except for the president, acknowledge your sacrifices in pursuit of the American dream and appreciate your contribution to the stability of our country.

Most of us know Mr. Romney took those words out of context. Heck, that's what the Republicans in Congress do. Mr. Romney would fit right in, if he was elected as president .. though I cringe at the thought. Keep on working, President Obama. Keep striving, I am with you. I will be with you because you have done so much for us already, even against
all odds. We will help you overcome the obstructions .. this November!

When is the media going to start holding politicians accountable for spreading lies. Mitt Romney knowingly lied and will continue to do so if not held accountable. He needs to be called out by the media.

Lies and editing are all the Romney campaign have left. Gov. Romney can’t run on his record as the governor who was 47th in job creation and since he cannot even tell us when he worked at Bain, or where he has invested his money he cannot run as a businessman. So this is what is left – abject hatred and bigotry. His whole campaign will be ‘If you despise the fact that a black man is more accomplished than you, vote for me; I am white.’
