Romney's Olympics false start

London (CNN) - Mitt Romney told British leaders he hopes to take in an Olympics swimming competition during his time in London. With no pool in sight, the Republican presidential candidate has already made waves of his own.

Early Thursday morning in the U.K., while much of the U.S. political world was fast asleep, the British press had seized on comments the GOP contender made about London's preparations for the Olympics.

"You know it's hard to know just how well it will turn out," Romney said in an interview with NBC News Wednesday evening. "There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials – that obviously is not something which is encouraging."

"Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment?" Romney asked. "That's something which we only find out once the Games actually begin."

The headline on the main page for London's Daily Telegraph news site was not what the Romney campaign had in mind for this visit: "Mitt Romney questions whether Britain is ready for Olympic Games."

During a visit to London's chief Olympic stadium, British Prime Minister David Cameron was asked for a response to Romney's comments. Cameron put diplomacy aside and took direct issue with Romney's remarks.

"I think we will show the whole world not just that we come together as a United Kingdom but also we're extremely good at welcoming people from across the world," Cameron said to reporters just hours before his own scheduled visit with the GOP contender.

"I will obviously make those points to Mitt Romney. I look forward to meeting him," Cameron added, mentioning the Republican candidate by name.

In what sounded like a jab at Romney's stewardship of the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Cameron appeared to draw a contrast between staging the Games in London versus Utah.

"We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere," Cameron said.

After his meeting with Cameron, Romney praised British preparations for the Games. Romney then sidestepped a question about whether he intended any criticism of London in his initial comments.

"I'm very delighted with the prospects of a highly successful Olympic Games. What I see shows imagination and forethought and a lot of organization and expect the Games to be highly successful," Romney said.

That may have been enough to satisfy the British press. The headline on the Telegraph's site after his meeting with Cameron: "Mitt Romney seeks to play down London 2012 comments"

Wow 16 hours abroad and you manage to offend the international community 2 times already. That has got to be some kind of a record pace. Also Mitt said he enjoyed spending time in the Downing St. backside. (LOLLOLLOL) Is that allowed in Mormonism? BTW it's BACK GARDEN. Why doesn't Mitt just flip off Russia and say that Jewish people need to learn to love Jesus and come on home. This trip will be like watching an empty vegas hotel implode in slow motion.

He was also PASSED OVER for vice president and yet some people think he's presidential material now? Please. Just remember, it took the president (you know the community organizer) only a short time to achieve what Willard has spent a lifetime trying to learn and the president didn't have name recognition or money. I'll stick with the person who learns the quickest and does the best job.
    I'll co-sign THAT!! BAM!!!

For some "unkown" reason CNN refuse to post my congratulations to you.
I remember that it was just a little over a month ago that you were posting on this very site in the most broken english how you were an immigrant to this country. As a matter of fact I clearly rcollect you calling yourself an "ex-immigrant". Quite endearing. Your recent posts, however, have left me astounded. You must've been studying night and day as your atrocious grammar, and lack of syntax, right along with the "fake" accent we could almost "hear have miraculously dissappeared.

Are right-wingers so ashamed of their Party and their presumptive nominee that they feel compelled to change their names on a regular basis?

Not surprised!!!!!! He is trying so hard to copy President Obama, it is just pathetic. I am so happy David Cameron (btw:conservative) just put him in his place. All his money cannot bring him personality and integrity. And Americans will vote for him, please.

Four and the Door claims Mitt is "always honest". And that my friends, is why I'm always calling the right-wingers insanely ignorant and delusional. Romney is a serial liar, the biggest liar to ever run for President.

Jeff, Granted, I too read that the Olympics in London were not going as smoothly as hoped for . BUT,!. when you are a guest you do not insult your host! Romney invited himself over there, and it is not his place to tell them he would have done a better job. It;s like you being invited to your boss' home for dinner and complaining about the quality of the food. Not done, not classy..Poor form.

Gather round, all you conservatives, and listen closely. I am tired of the implication that a community organizer is somehow less intelligent or competent than anyone else. I'm tired of the snarky air quotes you hear around the word every time a conservative (remember Sarah Palin's condescending tone of voice?) says the word. A community organizer is right there on the street with the real people, the poor people, the people who need help. A community organizer solves real problems with the people, helps them achieve what they maybe couldn't by themselves, helps them with real life. It you had experience solving problems at the community level, think how much better you could solve problems at the national level. Actually, I think every single politician should be required to spend a year as a community organizer and maybe then they would have a clue how real people function and realize we're not all millionaires with health insurance and medical coverage, etc. etc. etc. We'd have a politician who understood how most Americans live.

Once again, Mittens Rawmoney proves beyond any shadow of doubt that he is a ham handed, utter incompetent without an ounce of diplomatic skills. He's obviously even less prepared to be President than GWBush was in 2000. Shame on us if by some awful mischance we allow Mittens to win come November. He is utterly unfit.

So Mittens prefers Winston Churchill over Abraham Lincoln now. Interesting. He told a group of expats at a fundraiser in London that he would put the bust of Churchill back in the Oval Office, instead of the bust of Honest Abe (which President Obama chose when he moved in).
