Romney's son plugs 'Built By Us' merchandise jabbing at Obama remark

(CNN) - Mitt Romney's son on Saturday e-mailed supporters promoting a line of merchandise which hits continues to hit President Barack Obama over his comment to business owners that "you didn't build that."

Tagg Romney pitched the "Built By Us Collection," which includes posters, buttons, and T-shirts highlighting the remark, which Romney and other Republicans have criticized.

"Built By Us is a rallying cry, and also a celebration of the people who truly make America work," Tagg Romney said in the e-mail.

At a campaign event in Roanoke, Virginia, on July 13, Obama said: "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges.

"If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet," he continued.

Republicans seized on the comment, and the Obama campaign responded on Tuesday with an ad which said Republicans are taking his comment out of context.

"Of course Americans build their own business. Every day hardworking people sacrifice to meet a payroll, create jobs, and make our economy run. And what I said was that we need to stand behind them as America always has. By investing in education, training, roads and bridges, research and technology," Obama said in the ad.

One of the Romney campaign T-shirts reads, "Government didn't build my business, I did."

Posters, buttons, and t-shirts also read, "We Built America."

Tagg Romney said in the e-mail that "Dad understands success is not the result of government, it's the result of hardworking people who take risks, create dreams, and build lives for themselves and their families."

"I think we can all agree we need a President who embraces success, instead of demonizing it," he continued. "Dad's the man for the job."

While Romney is overseas - holding meetings with officials in London, Israel, and Poland, among other events - his campaign has continued stateside.

A series of surrogates, including several rumored possible vice presidential candidates, held events for the Romney campaign on Saturday, and several also continued to pressure Obama over his handling of the economy.

So, Tagg built these buttons and t-shirts himself? What's that? Other people teamed together to help build that for him for the campaign? Thought so.

I'm sure the young Romney also refers to us as in military duty .

All five of Mitt's sons avoided voluntary military service.

I am glad Bain Capital got $10 million loan forgiveness deal from the FDIC in 1994 so it wouldn't collaspe allowing Gov. Romney to "built it".

America was built not just by business owners, African slaves helped build America, Chinese immigrant labor helped build the inter continental railroad, Americans from all groups fought and died so that business men like Mitt Romney can make a great living in a free and democratic country. Where is the thank you to all the men and women who sacrificed in the military for the freedoms we have today. it is the men and women who lie in Arlington and the many allied cemeteries in Europe who deserve all the gratitude for our good fortune to live in a great country where the sky is the limit if your work hard.

Didn't his dad's company, Bain have to be bailed out by gov't funds, at some point!? Also, from what I recall, seems he needed gov't help for the 2002 Salt Lake Olymics! It's truly hypocritical of people like Romney, Bachmann, Palin to criticize government funding for our necessities, which are paid by our taxes, when they have reaped the rewards! Also, they call welfare for those who sincerely need it, bloat, waste & due for a cut, but want to continue government welfare for the rich, richer, richest, in the form of taxcuts & "legal" loopholes! Ever heard of the term "land poor"? Romney is promoting the "welfare rich"!!

If you think your business was successful all on your own, then try starting it in Somilia. Where you have no infrastructure to deliver your goods, no educational institutions to train your workers, and no police force to protect your business.

This coming from a family of cowards and america haters. Wonder why they have a link to Mexico. They hated America and fled to Mexico. They only came back to America because the Mexicans didn't want them. As far as I can tell no Romney served the U.S. In uniform. What can you say their dads a draft dodger so like father like sons.

Typical rich kid response. Look at me, I have money and I can promote a few t-shirts (probably manufactured off-shore) with a catchy slogan. Daddy loaned me the money from his Cayman Island trust fund so I can pull some headlines. But, like always it is more about telling a little lie to make us look so much better, while the real issues are buried. And us 'white' folk just never could believe America could be so stupid as to elect a 'black' guy as President. The real day of reckoning is coming and you will respect the office even if your kind think you can just buy us off.

Another idiot of the Romeny clan twisting things. Every educated person knows what Obama meant when he said those words. It is the infrastructure on which business success also depends on. That was not built by the business owner himself.

Are these items actually made by American? It would be really insulting if it were made in China or somewhere else other than in the US.

Mitt Romney and his sons were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. If anything Mitt's father should get the credit.

Who has " demonized" success?. I have built a small business over the last thirty years and have utilized the mail system to send and receive payments and invoices. Traveled to my jobs over roads built from my taxes....put to use the education I have received from public schools and I totally understood what Obama was talking about!!! I guess private education isn't all It's cracked up to be if Romney's kids don't get it!!!

It just tickles me to see the Romney campaign spending money to manufacture merchandise (and you can bet cash money none of it will be made in the USA) based on the campaigns lies and deceptions.

Hello, part of the problem here both for Obama and Romney is that when you take a phrase or sentence out of context yo can easily change the meaning by adding one word eg
Obama" you did not build that" convert to" You alone did not build that" and oops big difference.
Son Romney " built by us" to be pedantic he should say " was built by us" otherwise again you can add he means "outsourcing built by us" or "not always built by us"
This debate is silly because what matters is what makes a business successful are its product, service quality of both and the price. Those are the fundamental underlying economics and yes hard work of owners ( what about his workforce however small) and possibly familial support.
In the whole context of Obama's comments he is not totally wrong but left out other contributors or factors just as "built by us" does.

Romney is plugging something based on a total lie. Romney took President Obama's positive speech, edited out one sentence that had nothing to do with the message the President gave, turned into a completely false TV ad, and not one media outlet has held Romney accountable for another dishonest lying ad. Republicans do not support small business and Romney certainly does not care about products being made in America as the "pioneer of outsourcing". Romney has no credibility, has no principles, stands for nothing, and has yet to present a single solution for America's issues. He is no leader and his life has been only about corruption – as Governor where he had his hard drives from his computer removed and destroyed, as head of a corrupt Olympics where he had the financial records shredded, and lies about his tenure at Bain and the outsourcing of jobs and destruction of American companies for profit for himself. The Presidency is about standing up for ALL Americans, working for ALL Americans, and true humanity and leadership- qualities Romney has none of.

"I think we can all agree we need a President who embraces success, instead of demonizing it,"

More lies and deliberate taking of Obama'a comments out of context. I think the first name "Tagg" is ironic, since neither he, nor his Daddy, are "it."

How about some merchandise which says, "You Didn't Pay That," regarding his Daddy's tax returns?
