Cheney: Picking Palin in 2008 was a 'mistake'

(CNN) – Sen. John McCain made a mistake in 2008 by picking then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, former Vice President Dick Cheney said in an interview that aired Sunday.

Cheney led the vice presidential search for Gerald Ford in 1976, and again for George W. Bush in 2000. That last search resulted in Cheney himself being selected, and he served as Bush's number two for eight years.

On Sunday, Cheney said Palin failed to meet the number one requirement for a vice president: a readiness to step into the top job if needed.

"Based on her background, she was only governor for two years, I don't think she passed that test of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake," Cheney said in an interview with ABC News.

Cheney, who said he knows and likes Palin, argued that considerations about which demographic a potential candidate could help pull in clouded the 2008 decision to put Palin on the ticket.

"Those are important issues but they should never be allowed to override that first proposition and I think that's one of the problems that McCain had," Cheney said.

The state of the Republican Party–A guy with no heart, talking about someone with no brain, while the presumptive nominee demonstrates no courage. All they are missing now is someone named Dorothy with a little dog in tow.

Sara Palin may win beauty contests all day, but winning a presidential election just isn't going to happen for her no matter how far she unbuttons her blouse. Most of her speeches were written by other people and her ideas were by other people (one being her husband) so that when she gave speeches an image of a ditzy blonde came to mind. She never convinced me that she could win in a debate that required a free thinking mind and if she ever got elected I was going to vote for Britney Spears for president. What's the difference??

So exactly why would CNN consider anything Dick Cheney says as being relevant? Like Rush Limbaugh, he simply needs to be ignored.

Cheney might be right for once, but he wasn't the best choice either and besides Palin looked pretty good to McCain from behind. LOL

  13. Hey, Mittens, got any more of those 100K Bain jobs for doing nothing? 'Call Me, Maybe'?

Well there you have it America, admission from the highest GOP mountain of - "leadership" that the party came first and the country was a distant second.

They finally admit that they chose a personality who anyone not blinded by GOP racism knew in the first 2 days, that Palin highest mental capacity was the involuntary brain stem activity that keeps her black heart beating and that nasal whining breath pumping.

And YET they still were going to lie to America and say she was competent!!

Hope this proves that the GOP was always and will always be about PARTY FIRST and COUNTRY WAY LOWER!

Well, I guess the worst VP in history would recognize another who would have been a bad choice. I hope Cheney keeps talking and gets in front of the cameras as much as possible so Americans can be reminded of the dreaded Bush years and realize they don't want to go back there! Obama 2012!

On the plus side, the first step to recovery is admitting you were wrong in the first place.

The GOP should sign up for the "12 step program to truth".

Now you admit it? If you wouldn't have thought women were too stupid to look at credentials you might have realized that we don't vote for people based on gender. As a registered republican I had 8 years of embarrassment with a Presidential ego bigger than the moon, and then a candidate who showed a severe lack of intelligence by picking a inexperienced bimbo for a running mate. She couldn't even manage to hold her own in a preliminary vp debate. It's no wonder people don't show up to vote.

The unfortunate consequence of that VP selection in 2008 is that she never went away after the election was lost. Now, for some reason, she's been afforded way too much credibility by the right which makes it very tough for the Republicans to make any reasonable pitch to the electorate that they deserve to be back in the White House.

I must re-think my long-held opinion about Sarah Palin. From the minute I first heard her speak I was sure she was completely clueless. Nothing she has ever done or said since has made me doubt my first impression - it has only been strengthened. But now, Dick Cheney says she was a poor choice for VP. Maybe she isn't so bad after all.

The 2000 version of McCain was one of three Republicans for whom I, a Democrat, could have voted. McCain may not be a conservative automaton, but he surely could have played the conservative to Obama's liberal. If the wing nuts running the GOP had let McCain be McCain, the result might have been different. He may not have received my vote in 2008, but I could have lived with McCain and another Republican who doesn't take pride in his or her own ignorance.

Mitt talking war talk. Cheney looking for another way to make money off wars. Sure Cheney and Adelson encouraging Mitt to promise was on Iran with the Isrealis today. One of the major reasons I don't understand why anyone would vote for mItt. Mitt is in cohoots with some of the most dangerous people in our country. My vote is not for sale! Obama 2012 Vote congress out and let the President do his job! Agree with the Navy Seal that the president we have now is EXPERIENCED.
