Sununu: White House 'numb and dumb' on jobs report

(CNN) - As both sides of the aisle put political spin on Friday's job report, outspoken Mitt Romney surrogate John Sununu weighed in, calling the White House and advisers' comments on the report "numb and dumb."

"They're numb because they're insensitive to the 25 million people that are unemployed and underemployed. And they're dumb because they're deceptive," the Romney national campaign co-chairman said Friday on CNN's "The Situation Room."

Sununu, the former New Hampshire governor and chief of staff to former President George H.W. Bush, continued, "There were 162,000 jobs created primarily by the artifact of a seasonal adjustment. There were 175,000 fewer people working last month than the month before. These people - if (President Obama) wants to brag about 163,000 phantom new workers, the 152,000 who lost their job are not very happy to hear what Mr. Krueger and the president have to say about trying to spin this as good news."

July's jobs report showed an increase in hiring in the private sector but also an increase in the nation's unemployment rate, which a 10th of a percentage point from 8.2% to 8.3% from last month.

Earlier Friday, Alan Krueger, chairman of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, touted the 172,000 new jobs in the private sector, steering away from the rising unemployment numbers.

Obama followed suit, highlighting the private sector portion of the report in remarks in Washington.

"That means that we've now created 4.5 million new jobs over the last 29 months and 1.1 million new jobs so far this year," Obama said at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on Friday. "Those are our neighbors and family members finding work and the security that comes with work."

At a campaign event in Nevada - a state with unemployment numbers above the national average - presumptive GOP presidential nominee Romney said the report was a "hammer blow to struggling middle-class families."

"A lot of people are suffering in this country," Romney said. "I think it's an extraordinary failure of policy, a failure of leadership, and I think it's a moral failure for a country as successful and prosperous as our own to go now four years in a mode which feels to many people as a recession."

Sununu also defended the Republican candidate on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's allegations that an unnamed Bain Capital investor told him that Romney had not been paying taxes. Reid and fellow Democrats have been calling for Romney to release more of his tax returns, suggesting that the wealthy businessman may have something in his financial profile that he wants to hide.

Romney has made public the full 2010 tax return and an estimate for 2011, with a pledge to release the full year once it's complete. He filed an extension for an October deadline, refusing to release further tax documentation.

A loyal Romney aide, Sununu said the political conversation would veer away from distractions like Reid's comments as the public begins to pay more attention to the campaign - a shift that he says will happen about a week or two out from the Republican National Convention in late August.

Sununu is the one who is dumb and numb if he believes he and his republican conspirators can continue to deceive and lie to the American people. First of all he had to resign in disgrace from a position he held in government, His credibility is in question. Second, 4.5 millions jobs have been created during President Obama's administration in spite of the conspiracy by the republicans to make him a "one term president". Third, Sununu and his cohorts were dumb by announcing their main agenda was to see that President Obama fails, thereby wishing failure for America. The republicans have demonstrated their low down dirty deed of back-stabbing lthe American people. They are the greatest example of pathetic, greedy, hypocritical, lying, deceitful and hateful specimens of mankind. They rank up there with any terrorist group or enemies America has.

I think Sununu needs to look in the mirror for the definition of "dumb" and "has been". Really think people care about your opinion? Please! 3/4 of the people in this country don't know or care WHO you are!

Maybe Sununu can also explain the inaction and lack of work by the congress and senate in passing jobs bills?
Its a bit difficult to improve the jobs outlook when the new republican tea party members in particular are trying their best to make sure congress does nothing so they can then say the democrats havent accomplished anything??

During this time of economic upheaval, the politicians are more interested in playing politics and making sure Obama is a one-term president.
Despite Obamas faults, i think he would like to see the US situation improve, as would any American. Unfortunately, the politicians elected to their offices with nice cushy jobs and tax-payer funded benefits do not seem to have the best interests of their nation or its people in mind. Theyve all sold out to the highest bidders.

"they are dumb because they are deceptive". Huh? Those two words have completely different meanings and have nothing to do with each other. Who is dumb?

Sununu is part of an older group that did have its power. It's because of the way they handled their power, the world is in the mess it is now.

Why did this mean spirited jerk come crawling out from under his rock all of a sudden.? Must want a position if Romney wins. Sununu is a washed up, fossil. Shut up Sununu, you are irrelevant.!!!!

Even if there were 20 million jobs created next month, Sununu and Romney and republicans would be bashing Obama. If he healed every disease and walked on water, they'd still hate him. I wish we could elevate our political discussion in this country to one of value, not just the the greedy ego talking.

Yeah, because we all know that Democrats are "insensitive" to the needs of the working class while Republicans care so very much about them. Both parties exaggerate sometimes, both parties lie sometimes, but only Republicans engage in Big Lies.

Could somebody tell the twit to STFU!!! "A lot of people are suffering in this country," Romney said. Yes, you moron, it's thanks to you that many Americans don't have jobs or lost their pensions. Look in the mirror and see your ugly side.
Imagine that sununu, from NH no less, isn't that where the bully bishop lived for a while when running for governor of Massachusetts? Another loudmouth rich Cuban American from the right. Maybe he and the beefcake (bard) from Florida can swim back to Cuba!

Since Sununu is so sensitive and concern about the unemployment, please propose some jobs plans for the 25 million to help them to support themselves and their families. Romney gave another promise: to create 250,000 each month for straight 4 years, again refused to give any detail.
    Why don't they shut up?

The reason sunnunun has not been in poultice for the same ridiculous comment he makes today. He was racist then and he is racist now. You'll should do everybody a tabor and keep your pie hole shut.

Before Mr. Sununu goes off calling anyone "dumb", he should remember that (if my memory is correct) he had to resign in disgrace from the White House Staff because he was using, or I should say MIS-USING Planes, Helicopters, and the White House Travel Agency for his own personal use at Tax Payers Expense. This is the height of Hypocracy!!!!

This kind of blatant blah blah only helps the President's cause by negatively influencing swing voters in critical states. So thanks, Mr. Sanunu, for all you do!

The high unemployement is due to people like romney off-shoring jobs or the t-baggers budget cutting teachers, police and fireman jobs! FACT: under bush, the government expanded at the highest rate in U.S. history. Under Obama the government has decreased at the highest rate in U.S. history. With the right-wing tearing down the middle class, it is amazing the country is as stable as it is. Thanks to Obama's leadership against all odds and un-patriots!

Oh please. If misers like Romney didn't outsource our jobs to India and China we'd have full employment. And Romneys "jobs plan" is to raise taxes on the middle class. Good luck with that.

Sununu and that governor from NJ should join up as a team. There were these two characters from "Alice in Wonderland" whom they seem to personify. Of course they could just be "Dumb and Dumber."

Sununu is representative of today's GOP. Totally clueless and nothing to offer in the way of job creation or anything else. All the right wing clowns in Congress must be dumped in November.

Mr. Sununu left his White House job under a cloud. He was just one of many who had to leave a job during an administration. What he did was dumb so I guess he should know about dumb moves. Mr. Sununu is trying hard to be heard but unfortunately his words have been less than noble. His last pronouncement led to an apology on his part.

Perhaps the people of NH believe he is credible but his actions show that his words should be taken with a few grains of salt. Why is he on CNN?
