Trump will have 'memorable' role at GOP convention, aide says

(CNN) - Donald Trump is set to get a 'unique' gig at the Republican National Convention in late August, an aide to the real estate titan confirmed on Friday.

"Mr. Trump's role will occur at the Tampa Bay Times Forum (site of the convention), though the specifics of the role are not being released at this time. The role, like Mr. Trump, is unique and will be memorable for all those in attendance at the convention and those watching around the country. Stay tuned," Executive Vice President and Special Counsel Michael Cohen told CNN.

Late Friday morning on Twitter, Trump suggested he would be doing something other than delivering a speech at the event: "I was asked to speak at the RNC but said no, because I will be doing something much bigger–just watch!"

Trump, known as an outspoken critic of the Obama administration and a pusher of the so-called birther issue, is set to be recognized as the 2012 Statesman of the Year by the Sarasota, Florida, Republican Party one day before the GOP convention opens in Tampa later this month.

After flirting with his own presidential bid last year, Trump came out in support for Romney in February of this year. The chairman of the Republican National Committee, however, would not say whether Trump would get a special spot at the national party's major gathering.

"I don't know right now what he's going to do at the convention," Reince Priebus told CNN's John Berman on "Starting Point." "But I do know that he's important to us and that he's somebody that we appreciate, because he's telling us the truth as far as where we're at in this economy."

As for the 'birther' controversy–in which some argue President Barack Obama was not born in the United States–Priebus said he has long viewed the claims as a "distraction."

"I have been, from the very moment that I've been chairman of this party, very clear as for where I stand on that issue. It's just as much of a distraction as it is for people to ask for more and more tax returns," Priebus said, referring to demands by Obama's re-election campaign and some Republicans for Romney to release more tax documents.

The RNC committee has announced the names of several headliners this week for the upcoming convention, which include many Republican governors and other high-profile Republicans.

ABC News first reported news of Trump's role at the convention.

- CNN's Paul Steinhauser, John Berman, and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

ART - Alot of people here seem to be suffering from what I call Republican amnesia. They tend to forget that obama is the one who pulled us out of the depths of the abyss.
42 consecutive months of record unemployment ov 8%, $6 TRILLION added to the debt, $1.3-1.5 TRILLION yearly deficits with no end in sight.... THAT is " out of the depths of the abyss"???!!!

Obama has kept the country down so long that now even reaching the curb looks like climbing Mt. Everest.

@cindy... I don't know if you have been following the news lately but your beloved democrook party has been lying, cheating the taxpayers, and bullying people... setting a great example for our young people. Harry Reid lied on the floor of the Senate, by the way it's up to Reid to prove Romney didn't pay his taxes, but that's right only democrooks are innocent until proven guilty. Stephanie Cutter lied about not knowing anything about the Colorado guy oh and let's not forget that the First Amendment is only ok for the left but if someone has a different opionion they get bullied to shut their mouth. Sounds like hypocrisy to me.

Whose role will be more unique, between Trump and Newt. Seems like Romney campaign is going out of its way to please the nuts, so they don't get bolted by them. Just watch out for a speaking session by Palin babe.

Romney could make Harry Reid look foolish and win admiration from many voters if he released his tax returns and WASN'T shown to be a lying cheat. Don't you think he'd release them if he felt he could accomplish those things? Your poorly-structured rant appears to be a loose collection of Fox News sound bites. You either need to return to school or avoid mixing meth with Bud-Lite.

@Bend – "42 consecutive months of record unemployment ov 8%"
...and the lies just keep coming. 42 consecutive months is a record? Have you never heard of the Great Depression, which of course, was made much worse when Herbert Hoover did exactly what the Conservatives have been suggesting we do this time. Oh, and the $1.5T deficit for 2009 was the one GWB submitted to Congress. Under Obama the annual deficits have declined each year, dispite inheriting the worst economy in 75 years, the Bush tax cuts, two wars, and Medicare Part D. That is why our deficits are so high and the national debt is climbing. You dummies drove the car into the ditch.

@Bend – "42 consecutive months of record unemployment ov 8%"
42 consecutive months is a record?

In modern times yes it is Mikey. Yes, we know all too painfully that Obama's disastrous record of unemployment is only bested by another Democrat, FDR. For long term nightmares, the country can always thank the Democrats.

Mr. Trump's role may be unique but it may be difficult to understand why he will have this unique role. He has had his success building golden towers with his name on them. His forays into politics seem to be aimed at the presidency. He is just bold enough to throw his money around and to let everyone know that he is doing this. Mr. Romney should be cautious around him because he could turn on him at any time.

Wow, the Donald gets a role and not Palin, what is this world coming to? The republicans are very desperate and they keep Trump around to do their dirty work like keeping that birther crap alive so they won't have to take responsibility for it in any way. I can't stand Donald Trump is a bloated, overly spray tanned racist!

Is Romney going to be the VP? That is only big thing I can think of. Also, attention to him may dwarf Romney's message or lack of message.

Nice try, Priebus! You know what the difference is between the tax returns issue and the birther issue? The President has never hid from the birther attacks. As soon as they began, he responded by posting the short (and legally required) form of his birth certificate online.

When it was clear that panderers like HairWeave Trump would not stop blathering about the birth certificate, the President released the long form which he was under no legal obligation to do. Nevertheless, Trump continues to pander to racists on this distraction ,as you call it. It says something about your sincerity in calling this a distraction that you are, nonetheless giving this clown a prominent role at your convention.

Romney, on the other hand, has continually stonewalled on the tax return issue. If there is nothing to it, if he has nothing to hide, why won't he release his returns? He went back 24 years for John McCain. Do the American people deserve less? The only way to stop speculation like that by Senator Reid is to come clean.
