Trump will have 'memorable' role at GOP convention, aide says

(CNN) - Donald Trump is set to get a 'unique' gig at the Republican National Convention in late August, an aide to the real estate titan confirmed on Friday.

"Mr. Trump's role will occur at the Tampa Bay Times Forum (site of the convention), though the specifics of the role are not being released at this time. The role, like Mr. Trump, is unique and will be memorable for all those in attendance at the convention and those watching around the country. Stay tuned," Executive Vice President and Special Counsel Michael Cohen told CNN.

Late Friday morning on Twitter, Trump suggested he would be doing something other than delivering a speech at the event: "I was asked to speak at the RNC but said no, because I will be doing something much bigger–just watch!"

Trump, known as an outspoken critic of the Obama administration and a pusher of the so-called birther issue, is set to be recognized as the 2012 Statesman of the Year by the Sarasota, Florida, Republican Party one day before the GOP convention opens in Tampa later this month.

After flirting with his own presidential bid last year, Trump came out in support for Romney in February of this year. The chairman of the Republican National Committee, however, would not say whether Trump would get a special spot at the national party's major gathering.

"I don't know right now what he's going to do at the convention," Reince Priebus told CNN's John Berman on "Starting Point." "But I do know that he's important to us and that he's somebody that we appreciate, because he's telling us the truth as far as where we're at in this economy."

As for the 'birther' controversy–in which some argue President Barack Obama was not born in the United States–Priebus said he has long viewed the claims as a "distraction."

"I have been, from the very moment that I've been chairman of this party, very clear as for where I stand on that issue. It's just as much of a distraction as it is for people to ask for more and more tax returns," Priebus said, referring to demands by Obama's re-election campaign and some Republicans for Romney to release more tax documents.

The RNC committee has announced the names of several headliners this week for the upcoming convention, which include many Republican governors and other high-profile Republicans.

ABC News first reported news of Trump's role at the convention.

- CNN's Paul Steinhauser, John Berman, and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

GOP is no longer the party of Lincoln. it has been taken over by right wing extremists called the Tea Party and it does not bode well for the American people. What you are seeing is a spineless GOP party who has rolled over and allowed these right wing loonies to use them as a doormat wiping their boots all over them. GOP surrendered with not so much as a whimper. Lincoln,Teddy Roosevelt,Eisenhower and Reagan must be rolling over in their graves..

Trump will arrive on stage sliding down a wire over the audience hand in hand with Ted Nugent. Upon arriving on stage, Dick Cheney will shoot him in the face with a shotgun, only hitting the top of his head and he escapes nearly unscathed. Cheney, says that he was aiming at the ferret sitting on top of Trumps head and was protecting the statesman of the year from being mortally wounded. Thereby showing solidarity for guns, hunting, worship of money, a lack of compassion for any living creature who does not add value to the GOP, the Koch Brothers, and "those who do not side with anything approximating environmentalism". Man...I would pay to see that. Can we put it on Pay Per View?

Trump will be the guest of honor in the GOP's Dunk Tank. For a $5 donation to the RNC, you get three chances to dunk the Donald.

"let me guess. They will have a version of The Apprentice with spliced in footage of Obama talking about what he has done for the economy. Making him look incompetent of course. At the end Trump will say Your Fired."
Well, that WOULD be a reality show.

I really suspect that Willard doesn't want "You People" to know that he really is worth – probably a BILLION dollars – so won't put out more tax papers. When he was running for governor (his only public office, by the way), he wanted his female opponent to put out HER tax papers, and she and the other candidates did, but he didn't! He mentioned Ted Kennedy had not put out any tax papers YEARS EARLIER, when running for senator so he wasn't going to either (Willard lost that race). Not only that, when the female opponent put out her tax papers, Willard asked WHERE ARE HER HUSBAND'S tax papers! This guy is incredible! I hope when President Obama wins again, the Justice Department investigates this guy on everything...I really feel he is a shady character and has gotten away with shenanigans for 30+ years.

Having any association with this idiot shows extrememly bad judgement, so why in the world would the republicans give him any sort of "role" in their convention. There is just such a creep factor associated with him.

Makes sense. Don and Willard are two characters that have no chance of being President and are both too chicken to release their tax returns.
But Don can wax poetic about the early primary season when he was the lead clown in the GOP circus, then it was Bachmann, then Perry, then Herb Cain, then Santorum, and they finally ended up with the clown that sports over-sized flip-flops instead of shoes. Debates will be so much fun this year if Willard gets out of Tampa unscathed.

Maybe his "memorable" role will be to say "You're fired!" to Romney as the right wing looks for a more reliable replacement puppet.

Let me see if I get this right, Mitt Romney says he's more qualified and better equipped to fix the economy because he's an experienced and successful businessman and entrepreneur with the know how to fix the economy, yet he hasn't selected successful businessman and entrepreneur Donald Trump as his running mate? So how come? I sense hypocrisy here!

Mitt Romney said as President, he would create 12 million jobs by end of his first term. Well Mitt, if your were elected President and were able to do so, it would only be so simply because the bleeding has already stop and the recession is just about over with our economy on the rebund. O' and plus you won't have to deal with two foreign wars and a divided congress who's objective is to see you and America fail. Obama/Biden/Roberts 2012!

The fact that Chump has any role at all shows how low ball the GOP has become. The guy has declared bankruptcy 3 times and yet people on the right think he has something positive to add to the economic debate. The only thing Chump is correct on is China. However, since he will never be a prominent rep of the United States, he should just go back to his cheesey gold palace and work on his comb over.

  20. hate from the left but mostly lies

Why is Trump going to the convention? This birther idiot has made a fool of the republican party and ran for president as a publicity stunt. Birthers are not the large majority of republicans and most republicans think that Obama is not an american (though his politics definatly are not). Why can't this idiot go away?

or maybe a lecture on how to file for bankruptcy 4 times and reduce corporate debt by transferring it to the actual tax payers, to be followed by a lecture from Mitt on how to squirrel away billions in over seas accounts to dodge US taxes and how to grow your 401k to millions of dollars regardless of the $30,000/year limit....
