Trump will have 'memorable' role at GOP convention, aide says

(CNN) - Donald Trump is set to get a 'unique' gig at the Republican National Convention in late August, an aide to the real estate titan confirmed on Friday.

"Mr. Trump's role will occur at the Tampa Bay Times Forum (site of the convention), though the specifics of the role are not being released at this time. The role, like Mr. Trump, is unique and will be memorable for all those in attendance at the convention and those watching around the country. Stay tuned," Executive Vice President and Special Counsel Michael Cohen told CNN.

Late Friday morning on Twitter, Trump suggested he would be doing something other than delivering a speech at the event: "I was asked to speak at the RNC but said no, because I will be doing something much bigger–just watch!"

Trump, known as an outspoken critic of the Obama administration and a pusher of the so-called birther issue, is set to be recognized as the 2012 Statesman of the Year by the Sarasota, Florida, Republican Party one day before the GOP convention opens in Tampa later this month.

After flirting with his own presidential bid last year, Trump came out in support for Romney in February of this year. The chairman of the Republican National Committee, however, would not say whether Trump would get a special spot at the national party's major gathering.

"I don't know right now what he's going to do at the convention," Reince Priebus told CNN's John Berman on "Starting Point." "But I do know that he's important to us and that he's somebody that we appreciate, because he's telling us the truth as far as where we're at in this economy."

As for the 'birther' controversy–in which some argue President Barack Obama was not born in the United States–Priebus said he has long viewed the claims as a "distraction."

"I have been, from the very moment that I've been chairman of this party, very clear as for where I stand on that issue. It's just as much of a distraction as it is for people to ask for more and more tax returns," Priebus said, referring to demands by Obama's re-election campaign and some Republicans for Romney to release more tax documents.

The RNC committee has announced the names of several headliners this week for the upcoming convention, which include many Republican governors and other high-profile Republicans.

ABC News first reported news of Trump's role at the convention.

- CNN's Paul Steinhauser, John Berman, and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

I was asked to speak (at the Republican convention) but said 'no'." THAT'S GOT TO BE ANOTHER LIE!

I can't imagine that the Republican establishment even wants him in the state of Florida during their celebration of lies and deciet. But look's like they're going to get him and get what they deserve from his presence – a 5% drop in Romney's polling numbers. Wonderful!

Reince Priebus says Donald Tacky tells the truth? I'm not sure whether that's hilarious or tragic. (I'm still waiting to hear what his imaginary investigators found out about Obama in Hawaii, by the way.)

Donald Tacky is nothing more than a clown, with an orange face and an ugly wig to match, and it says a lot about how low the GOP has fallen that they'd consider including him in any role. Who's next - Snooki? I hear she's a Republican too.

  9. President 'STILL' American!

What happened to Trumps promises of 'NEW FOUND FACTS'! ........' MY PEOPLES HAVE UNCOVERED STUNNING EVIDENCE'...... 'JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE WHAT PROOF WE HAVE'.!!! horribly embarrassing for America. HE is a perfect example of what is wrong with the Country. Glad he is going to the convention though....hope he makes an even bigger fool of himself.

I can see it now. They will do a spook of the Apprentice and Trump will come out and say "Barak Obama, you're fired!" and the crowd will go wild, further demeaning the political process. This is shaping up to be a reality show on the lines of Toddlers and Tiaras.

I was wondering what could the Donald do to make it a memorable republican convention. He definitely wont be giving Romney pointers on how to fire people since Romney probably has fired more people than the Donald. He could announce that the next round of celebrity apprentice that airs in December will include Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, John McCain, Jan Brewer, and Michele Bachmann and the first task for each of them will be to arm wrestle Rosie O'Donnell. That probably is what is going to happen.

The republican convention will be as boring as it was in 2008. Robmey needs all the help he can get and by the looks of things adding this fool to the convention is defenitly a mistake! Donald Trump is a sure loser for Robmey

Something much bigger than a speech? Al I can think of is that he will float from the ceiling in a giant toupe' singing," We're in the money" if Mitt the Twit wins.

The Republican Convention is becoming a clown and freak show.

Neither of this guy's parents were born in the United States, yet he's wants to question the authenticity of the birth certificate of our President who was born in the United States. Trump must be a teapublican.

Yeah.. this sure is a mystery.. nobody would guess that they're going to run a mock-apprentice skit where Donald Trump tells Obama "you're fired".. it's so clever you'd better keep it under wraps!

I'll give you a zillion dollars if Donald Trump doesn't utter the words "Fired!"
I hope Obama invites SNL, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert to be counterweights as similarly seriously circus acts.
