(CNN) – Candy Crowley, CNN's chief political correspondent and host of "State of the Union," will be the first woman in 20 years to moderate a general election presidential debate, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday.
Crowley will host the second debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney on October 16 in Hempstead, New York, at Hoftsra University.
The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was Carole Simpson in 1992. Barbara Walters also hosted two presidential debates, in 1976 and 1984.
In July Crowley moderated a U.S. Senate debate in Virginia between former Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine. She also moderated a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Florida ahead of the 2010 election.
Other debate moderators announced Monday included PBS' Jim Lehrer, who will host the October 3 debate in Denver, and CBS' Bob Schieffer, who will host an October 22 debate in Boca Raton, Florida.
Martha Raddatz of ABC will host the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan on October 11 in Danville, Kentucky.
"State of the Union" airs Sundays on CNN at 9 a.m. ET and noon.

candy is fare person, but in my opionion i thinks she have more repubs spewing their crap on her shows, and she ask them more softball questions than she does the democrats on the show. but i do watches her show every chance i get.
I have always admired Ms. Crowley. She is smart and does a terrific job reporting on politics. And she leaves out the spin and sticks to the facts. Congrats to you Candy!
I would have preferred to see Gloria Borger. Candy's voice is annoying and she tends to ask softball questions.
Yuck! Why didn't they just get Ann Coulter or Megyn what's her face from FukNews? Crowley is fat and in the tank for the Tea people. I. Can't. Stand. Her. Rachael Maddow or Mika Brezenski or Gwin Ifill or Christine Ammanpour. Now those women are real journalists. Crowley. She is just, well, fat and a really lazy interviewer. Yuck!
she will give the HOOD a pass every chance she will have, she is so bias and affraid to counter the negativism of the QUERULOUS one-willard
Candi Crowley is an excellent choice for the Debate. She is honest and very direct.
hmm..the one who declared the Rep ticket as death wish. I am sure the debate will moderated with fairness (snicker!) Ms Crowley, try to contain your enthusiastic support for Obama during the event, it is a bad from for a moderator to show her bias on the national TV!
lousy choice.......will favor the HOOD.
Congrats Candy. You're a fine journalist and keep your cool under fire. The very best of luck. I can't believe it's been this long since Carole Simpson moderated.
fixed questions is not debate.the answers are all ready in weeks before the debate
Its about time. Candy is an excellent moderator, and an experienced professional.
I trust Crowley. Good for her.
Congratulations!
Is this the best you can do CNN, she is a panderer to the right wing! Her question are open ended to manipulaion and distortion, doesnn't challenge with facts, nor stand her ground on facts with repuglicans, weak easily intimidated by repuglicans, no backbone, appeases rightwing talking points, no indepth insight on political policy and how it may effect everyday Americans, and will not stand on the side of the 99 percent, unemployed, seniors, minorities, students, poor, or middle class when questioning repuglicans! I am disappointed!
I only hope she can be professional about her position in the debate. She will need to be quite objective and think of the country first, before she considers her favorite.
Judy
I certainly hope this debate is actually about the issues like unemployment and reducing the debt and not about what name you called someone in second grade.
i I don't believe she is qualified and is one of the most partisan manipulative opionators on TV. UGH. Agree with the other two but not Jihad Candy...
Hopefully Candy will be able to use this to vault to her own show on Fox foreign owned media.
Wolf Blitzer is even worse than Candy!
I guess Gwen Ifill moderating the VP debates doesn't count.
Great! I like Candy. She's smart, measured and does't seem to be trying to prove anything.
I never miss state of the union, I liked the way she covered 2008 primary. I bet questions will be fair and Balance
Right choice
Best of luck
I hope she asks tough questions and doesn't allow them to side-step or ignore the answers. Keep them on the subject and don't accept B.S. for a response.
Congratulations, Candy!
I am hoping for substantive debates that deal with real, forward-looking issues rather than silly nonsense issues that President's have no control over.
What about Gary Johnson?
