(CNN) – Candy Crowley, CNN's chief political correspondent and host of "State of the Union," will be the first woman in 20 years to moderate a general election presidential debate, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday.
Crowley will host the second debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney on October 16 in Hempstead, New York, at Hoftsra University.
The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was Carole Simpson in 1992. Barbara Walters also hosted two presidential debates, in 1976 and 1984.
In July Crowley moderated a U.S. Senate debate in Virginia between former Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine. She also moderated a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Florida ahead of the 2010 election.
Other debate moderators announced Monday included PBS' Jim Lehrer, who will host the October 3 debate in Denver, and CBS' Bob Schieffer, who will host an October 22 debate in Boca Raton, Florida.
Martha Raddatz of ABC will host the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan on October 11 in Danville, Kentucky.
"State of the Union" airs Sundays on CNN at 9 a.m. ET and noon.

I would think that she may be better suited to moderate some pig races !!!!! Certainly an Obama worshiper, but Romney will tear them both up !!!

Really, Candy Crowley as a moderator. How can she claim to moderate a quality and unbiased debate? Just last Sunday, she cited an used unnamed sources to say that some repulbicans see the Ryan pick as "some sort of deathwish." Does anyone really believe that? Another made up story by a made up reporter.
She will and should be under the microscope. If she strays, Romeny should cal lher out during the debate.
I am one guy who leans a little more right than left who likes this Gal. I think she's the least bias of all on CNN. I am looking forward to a telling debate. It won't change my mind. I could no more vote for socialism(Obama) than I could crap cream cheese and bagels, but I will be watching and hoping the conservative doesn't fall on his face.Sort of like watching your favorite ice skater during the olympics. Here's to Romney landing that quadruple axel.
Ms. Crowley is a well known progressive not someone who can moderate a presidential debate of the importance of this one.

Congratulations to Candy! She will be a superb moderator–a million times better than Blitzer and King!
It will be a first if a CNN staff member is able to remain neutral.
here's a couple of questions to ask Candy...1) "how about stopping the free '"for life benefits' given to former Senators/Congressmen/women. Wouldn't that save a lot of $$ if it is stopped? 2) Stop all the free travel, food and other perks they all get". 3) Like the rest of us citizen, save for your retirement. 4) Live off of SS & Medicare like the rest of us. Hope you have the courage to ask these questions Candy!!! And please make sure they answer them...not beat around the bush and not answer. Keep pressing them for an answer...none of this 'I'll get back to ya on that'. 4) There are so many other ways to cut the deficit without touching SS or Medicare. 5) No more free rides for the Senators/congresspeople. Live like the rest of us, you were elected to serve the people.
Every debate moderator this year an obvious lefty, as usual, including the ever yuck-o fat Candy. What a rigged bore.
So far the vast majority of the coverage on CNN concerning Ryan is very partisan. I can well imagine how she will moderate this debate.
Does Biden even exist anymore?
Can she do it in an unbaised fashion CNN??? Or will she attack Romney/Ryan and toss softballs to Obama/Biden??? Will she pretend that Obama hasn't been President for the last four years? We'll see.
Candy Crowley to moderate the presidential debate. Given her comments I am sure it will be an fair unbiased hosting of the debate,no, she is too biased to even consider being fair...........
oh, this is going to be good.
not turned on?
Now the question is, will she ask some real question of Barack Obama or just more softball practice ?
Good for her. She is very knowledgeable on a lot of issues BUT while interviewing she doesn't make a follow up of the question until getting the anticipated answer as John King and Wolf Blitzer do. She tends to accepts the answers so quickly. I hope she can rectify this.
Congratulations, Candy. You deserve it.
Well we all know that this will be a one-sided debate because of Crowley and CNN's favoring of Obama. Watch you will see that Romney will get the hard questions and Obama will get "so how are Michelle and the girls doing" type of questions. From listening to Crowley I know she completely supports Obama so where is the fairness in this choice of moderator. As far as I am concerned this is not a fair choice of person to be moderator and for sure we will see the liberal bias all the way against Romney. Poor choice of moderator!!!!!!!!!!
I am so proud of Candy!! She has been a favorite of mine on CNN for a long time. She's always so level headed!!
This annoucement serves as the only expalanation as to why CNN pulled the extremely biased reaction by Cowley to the Ryan VP announcement. It's not a question.
She will keep everyone in their place. No holds barred for Candy, love you!
Hooray for Candy- finally breaking through that glass ceiling - you go girl ;-)i
The debate will last more than an hour. Are they sure Candy can go that long without eating?
she'll ask them first: do you pledge your unconditional support for my country, Israel?
