CNN's Crowley to be first woman in two decades to moderate presidential debate

(CNN) – Candy Crowley, CNN's chief political correspondent and host of "State of the Union," will be the first woman in 20 years to moderate a general election presidential debate, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday.

Crowley will host the second debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney on October 16 in Hempstead, New York, at Hoftsra University.

The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was Carole Simpson in 1992. Barbara Walters also hosted two presidential debates, in 1976 and 1984.

In July Crowley moderated a U.S. Senate debate in Virginia between former Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine. She also moderated a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Florida ahead of the 2010 election.

Other debate moderators announced Monday included PBS' Jim Lehrer, who will host the October 3 debate in Denver, and CBS' Bob Schieffer, who will host an October 22 debate in Boca Raton, Florida.

Martha Raddatz of ABC will host the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan on October 11 in Danville, Kentucky.

"State of the Union" airs Sundays on CNN at 9 a.m. ET and noon.

    Dear Ms. Crowley,

Please ask MIttens what gender Bain Capital is because, after all, "corporations are people, my friend."

    Sincerely,
    An American Voter

She's already proven why Americans consider her to be a pro-Obama lapdog and why CNN is DEAD LAST in the ratings. Enjoy bankruptcy CNN!

You must stop calling these "debates". In an ACTUAL debate, the parties address each other, and can reply to directly. That is not the case in your system. The candidates merely read prepared speeches in the presence of each other. That is NOT a debate!!!

Does the USA have no idea what the word "debate" means?

Wonder how fair your debate moderating will be.... Right out of the gate you couldn't wait to make your infamous
negative statement concerning the Paul Ryan pick for VP candidate.

Please add that the VP debate will be at Centre College in Danville, Ky. You identified Hofstra Univ for the Presidential Debate, but left out Centre College.

I think it's great but she is often obviously idealogue Republican biased. IF she can ask Republicans hard ball questions including questions ragrding a womans rights and push for answers instead of allowing candidates to dodge the question I think it's great ! better than Palin or Bachman for sure!

Although, in a lot of its coverage, CNN seems have pulled rather to the left recently, Candy Crowley has always had my highest admiration and respect for her incisive questions and balanced objectivity. She's one of the few analysts whom you would be hard put to say whether she votes Republcian or Democrat. Really, I am so happy for her, and for the way the debate will be handled. (Though, if memory serves me, which it may not, didn't Qwen Iffel moderate a Presidential debate several years back?)

Clearly CNN gave up objectivity a long time ago. What business school did the CNN finance folks go to? 90% of the country are not liberals, last time I checked.

She is part of the problem. She has no dept, very boring with no real core in getting at the real truth. Another puppet working for the establishment. Duck Tape ready self inflicting waste.

For what its worth, Crowley is more even handed than most cable 'news reporters/analysts'. Just hope she has good questions and more importantly can get true answers out of President Obama and Romney

BE HAPPY! STAY HAPPY! Don't watch any debates. Just vote however you plan to in November. Read a good book, watch a movie you haven't seen in a long time, spend time with family and friends. You won't learn anything from the debates that you don't already know. You might watch a lot of scrappin and fightin. You already know who you're voting for.

When will Jon Stewart moderate a debate? At least that guy will pound both parties candidates.

Bring Gary Johnson into the debate and then I will watch. A vote for either Romney or Obama will result it the same – Politicians attempting to keep their power. Vote for Liberty not statism.
