(CNN) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was rumored to be a potential V.P. pick for Mitt Romney, gave new details Monday on the moment he learned his name would not appear on the ballot as Romney's running mate.
At a press conference in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Christie said Romney e-mailed him on Aug. 10, the night before the presumptive GOP nominee announced Rep. Paul Ryan as his pick.

In the e-mail, Romney asked if he could speak with Christie. The Republican governor, however, was in the air at the time returning from a Montana fundraiser and called Romney when he landed.
Romney, he said, asked Christie to be the keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention but said he had gone another direction in his running mate choice.
Christie said Monday he was not disappointed by the decision. "I told everyone all along I didn't want to be V.P."
He added: "I never really thought I was going to be asked, and I was right."
Christie became a major surrogate for Romney after he endorsed the former Massachusetts governor in October last year.
The New Jersey Republican first responded to the selection of Ryan the same day the House Budget Committee chairman was picked.
"With Paul Ryan on the ticket this is a team that understands the economic stagnation our country has been facing the last four years and the urgency with which we need to change course. The Romney-Ryan team is uniquely positioned to make the tough choices necessary to confront our fiscal challenges and get results," Christie said in a statement on Aug. 11.
- CNN Senior Producer Rose Arce contributed to this report.
Christie understands the working man's plight. Especially the poor and the hungry. He looks like he understands the hungry, doesn't he?
Christie says 'I was right' about Romney's VP pick...

Me too, Bro. I knew Mitt Romney wanted more than just a candidate for the campaign. He needed a candidate that would complete one of the best teams to ever run for that office in order to meet one of the most critical times in the nation's history. Critical because we need to change the direction away from reckless politics to responsible planning and management. Political choices like those we have seen since 2009 have made the most ineffective American Federal Government in history. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are an immensely talented and experienced team, each with a record of success and accomplishment that stands up well to the challenges they will inherit in January.
What the heck is this?
If I read this correctly, these comments were made on the 10th and 11th? What is the point of posting them now? And better yet, why would anyone care?
I am going to stay away from obese jokes about this waddler. He probably would have been a better choice because every time somebody in the teapublikkklan party opens his or her mouth the dirt continues to pile up on the rethug ticket.
That being said, the flip flopper doesn't want to talk about bain and his business experience; he (and his wife) have already said that they are not showing us any more of their taxes (I guess we can only imagine what he didn't pay and how much he made when a dancing horse can be used as a $77,000 deduction); he is a bully; they abused their dog; he likes to dress up as a police officer but he and his sons won't serve in the Army; and now the boy toy's stand on abortion is front and center since he thinks like akin and has voted against abortions for women who have been raped.
LOL. Must be a really terrible feeling to know that you lost the bid to Paul Ryan!? Ryan is the nail in Romney Hood's coffin......and Willard passed on you?!? Ouch!
Who would want a fat man on their ticket when Health Care is debated!!
Never were considered and didn't want to be considered, but you still let the search team scour through all your tax records and personal files? Sure, I believe that.
Bully Christie smiling through his tears.
Christie better re-think his support of Ryan on the Ticket. This guys is going to get tied to Todd Akins who made the stupid remark about Rape. Romney already has low approval rateings. With Ryan on Romneys V.P. pick ? They are never going to see the White House any time soon.
Christie,go back to what you do best, shoving food in your mouth but if you get a chance ask Mitt wheres his tax returns?
I was at Brookings for that talk. It was a great speech...
Did Christie explain why Americans should trust a candidate who hides something illegsl on his taxes? Do we want somebody who is facing trial due to illigal tax fraud? Is a criminal a good person to trust with our future? Is it true one of his sons and his wife are also facing charges? Is the Mormon Church involved?
This is how these things get going... He could make everybody look foolish by showing his returns like all other candidates but still chooses to act like a criminal. Maybe it's because he's been caught and wants to get elected before the trial. Will he get impeached for committing a felony? Will the Church get dragged through the mud too?
The purpose of anyone hiding money in the Cayman Island, Swiss bank accounts, etc. is to avoid paying their fair taxes to the U.S. I don't understand how any tax paying American can support someone who wants to be President that hides his money in another country. And maybe Romney didn't pay taxes because he's exempt because he's a Bishop of his Mormon Church.
"never though ...be asked..." Wow... This guy must be clairvoyant!! When did he come to this startling conclusion? Nobody else in America ever thought you be asked either, Chris!!
Only the people in New Jersey believe anything you say.
Yep, yep, yep. He shore was right about that one there. Maybe one of dees days he's brains will recognize he's belly full.
fat disgusting bully
christie between bites said he was right ryan will be the down fall of the ticket. Hard to decide who is the better lier him or mittens. But mitt has been at it a lot longer. Maybe they should just go take a dip in the sea while romney figures what new story he will tell us about his taxes.Oh yeah we all keep our money off shore. Everyone of their ads is so full of lies hard to tell which one to start with. Forward. Womens groups are getting a good look at these repo clowns.
Ahhh, he really is disappointed, he sounds like the kid who nobody wanted to play with, ironic.
Lemme guess. He actually placed bets in Atlantic City on Ryan, Rubio, Daniels and Jindal. Ryan probably had the lowest payoff, but this way he can still claim to be a winner.
Christie is not stupid. The losing Veep candidate is usually washed-up in politics, and he didn't want to tank his career just yet.
►Christie says 'I was right' about Romney's VP pick◄
So what do you want Christie – A peppermint stick?
Picking Ryan is not what most think is a winning choice
Especially since he does NOT think like me or represent my voice!!
Christie, go pick your nose – you'll get a winner there!!!
Obama 2012 – The Only Trusted Way Forward!!
Oh yes my little chick-a-dee!
A man as large, literally & figuratively speaking, as Christy is, has a lot of political baggage.
