(CNN) - Earlier this week, CNN obtained portions of the Republican Party's 2012 platform, which included language about the GOP's position on abortion.
The language will not be official until it's ratified by convention delegates next week, but it's unlikely to undergo any changes before then.
Because the abortion plank has become a source of controversy and debate in the presidential race this week, we've posted the full language here for those interested in reading the entire passage.
THE SANCTITY AND DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFEFaithful to the "self-evident" truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life. We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide.Republican leadership has led the effort to prohibit the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion, permitted States to extend health care coverage to children before birth. We urge Congress to strengthen the Born Alive Infant Protection Act by exacting appropriate civil and criminal penalties to health care providers who fail to provide treatment and care to an infant who survives and abortion, including early induction delivery where the death of the infant is intended. We call for legislation to ban sex-selective abortions - gender discrimination in its most lethal form - and to protect from abortion unborn children who are capable of feeling pain; and we applaud U.S. House Republicans for leading the effort to protect the lives of pain-capable unborn children in the District of Columbia. We call for a revision of federal law 42 U.S.C. 289.92 to bar the use of body parts from aborted fetuses for research. We support and applaud adult stem cell research to develop lifesaving therapies, and we oppose the killing of embryos for their stem cells. We oppose federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
We also salute the many states that have passed laws for informed consent, mandatory waiting periods prior to an abortion, and health protective clinic regulation. We seek to protect young girls from exploitation through a parental consent requirement; and we affirm our moral obligation to assist, rather than penalize, women challenged by an unplanned pregnancy. We salute those who provide them with counseling and adoption alternatives and empower them to choose live, and we take comfort in the tremendous increase in adoptions that has followed Republican legislative initiatives.
Excellent! My vote hangs on this. Otherwise, the candidates will only get my prayers. Thank you.
These people are wasting their time.
These people are just pro-birth because they support the death penalty. The idea that they are so hard on criminals can be just laughable as well. This just shows that they can't understand what the needs of people are.
Thank you thank you. there is hope for the AMERICA i legally imigrated to.
They're not pro-life. You know what they are? They're anti-woman.
Simple as it gets, anti-woman. They don't like them. They don't like
women. They believe a woman's primary role is to function as a brood
mare for the state.
These Republicans are exceptional liars. Ryan sponsored any number of
bills in the House limiting abortion even if the life of the mother was
sacrificed, re-defining rape along with Akins, and the federal
personhood bill. These Republicans are throw-backs to the Dark Ages, and
do not belong in any public office. They try to bring it all back to
the economy, but what these cretins don't understand is that women's
health is an economic issue for them and their families. This all out
assault on women and their health choices needs to stop now
"And both Romney and Ryan backed proposals to outlaw abortion ... even in cases of rape and incest
Dr. Jack C. Willke, a physician whom abortion-rights opponents often
reference when making the claim that pregnancies from rape are uncommon,
served as a surrogate for Romney in his bid for the party's 2008
nomination
I guess then that the company Bain dealt with that handled waste/aborted babies is off basis for media questions too.
What is legitimate rape? Do you imply that statutory rape is not legitimate rape? The age of consent "18" has meaning.
Translation, "We, who have no medical or psychological training, know better what you women need than you and your doctors do! Therefore, quit your whining and lay back and enjoy it! Oh, and after the brat is born, don't come looking to us for any help. You got pregnant – you deal with it!"
Who says the Republicans haven't declared war on women?
I think an ad itemizing how many votes that the Tea Party House took on the same issues, again and again, once they got in power would be enlightening for most Americans. They also took quite a few meaningless votes on issues like light bulbs and "In God We Trust". These meaningless votes did nothing towards creating jobs or reducing the deficit.
