Ryan: Obama needs to 'show us' a budget plan

Fayetteville, North Carolina (CNN) - During a visit to the Fort Bragg area Thursday, vice presidential hopeful Rep. Paul Ryan said President Barack Obama needs to come up with a budget agreement or else North Carolina's defense industry and one of the nation's largest military populations will be threatened.

The House Budget Committee chairman – along with other Republicans – voted for the original debt ceiling deal that led to the current stalemate. The policy came about after a congressional "super committee" failed to reach a deficit-reduction plan last year. Months earlier, Congress had voted to implement the cuts if the super committee didn't ultimately find an agreement.

"And so the House has already passed, as well as the Senate, which has now been finally signed into law, bipartisan legislation saying put up or shut up. The president needs to show us how he plans on putting this in place, if he is not going to help us pass legislation preventing it in the first place, so we're now waiting for that answer," Ryan said.

Mitt Romney's running mate accused Obama of putting politics before the nation's military.

"It's our duty to preserve this legacy to support our voluntary force of men and women who volunteer to serve our nation and not let them be pawns in a political game because this is messing with jobs and lives," he said.

"[W]hatever happens between now and November, will happen between now and November," said Ryan. "But what Mitt Romney is committed to doing is making sure this doesn't take place, and that means if we have to do it in January, we will do it in January."

Ryan said he will try to "fix it retroactively" between November and January. "Now we believe that we have a procedural way in the Senate to advance that legislation very quickly and get it to the next president of the United States who I believe is going to be Mitt Romney, to pass that into law, and retroactively prevent that sequester from taking place in January."

If Republicans and Democrats fail to come to a budget agreement by the end of the year, significant cuts to the Department of Defense could become a reality. Beginning in 2013, the federal government would undergo a series of budget reductions to defense and non-defense programs that would total $1.2 trillion in cuts over the next decade.

It was during a roundtable discussion at a small defense contracting company in Fayetteville where Ryan said the looming defense cuts could cost 55,000 jobs in North Carolina.

"The president's demanding a massive tax increase on small businesses which will cost us jobs in exchange for these defense sequesters. We don't want to trade small business jobs for military jobs. We want more jobs across the board," Ryan said.

Speaking to about 100 people associated with the military or defense industries, the seven-term congressman from Wisconsin held up a card that was in the pocket of his blazer and shared something he hasn't talked about since he became Romney's running mate on August 11.

"I carry this card in my pocket. I've carried it with me for years. I don't really talk about this often," he said. "It's the men and women who have lost their lives, the men who have lost their lives in Wisconsin. I've talked to these families, been at the funerals. It's the ultimate sacrifice."

Mitty needs to show America his tax plan (true copies of his income tax). Ryan needs to chill out, he looks and sounds idiotic. VP Biden is gonna chew him up and spit him out during their head to head debate.

Congress makes budgets. The President signs or vetoes them. If he vetoes them, congress can override him. Congress needs to come up with a budget they can agree enough on to send to the President's desk.

Obama presented his budget plan and how he would reduce the debt to the so-called "super committee", which could not come to an agreement because the Republicans refused to compromise on revenues. Ryan has selective amnesia.

All I know is that four more years of Obama and his goal of Socialism for The United States will ruin our country as we know it. The deficit under this administration has become a debt that our great grandchildren and their children will never pay off. I served in both the Marines and the Army and this nonsense is breaking my heart.

These GOP led congressmen took us to the brink of default and then agreed to this deal and now they have cold feet. Will they ever have the courage to govern? They walked away from the presidents big deal, will they ever have the courage to govern? They are great at name calling but lack the guts to govern.

Looks like Ryan's plan to reduce government is from everything under the sun except his rich military contractor buddies. Give seniors a voucher but keep building those billion dollar planes that never get off the ground. Yep the Repugs are for smaller government.

BTW how long have you been on welfare because when we get the presidency and the senate back in November you will actually have to go to work instead of being a leach... That being said where are all the jobs obomba? There are none because you and your policies are a complete failure...

So, why did the Ryan's budget committee pass that plan to make these cuts in the first place? Why did the republican leader in the Senate proposed and pushed this plan in the first place? It is hypocratic of Ryan and other republicans to blame OBama for their own actions and thoughts. And after doing this, now they want Obama to develop and implement a plan to go against the approved policy about budget cuts by the senate and the house. And he Obama would have done that, they would say that he does not listen to the Congress. This is clearly another illustration of Ryan/Romeny and their republican friends' double standards. We cannot allow these to continue and hence must vote for Obam and all the democratic candidates in Novmeber elections.

Republicans kill me with this, "We need to cut the deficit and spending.............", but hold on, that doesn't apply to defense spending. And yes Democrats do it to with their programs, so please stop pretending that either side will fix anything because they won't. Both sides won't let you touch their special interest programs so they blame each other on not getting anything accomplished and say, "look, if they would cut this then we will be okay."

So is he implying that the Ryan budget plan will feed the military industrial complex that a Republican president warned against while cutting medicare and social security?

Mr Ryan .. you say you want to get things done, to move our country forward with more jobs. Then tell me why you and the rest of the Republicans, except for Olympia Snow, and a couple of other women on the Republican side, ALWAYS, and EVERY TIME, vote no on every Bill being voted on .. on every plan and Bill our president puts forward. Tell me!

No, Mitt and Paul, it was GOP obstructionism that resulted in the lack of a superagreement. Now, it's time for Congress to get it together. Paul, that means you and your GOP colleagues, to seek common ground with sequestration. The Defense Department is not a workforce program, so don't feature that nonsense. We need to defend America, but at what cost due to fraud, waste, and absue. Address those first.

The Ryan plan is nothing more than the "Starve the Beast" plan they have been pushing for years. They cannot get Grandma to give up her social security and medicare, so they are going to trick her. "Starving the beast" is a political strategy employed by American conservatives in order to limit government spending by cutting taxes in order to deprive the government of revenue in a deliberate effort to force the federal government to reduce spending. The short and medium term effect of the strategy has increased United States public debt rather than reduced spending.
The term "the beast" in this context refers to the American government and the programs it funds, particularly social programs such as welfare, Social Security, Medicare and public schools; and does not usually refer to spending on military, law enforcement or prisons. SOUND FAMILIAR!

Little Paul, your plan is to attack and destroy most of the social programs in this country. Most of them have been in place for many more years than you or I have been conceived eggs in this country. They have work great for many years and would have plenty of funds in them if politicians like in your party and the other didn't raid them. When you raided them you guys didn't put any IOU's in there for us tax payers. Now then, you say the only way to fix them is to slowly eliminate them. Well sir, you not doing a very good job for the 99% of us in this great country. Go back to the ledger sheet and do your job and offer us a plan that will work. If you only want to help the 1% I'm sure one of them will give you work. You know trickle down effect. You won't get elected this way

Paul Ryan rubber stamped the entire budget busting Bush agenda all the way down the line and created this debt mess in the first place. Doesn't he have some rape victims he can mess with?
