Ryan: Obama needs to 'show us' a budget plan

Fayetteville, North Carolina (CNN) - During a visit to the Fort Bragg area Thursday, vice presidential hopeful Rep. Paul Ryan said President Barack Obama needs to come up with a budget agreement or else North Carolina's defense industry and one of the nation's largest military populations will be threatened.

The House Budget Committee chairman – along with other Republicans – voted for the original debt ceiling deal that led to the current stalemate. The policy came about after a congressional "super committee" failed to reach a deficit-reduction plan last year. Months earlier, Congress had voted to implement the cuts if the super committee didn't ultimately find an agreement.

"And so the House has already passed, as well as the Senate, which has now been finally signed into law, bipartisan legislation saying put up or shut up. The president needs to show us how he plans on putting this in place, if he is not going to help us pass legislation preventing it in the first place, so we're now waiting for that answer," Ryan said.

Mitt Romney's running mate accused Obama of putting politics before the nation's military.

"It's our duty to preserve this legacy to support our voluntary force of men and women who volunteer to serve our nation and not let them be pawns in a political game because this is messing with jobs and lives," he said.

"[W]hatever happens between now and November, will happen between now and November," said Ryan. "But what Mitt Romney is committed to doing is making sure this doesn't take place, and that means if we have to do it in January, we will do it in January."

Ryan said he will try to "fix it retroactively" between November and January. "Now we believe that we have a procedural way in the Senate to advance that legislation very quickly and get it to the next president of the United States who I believe is going to be Mitt Romney, to pass that into law, and retroactively prevent that sequester from taking place in January."

If Republicans and Democrats fail to come to a budget agreement by the end of the year, significant cuts to the Department of Defense could become a reality. Beginning in 2013, the federal government would undergo a series of budget reductions to defense and non-defense programs that would total $1.2 trillion in cuts over the next decade.

It was during a roundtable discussion at a small defense contracting company in Fayetteville where Ryan said the looming defense cuts could cost 55,000 jobs in North Carolina.

"The president's demanding a massive tax increase on small businesses which will cost us jobs in exchange for these defense sequesters. We don't want to trade small business jobs for military jobs. We want more jobs across the board," Ryan said.

Speaking to about 100 people associated with the military or defense industries, the seven-term congressman from Wisconsin held up a card that was in the pocket of his blazer and shared something he hasn't talked about since he became Romney's running mate on August 11.

"I carry this card in my pocket. I've carried it with me for years. I don't really talk about this often," he said. "It's the men and women who have lost their lives, the men who have lost their lives in Wisconsin. I've talked to these families, been at the funerals. It's the ultimate sacrifice."

Can't wait to see the debate between Ryan and Biden. Ryan is going to hand Biden his head on a platter.

Oh Lord ! Please don't let Romney/Ryan' seeds be. The average people cannot afford their plan. This country is not ready yet for the anti-middle class like R/R.

Um, excuse me Mr. Representative, but it's the responsibility of CONGRESS to develop a budget to be reviewed by both houses and signed or kicked back for further review. Remember Congress? That cushy job you've had for the last 14 years, where you've been paid well and given FREE health care to do absolutely nothing of value???

The college this little moron Friar Ryan went to was known for sports, not academics. As an economist said, Friar Ryan has been reading some books on economics & spouting ideas from these ancient economists without understanding anything he is saying.

The military is too big and too expensive. That means military jobs will be cut. Its a government program, like welfare, except bigger. So good luck, but we're tired of paying for that industry that costs us all so much.

these automatic cuts were put in place by the repubs! they did it trying to pressure the democrat to agree to keeping the tax cuts for the wealth! now the repubs can sit down and talk or be responsible for this country going over the cliff. besides these cuts are only $1.3 trillion over the next ten years! Obama's budget he sent to the house was $4 trillion in cuts over the next 10 years! the house sits on it because they don't want to cut one thin dim from defense! its their police force they like to use all over the world minding ever countries business. so botton your lip Ryan because you and your tea party buddies set this up to happen so you repubs need to fix your own mess ! that will be new to you repubs for a change!

    Ryan is a lightweight.

He has no experience in real world economics.

The president submitted a budget which of course made serious cuts and the GOP would have no part of it.

Not only that, but then the GOP goes and attaches a bunch of poison pills just to make sure that no Democrats can vote for the budget bill either.

The GOP is a bunch of snakes.

  13. The GOP Medicare Voucher plan will contain a "Legalize Euthanasia" clause and a free gun for suicide

The seniors will need to kill themselves when they run out of health care money.

How about really explaining your budget plan to seniors? I bet if all those one foot in the grave seniors at the village and around the country knew that you want to put their Social Security money in vouchers and into Wall Street or that you want to cut their Medicare benefits or Medicaid to the poor they might see you in a different light.
If you are a senior who only gets $12,000 a year you will be paying, if the twit pair is elected, half of your SS money for healthcare. Being old is inevitable. Being stupid can be helped and you don't have to be one.

Why is this Party Of God clown considered a budget expert? He's 42 and he's spent the last 12 years on the public dole, on Federal Welfare as a Congressman, proposing failed budgets that are accepted by neither his party or the Democrats. This clown is *famous* for being an ineffective failure! This is who Romney chose! What an 1d1ot!

    Over the cliff!!!
Then rebuild the budget from the bottom up, with only the essentials.
The Tea Party created this mess by not compromising. Now, they are whining that it is President Obama's fault. He supported Simpson-Bowles. So did the gang of 6, except for Cantor, who honored his pledge to Norquist instead of serving the voters.
The GOTP have made their own bed. Now, let them sleep in it.

The card Ryan carries in his pocket holds the names of those who lost their lives in service of our country. However, Paul Ryan will purposely follow the lead of people like Mitch McConnell and vote against the interests of the very friends and families of these dead heroes. He has voted against anything and everything that President Obama has offered. No one on this earth is always wrong and this obstruction tells Americans how shallow the Republicans are and how little they care for the general public's needs.

The problem is that any budget passed by the House is so weighted against the middle class and everyone but the wealth that the Senate wouldn't touch it. Ryan seems to come close to calling Obama a traitor to the US. The problem is that Ryan and Romney's view is that corporations can do no wrong and the military shouldn't have any cuts in funding. That leads down the wrong road because that leaves all poor and middle class to be in the military as the only way to get a decent paying job.

A budget is important . What a country gets and spends is decided on that. if spending is not under control then there is no plan to have a balanced budget.A household cannot be run like that, a nation also should not be in such a position.
