Ryan: Obama needs to 'show us' a budget plan

Fayetteville, North Carolina (CNN) - During a visit to the Fort Bragg area Thursday, vice presidential hopeful Rep. Paul Ryan said President Barack Obama needs to come up with a budget agreement or else North Carolina's defense industry and one of the nation's largest military populations will be threatened.

The House Budget Committee chairman – along with other Republicans – voted for the original debt ceiling deal that led to the current stalemate. The policy came about after a congressional "super committee" failed to reach a deficit-reduction plan last year. Months earlier, Congress had voted to implement the cuts if the super committee didn't ultimately find an agreement.

"And so the House has already passed, as well as the Senate, which has now been finally signed into law, bipartisan legislation saying put up or shut up. The president needs to show us how he plans on putting this in place, if he is not going to help us pass legislation preventing it in the first place, so we're now waiting for that answer," Ryan said.

Mitt Romney's running mate accused Obama of putting politics before the nation's military.

"It's our duty to preserve this legacy to support our voluntary force of men and women who volunteer to serve our nation and not let them be pawns in a political game because this is messing with jobs and lives," he said.

"[W]hatever happens between now and November, will happen between now and November," said Ryan. "But what Mitt Romney is committed to doing is making sure this doesn't take place, and that means if we have to do it in January, we will do it in January."

Ryan said he will try to "fix it retroactively" between November and January. "Now we believe that we have a procedural way in the Senate to advance that legislation very quickly and get it to the next president of the United States who I believe is going to be Mitt Romney, to pass that into law, and retroactively prevent that sequester from taking place in January."

If Republicans and Democrats fail to come to a budget agreement by the end of the year, significant cuts to the Department of Defense could become a reality. Beginning in 2013, the federal government would undergo a series of budget reductions to defense and non-defense programs that would total $1.2 trillion in cuts over the next decade.

It was during a roundtable discussion at a small defense contracting company in Fayetteville where Ryan said the looming defense cuts could cost 55,000 jobs in North Carolina.

"The president's demanding a massive tax increase on small businesses which will cost us jobs in exchange for these defense sequesters. We don't want to trade small business jobs for military jobs. We want more jobs across the board," Ryan said.

Speaking to about 100 people associated with the military or defense industries, the seven-term congressman from Wisconsin held up a card that was in the pocket of his blazer and shared something he hasn't talked about since he became Romney's running mate on August 11.

"I carry this card in my pocket. I've carried it with me for years. I don't really talk about this often," he said. "It's the men and women who have lost their lives, the men who have lost their lives in Wisconsin. I've talked to these families, been at the funerals. It's the ultimate sacrifice."

The RepubliCONS vowed from the 2008 election to oppose any plan Obama may submit which has led to record filibusters by the obstructionists. This took place even if they originally supported the plan. The RepubliCON agenda is to create corporate feudalism similar to the gilded age of the 1920's. So the Take Education Away Party has the four G platform; Guns, Gynecology, God and Gays.

Obama may not give you a budget. He is heavily leaning on his base (black, gay & lesbian, feminists, union workers etc). So he may not even give any substance of a budget or plan. He will just continue to defame & deface Romney with character attack and hopefully win re-election. According to poll, Romney has the edge among white Evangelical Christians (70-18 percent), white voters (53-36 percent), married voters (51-38 percent), men (48-40 percent) and seniors (50-41 percent). Obama has the advantage among black voters (86-6 percent) and women (48-42). Well most % are not that far apart except the black votes. Looks like the black votes don't care if Obama has any budget or plans to revive the economy. It looks like this is going to be a race and faith based election regardless.

Maybe, someone in the GOP should remind ryan that it is the congress that does all that funky budget stuff and NOT the president??? That just might help him do his job.

So what Ryan is essentially saying is that unless we spend more and tax less, like he proposes, we will have a crushing deficit. Obama, who wants to raise taxes and cut spending as he and Congress agreed, is clueless. Then he proposes to "fix" Medicare by saving the first dollar in 2023, yet spend $716 billion more than Obama. The truth is stranger than fiction.

We should slash defense spending. We spend more on defense than the next 20 nations do COMBINED!Repubs talk a big game about cutting spending, until you bring up the defense budget.

Also, Mr. Romney needs to show us his tax returns! What did he do with the money he got for the Italian Yellow Pages sale that shorthanded the investors and the Italian government? Where did he funneled them through? Is that the way he would govern if elected president?

This guy is a major part of why this sequestration is hanging over the country and he wants it to look like its Obamas fault. He had a chance to work out a deal to avoid it months ago and sat there with his arms folded saying either do things my way or we'll let it happen so looks to me like its time for him to either put up or shut up.These clowns have spent the past 3+ years creating problem after problem and then trying to blame it all on the president.

  11. Cut The Military

It's a good thing if we cut the military spending. It's a large waste of money since the USA wants to be the dictators of the world while we pay for it. The US military is way to large and is far more than what is needed.

Obama needs to hurry with his plan that was published last year. But he needs a new one so they have something to criticize. Misinterpret and raise hell about

For more than a decade now Ryan has been willing to spend vast amounts of money on the military while preaching about debts and deficits when spending on Americans in need comes up. Well, Mr. Ryan, you are one of the authors of the current gridlock and your refusal to compromise with the President led us to this point, so you get no points for trying to blame Obama.

It's not "a massive tax increase on small businesses"; it's a modest increase on taxes (from 36% to 39%) on the wealthiest Americans who can afford it.

And what's this "fix retroactively" using some obscure procedure in the Senate? Sounds like Lyin' Ryan has in mind to be a dictator, not the POTUS.

And if you're looking for President Obama's budget plan, go to whitehouse.gov, search on "budget plan" and voila! There it is, the President's Budget for Fiscal Year 2013.

Like I said, Lyin' Ryan is at it again ...

google "Mitt Romney worst presidential candidate of all time"...His numbers are breaking records. I especially like the daily kos's humorous take on Mitt. How can anyone Republican, Democrat or Independant justify voting for this guy...He represents everything that is wrong, not only with America, but with humanity.

Look how miserable, angry and confused the people behind Ryan are...And these are the ones that are suppose to be supporting him?

BTW, on the White House website, you can also see past budgets and download the Fiscal Year 2013 budget as an e-book to read on your e-reader.

Again, Lyin' Ryan will never tell you this; he'd rather lie to you and play you for a fool to manipulate you into voting for him 'n' Mittens and (once again) against your own self-interest ...

Here's what lies at the root of this and all our other problems. The joke for 12 straight years is"tax cuts for the rich create jobs".The economy has gone down the toilet since this farce began. The jobs are being sent overseas and the job creators are stashing all their money in other countries while the rest of us are expected to shoulder the burden by cutting our "handouts " that we all worked for.Yet the corporations are getting handouts from the government as they make billons more than they ever did.
