Rules to double U.S. fuel economy by 2024
New York (CNNMoney) - The Obama administration finalized new fuel economy rules Tuesday that within 12 years will almost double today's standard for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon.
The rules, which have been in the works for several years, will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new cars. But in the long run, regulators say, drivers will spend less on gas, outweighing the additional cost at the dealership. They say the rules will also help reduce the nation's oil imports.

Good-bye, 6/8-cylinder 4WD SUVs. Mine's a six, and it's great in the snow and for road trips. I'll miss it. Let's hope they can figure out how to make an electric car for folks without a garage to park it in for recharging.
I'm getting a Chevy Volt. Seen one the other day and asked the driver when's the last time he fueled up. He told me two months ago.
Thats good. He never seems to work on ideas to improve the economy just more regulations. Campaigning and regulations.

The American taxpayer wishes there were more people like you. But there aren't. In fact, they had to shut down productions for months because they couldn't sell them. Somehow America will make good on that $25 billion Obama still has in GM. So far it hasn't been a great deal. ( Unless you are a UAW boss... )
Ummmm....someone needs to force the car makers' hands to buck the oil company bully keeping them from making cars that can get 100 miles per hour.
Today a six cylinder Honda Accord or Toyota Camry is faster than a 1966 Pontiac GTO or a mid 70's Corvette.
Most drivers of today's cars could give up this performance without noticing it; yielding better fuel efficiency with today's technology.
Auto makers fought tooth and nail against air-bag standards and other safety standards common today. For the right-wing nutjobs that oppose any regulations that don't come from their party, consider that our recent wars were fought to maintain stability in the oil-rich Middle East. Our soldiers are dying so you can drive a gas-hog.
Also, reduced fuel consumption equals less greenhouse gases.
New regulations mean new designs, engine platforms and cars. Sounds like jobs to me.

Maybe if those mooching GOP congressmen would earn their money and pass some of President Obama's bills, this country would be much better off. If President Obama fails, it will be culmination of the Republican plot to make him do so. They boldly declared their intentions at the beginning of his term, long before he had a chance to even begin governing. President Obama, American has failed you, not the other way around.
Why the USA economy will fail. B.O. believes regulations will solve all our problems...A very agressive EPA cowtowing to California standards will be bring us very very bad job growth. I know ...we all want a better environment...Ethanol, electirice and perhaps natural gas. Smaller cars and better efficieny now will be appreciated 100 years from now by our ancestors. But the method and arrogance that B.O. thinks he can dictate this is incredible. This will destroy the auto industy and job growth. The little hybrids and penalties will cost americans pleny of money. Hard to say how this will be modified...but B.O. gets his feel good headline and his box checked off. But in 2-5 years....this will be changed.

its good to see how rich people are more concern about their wealth and most middle class republicans are thinking they (Romney/ryan) will help them achieve a better living.. lol.. you republicans are so dumb... you think by having bush you achieved economic stability? come on... you came to trillion dollar deficit its due to your republican president (Bush) got so greedy and cause your nation lots of money and its all from your taxes.. when will you come to realization? at least obama tried he best to change and all you guys do is whine for the things he has'nt fulfilled. There are lots of loop hole with romney and ryan ticket, but at the end of the day you Americans will need to make a decision on who makes more sense to govern the nation. for past 4 years you guys have progressed, sometimes its better to have a repeat history by having republican president and have your nation go down. America proofs and shows , rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer.. we dont have to go all the way to africa or india or even china to see that, your country has everything.. most of all alot of ignorant republicans who only wants what benefits them.

Like this is going to happen in 12 years!! Obama is essentially government mandating the extinction of large vehicles. Consider these thousands of extra dollars, that many cannot afford, to be another example of the Obamacare tax penalty. Do as the government demands or pay through the nose. Or maybe it is his plan to save GM by forcing us all to by GM Volt cars?
THIS is exactly why Obama abd the Democrats need to go in November.

They start at just under $40,000 and you need a garage to hold the charging station so that you can charge it up. I think GM may have over estimated just how large a market they had for such vehicle. They need to come up with something that doesn't require the owner to own a house with an attached garage. The requirements rule out college kids, apartment dwellers and folks without an enclosed garage. Ever been down south? Many homes have car ports, not garages.

Yes, but he likely plugged into an electrical plug that got its power from burning something else. And where will this be done when Obama shuts down all the coal pwered power plants?
Electric cars sound good, but you are just replacing one energy source with another. I also understand that the cars don't go that far before they need to be charged up agan. And what about the cost of electricity? Our love of cars has trapped up into a no-win situation. And don't forget that most Americans cannot afford a $40,000 car and electing Mitt Romney won't change that.

12 years car prices are going way up????? Obama is so out of touch with the reality of what most people make in a paycheck but then this is coming from a guy who has never had to worry about making a paycheck, who has barely worked in his life and honestly he lived a very good, financially sound life as a kid because both grandma and mom made very good salaries working for banks. Obama's lack of living in the real world shows in this rule. Families are barely making it right now, unemployment is high, gas prices are high, rent is high, people are barely working 30 hours a week and this is his big announcement. Obama is really a rich kid from Hawaii.

Electric car, eh? Might as well call it a coal car, since that's where 50% of the electricity in this country comes from. Issue permits for 100 new nuclear plants and I'll buy into it.
Guys, let's be real, Obama is a kid from a pretigious school in Hawaii, who wore stylish, preppy fashions, traveled to exotic places, has no idea what is like to pay bills, have to work 2 jobs, work till 1 or 2 in the morning and as an adult did not worry about paying his studies and seriously never, ever looked in any of his pictures that he was down on his luck. I am not saying he is not a nice person, I am just saying that he was protected, shielded from any financial troubles by his grandmother who was the Vice President of a huge bank in Hawaii and the woman made good money as did Obama's mom. Seriously, his mother established microfinancing networks in New York, India and Pakistan. She used to set up village credit programs under the U.S. Agency for International Development and was the Officer of the Ford Foundation to Jakarta and let's not forget the high position she had with the bank of Pakistan for which she lived in the Int'l Hilton Hotel for 5 years. Obama is not like everyone else, he is out of touch with everyday people. Coming from Hawaii is not easy, especially when you come from such nice life.
