Excerpts: Healey remarks at Republican National Convention

(CNN) - The Republican National Convention released the following excerpts of former Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey's prepared remarks to the GOP convention in Tampa, Florida on Thursday evening.

Healey served under Romney, who was governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007.

"Massachusetts was in deep trouble. We had a massive budget gap and soaring unemployment. People in my state were losing hope - for themselves, their families, and their children. Sadly, very much like our country finds itself today....

"Mitt Romney answered the call of service, and accepted the challenge. How did he fix our state? Well, he quickly assembled a cabinet of the best and the brightest, drawing on both parties, Republicans and Democrats, half women, half men, to give him the full spectrum of ideas and advice. He respected different opinions, valued open debate, and when it was all said and done, Mitt Romney knew how to make a decision. Governor Romney did what many thought was impossible. He turned around a three billion dollar budget gap, and created a two billion dollar rainy day fund....

"Those are the facts and figures, but when people find out that I served as Mitt Romney's Lieutenant Governor, they always ask me the same question: What's he like? First and foremost, Mitt is a good and honorable man, committed to public service and his country. On the morning he took the oath of office, his first act was to focus public attention on those in need. We served breakfast to homeless veterans. Encouraging volunteerism, and acknowledging the special debt we owe to those who sacrifice for our country."

Oh yeah.......very patriotic guy that Mitt. While many of us from his generation reported to boot camp......he reported to France. Committed to his country? Not so much........if that were true, why is his money "outsourced" to banks elsewhere? Sorry lady......I'm not buying it.

@ California Gary: We have a volunteer military and when there is a draft, you have something called a 'draft number.' Why don't you take some time and look up what Mitt's number was and what number the draft went through. To say somebody isn't qualified because they didn't volunteer after not having their draft number called is about as loony as a guy named Gary in California. And what was your draft number? How many tours did you serve?

tyki.......I didn't say he wasn't "qualified"........but I do question his committment to anything greater than himself. FYI – I am well aware of the draft of that time......and I did not get drafted.......I was one of those volunteers you speak of and served 10 years – doing an overseas tour in 1972. I personally have no use for someone who favors a war, and then does everything they can to avoid serving in it. Had he voiced opposition to war based on personal beliefs and then avoided it.......I can deal with that. That's not what Romney did....it was ok for others to go, just not him.

Ms. Healey served as Lt. Governor and did yeoman's work. She was given some tasks that were a little controversial and managed them for the Governor. She took on more responsibilities when he decided to run for president. She paints a little rosier picture of MA than some residents do. The western part of the state continued its downward spiral. Towns which were once home to a myriad of workers and bosses lost their charm. Springfield, Holyoke, Chicopee were all part of that spiral. The schools were hard hit. A rainy day fund is only good if it is there to help when problems occur. That money never seemed to go west.

I've voted dems for Prez (3 elections) my whole life but have always seen myself as someone in the middle who could go either way based on our country's needs. This year, the Repubs will most likely get my vote. However...are the R's stupid? You will get the crossover vote if you separate Church from State. Naming Jesus Christ in an opening speech is dumb. While you may believe he is in charge, others may not. I don't care if our Pres is a Muslim/Mormon/Christian/Jew/Stuffed Animal or a Lego Doll....keep religion out of your prayers and maybe someone in the middle will cross over!!! Don't be an idiot. Don't sound like th ereligious extremists in the rest of the world that we are always fighting. The Repub campaign manager should double check each person's speech before they go onstage and make a fool out of America and their party.
