Obama takes his seat

(CNN) – The Obama campaign offered a pointed comeback to Clint Eastwood's Republican National Convention chair sketch Thursday night tweeting, "This seat's taken" along with a picture of Obama in his Cabinet Room chair with a plaque inscribed: "The President."

Clint Eastwood was revealed as the GOP convention's "mystery guest" Thursday prior to the evening's prime time rundown and following media speculation of the schedule's empty slot. Eastwood's speech drew laughs, criticism and blank stares as he conversed with an empty chair placed on stage next to the podium. Eastwood, addressing an unseen President Barack Obama, condemned the incumbent for his ineffective policies, railing on his campaign's political tactics and handing a star studded endorsement to Thursday's intended focus, Mitt Romney.

Naturally, the notorious actor and director's speech sent the Twitter-verse reeling.

It wasn't long before Obama's campaign joined in the Twitter banter and jumped on Eastwood's seemingly unscripted speech, tweeting the picture of the commander in chief in his official chair.

And it wasn't long before that photo prompted a response.

Friday afternoon, the National Republican Senatorial Committee tweeted, "This seat's not," accompanied with a picture of an identical (but empty) chair facing the words "White House Jobs Council."

"It's been over 227 days since President Obama has met with his job's council," read the text on a webpage linked from the NRSC tweet. "Add to that the over 1,200 days since Senate Democrats have passed a budget and it is no wonder we are facing an unprecedented jobs and debt crisis."

Of course, both tweets included links to the respective campaigns' websites - the Obama campaign page sought a donation, while the NRSC page asked visitors to sign a digital petition.

Crickets! We all know it, it's ok to say you made a mistake, that you were wrong. But, to defend a president that has done nothing, that simply isnt what this country needs right now.

Did anyone else take note that the convention center in which the RNC took place with the banner "We Built This", was actually about 60% funded by government money? DOH!

I think it would have been more accurate for an empty suit for Clint Eastwood to be talking to, or an empty golf cart.

I am proud of my (our) president, and I pray the rest of America will see to it that he remains in his chair for another term. I think the "entertainment value" of having Clint Eastwood (whom I like as an actor & director) perform this way during a political convention shows desperation on the part of the Romney campaign. Not sure whose idea it was, but I'm sure the RNC or Gov. Romney's people must have known what his "speech" was going to be.

You tell them Mr President. All that Koch brothers and their ilk's money will go right down the drain..or least we will put them in Mitt Roney's car elevators first for a sweet ride downhill. Our President Barrack Hussein Obama is around for four more years. All that Convention hype does not move even an eyebrow. Bring on your voter suppression, our boots on the ground machine is alive and kicking and will be kicked up a notch come election day.

And speaking of Mitt's bottom, I heard he got his nickname when he bent over in the shower in high school and somebody said, "Hey, that looks like a catcher's mit!" I'll bet he never gets his "mit" on the president's chair!

Hey Truth...ha, funny, you obviously don't know much about truth. When even one house of congress is occupied by the other political party...no president can get anything done. Simple.

I wonder. I wonder if the Eastwood performance has any connection to the rumors circulating two weeks ago that that Obama double they used at a conference once upon a time would make an appearance. The Rs did not look like an organization that was serioius and able-minded enough to run this country and get the economy going.

Obama and Democrats can respond to Eastwood's "empty chair" sketch with an "empty table" ad. Republicans are all talk, yet they refuse to come to the table on anything (health care, debt ceiling, jobs plan, and so on). No, cutting taxes is not a jobs plan, not if people like Romney can just keep the money or stash it in overseas accounts.

Good point - the real empty chairs have been at the Congressional negotiating table, where America's problems really get solved, these last four years, and they all belong to Republicans. Remember that when you're voting for your House Representative or Senator in November: if you aren't voting for the solution then you are voting for the problem.

Any GOP alternative in that chair would be a complete disaster. The only reasonable candidate in the GOP clown car was Huntsman, and he polled in the single digits, that is the state of affairs of a party gone completely nuts. Look at their VP choice, the opposite of a statesman and resorting to lies and distortions to get his message across. Imagine, this ice cold man would be a heart beat away from the presidency...only in America.

So what, there was a link with the picture asking for donations! Isn't that what one does when running for the Presidency of the United States or was that wrong too? I used to have a lot of respect for Mr Eastwood, but now not so much. I'm actually a little saddened by the spectacle he and some thought was funny.

@Yonni "who restore American position in the world"

I am not sure I like the position of conquering country. His re-election hopes are polling 25-30% in many third world countries that probably worry they will see the bomb drones or get the Libya treatment if we decide it is in our interest (Libya = big OIL reserve). And as much celebration as it was, a liberal president should really hold back on taking credit for assassination of any sort.

Read more than US news for sheep. Vote Green Party. Power to the People.

With all of the post acceptance speach commentary from the press this morning focusing on "what a wonderful family man Mitt Romney is..." I wanted to puke. How moving, how touching, how kind he is – we're looking for a president here not a friend. Why is it that the focus is on all this BS and not on the fact that Ryan and Romney are liers and the fact that the math they're trying to sell doesn't work. That's what I want to know about – not what a wonderful husband Mitt is – that doesn't matter to me – the numbers and the truth are what matters and these guys are short on both.
