Romney demands accountability

Lakeland, Fla. (CNN) - The morning after the triumphal culmination of the Republican convention, Mitt Romney asked a Florida audience to hold him and his running mate Paul Ryan accountable for their campaign promises once they do the same for President Obama.

"We want to be held accountable for the promises we made last night, and the night before," Romney exhorted the audience again and again at a steamy outdoor rally in Lakeland, Florida, and added of President Obama: "You listened to the last guy running for president, he laid out what he wanted to do, he was unable to do it. It's time to give someone new a chance."

The GOP nominee was embarking on a stepped-up campaign schedule in the days following his party's nominating convention. Romney's campaign announced a surprise visit to Louisiana Friday afternoon, where the nominee planned to survey damage from Hurricane Isaac with the state's governor, before flying on to Ohio that night.

Ryan was headed to Virginia for a Friday afternoon rally, where Romney had also been slated to speak before the Louisiana trip was announced.

In Lakeland, both Romney and Ryan re-lived the pomp, circumstance, and personal touches that helped define the carefully-choreographed gathering of party officials and delegates in Tampa this week.

"Last night you got to know me a little better with some friends that talked about my life, the things that have been part of my life in the past," Romney said of the parade of church officials, business leaders and Massachusetts leaders who spoke about him on-stage Thursday night. "I was embarrassed from time to time with the nice things that were said. Some people were overly generous but I appreciated it."

Ryan, standing beside his wife Janna, chimed in with his approval of Romney's speech.

"This country needs leadership and you know what we saw last night?" he asked. "We saw a man introduce himself to them, he brought us into his family. We saw a man of faith, of integrity, of achievement."

After giving their prime time convention speeches, both men faced criticism for repeating claims that have been debunked by independent fact-checkers.

Friday, Ryan stayed on the broad theme of Obama's "laundry list of broken promises" from his convention speech earlier in the week.

"The unemployment here in Florida is 8.8 percent. Foreclosures, houses under water, the highest poverty rates in a generation. Half of all the college graduates are either unemployed or are not working in a field that they studied for. College graduates do not spend their 20s in their childhood bedrooms looking up at fading Obama posters wondering when they can move on and get on with their lives," he said at the outdoor rally.

The vice presidential hopeful did not however mention the story about Obama and the GM plant closing in Janesville that the campaign and Ryan himself spent the following day defending and clarifying.

Okay, I'll hold you accountable. I'd like to see more tax returns from you, Mr. Romney. What? Yeah, I thought not.

OBAMA FAILURE. Not surprising though...we dont know who is his or what he has ever done. Nothing in the last four years thats for sure and nothing in the next four either!! Unless of course he goes to Hollywood, perhaps his great speeches could serve a purpose there?

Mitt Romney concerns me. Mitt is so deeply immersed in a reality that no longer exists. Ronald Reagan is long gone ... as is the age within which he lived and governed. The "lights" on Reagan's shinning city on the hill were turned off long ago when Reagan's own trickle down economics ended up doing nothing more than tricking up, keeping the folks down below in continual despair. I am not disenchanted with President Obama. I am disenchanted with Republican ideologues who have done everything in their grasp to keep "trickle down" policies going straight up the ladder. President Obama has done many things which I don't agree on. However, I am also aware of the continual bashing from the GOP he's had to deal with. Mitt Romney is only deceiving himself if he truly thinks he can "lift America up". His own party is now turning on itself with their hate and anger. We all saw that coming. Or should have.

And here comes Mitt Romney wanting to turn the page ... not forward, but backward. Back to a time when HE most benefited ... but not, I think, a time when most Americans benefited. Indeed, the Bush years proved once again just how wrong the Mitt Romney's are for America. And yet for they always insist they know best.

How fitting then that the RNC choose Clint Eastwood as their spokesperson ... an angry old man wishing for the good old days. But not concerned at all for what happened in between their peak years and their older years, or why it all came crashing down on them. Accountablity, my foot. I have yet to understand GOPers and their demands. Let them account to America for what they created during 2000-2008.

    Bizarre Behavior? YES

YES this is a very bizarre behavior on the platform of a presidential campaign. It really cast a gloomy cloud over the overall message of the convention. This is very unfortunate, however' it is a stark reflection of how desperate Romney is to get elected, doing anything...even something as bizarre as what Clintwood did. I can understand his age is getting to him, I can understand him going back to his dirty harry days...being dirty.

This, however, is NOT the time to poke fun or go backwards. This must be FORWARD MARCH and Barrack Obama is on the right tract. Disaffected voters now have more disdain for the exclusive republican party.

Bizarre? YES...CERTAINLY!!! So is Mitt Romney.

Yeah, inexperience and incompetence has been delivered by Obama. No Hope & Change as promised. The country has barely survived 4 years of Obama. Another 4 years of this nightmare and we are toast. Time for some competent leadership in the WHitehouse. Romney/Ryan – The ONLY ones with SOLUTIONS.
That's it. Yupper. The above pretty much summarizes the entire message. "I'm better than he is." Think about the times that you may have heard someone say something to that effect. Were they actually better?

Mitt, no offense, but you're hardly "someone new."

Accountability? Show us your last ten years of tax returns and then we can talk.

Finally, the recent college grads I know who are still unemployed blame the Republican members of Congress who blocked Obama's jobs plans and undermined the US's credit rating so they could protect their rich donors from a scheduled tax increase. Accountability is back in your court, Mitt.

Accountability Mr. Romney? I thought you did not know that word and up to now you have not even released two years
tax return let alone the five years the DS are asking for. And I am surprised the journalists standing with you do not have the guts tom ask this questions once more, where is the tax returns Mr. Mitt.

Lets start with releasing his tax returns! Otherwise he has zero credibility on the accounability front.

    Mitt's accountability list:

1.Release His Tax Records for the last 10 years
2.Hold every Republican/TeaPartier in Congress responsible for the Nations credit stating drop.
3.Hold every Republican/TeaPartier in Congress responsible for the obstruction of any legislature that would have helped the country.
4.Admit (out loud) that Bush's Wars and Tax breaks for the rich tanked our economy.
5.Admit tax breaks for the rich and increased defense spending will do more harm than good.

There is Romneys 5 point plan.

    Accountability at its finest.

Accountability... Is how we thank the republican house for obstruction in November. I truly believe the economy would be recovering at a faster pace if not for the republican house. And who is Mitt Romney to be demanding accountability? I would like to thank him for doing his part in downsizing the economy.

Funny coming from someone who will not release their tax returns. No one seems to be holding the GOP accountable for almost four years of obstruction with the only goal being a one term president.

    OK Mitt,

As a taxpayer, I hold you accountable for the money YOU LOOTED the US Treasury to enrich yourself.

You see, part of your brand of capitalism at Bain involved buying a company with BORROWED money. You then took money out of the employee pension funds if you claimed they were "OVERFUNDED" [according to GAAP guidelines]. You and your investors then POCKETED this money. When you sold the companies and the retirees went to get the money, the US taxpayer, through the US Pension Guarranty corp, had to make up the SHORTFALL which was caused by Bain & Romney.

As one of your bossess that might hire you thru my vote, I`m holding you ACCOUNTABLE. Thanks for submitting your resume but the position of President is FILLED. I can`t hire someone that stole from me.

Liberals dont even mention the "A" word. No border security, no voter ID, no budget, no plan, no jobs, no national defense, no marriage, no religious freedom, no ideas other than taxes and spending and government progams! These are not the principles which our nation was built upon and in November you will be reminded again!

Yeah we want accountability too....where is your tax returns, if he didn't have anything to hide he would show them.....and what about that plane behind you......did Adelson or the Koch boys provide you with that plane....and then there is the overseas bank accounts.... this is what you call ACCOUNTABILITY!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. They ought to change from the elephant to the hippo...

Accountability?!? OK ... Answer these questions. DId you ever get amnesty for tax evasion? Seems pretty simple. Do you have an accurate timeline regarding your state residency, and time at Bain? Why did you slime all your primary opponents and continue to use "pants on fire" claims as a Christian? Why is there always a "redo" if you're so honest and transparent? Is it really any surprise that the American public doesn't trust you?
