According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, 62% of Empire State likely voters say they're backing President Barack Obama, with 34% supporting Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

The survey, released Thursday, indicates the president leads Romney by 35 points among women and by 20 points among men. Obama tops the former Massachusetts governor by 19 points among independent voters.

"The only reason President Barack Obama or Gov. Mitt Romney will come to New York is to raise money. Unless something unforeseen happens, the poll numbers say it's an Obama blow-out," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Besides his usual close to unanimous vote in the black community, Obama also carries the white vote in New York. Men like him a lot; women like him even more."

President Ronald Reagan's victory in New York in 1984 was the last time a Republican carried the state in a presidential election. Obama won 63% of the vote in New York in his 2008 victory over Sen. John McCain.

Twenty-nine electoral votes are at stake in New York.

The poll indicates that the state's U.S. Senate contest could also be a landslide for the Democrats. According to the survey, incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand leads GOP challenger Wendy Long 64%-27% among likely voters.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted September 4-9 (during and after the Democratic convention), with 1,486 likely voters in New York questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

    An increase in support from women as well as independents gives Barack Obama a post-convention advantage over challenger Mitt Romney. The president receives a five percentage-point bounce among women and a 12-point bounce among independents, in a Fox News poll released Wednesday.

    Overall, the Obama-Biden ticket tops the Romney-Ryan ticket by 48 to 43 percent among likely voters. The president’s advantage is within the poll’s margin of sampling error.

    Most understand that Obama will win this and the frantic arm waving and lying by Romney and Ryan is hyperbolic to the extreme..

    They will say absolutely anything now and is a pathetic display on their part.

    McConnell makes the state of Ky. look stupid, and I know they are not. With few exceptions folks in Ky are a friendly, hospitibal, intelligent bunch of people. I know they want the country to move forward. I hope they consider voter fraud if McConnell is re-elected . Cantor and Boehner should be booted along with McConnell. They are nothing but tea party "yes" males, and all they do is obstruct progress.

  5. Wake up People!

    Yesterday they said Willard was talking to the top GOP about how to spin his statements. I guess it worked because there was McCain on TODAY this morning bashing President Obama, talking over the interviewer. It's very clear, Mc Cain still holds a grudge against President Obama.

  6. Really?

    @California Gary – Who should we blame...Bush?
    And, yes, there is much more to being president than just playing golf, drinking beer, snubbing allies, hosting parties for Hollywood, dividing the country and running around the country campaigning instead of dealing with the grave problems we are facing. If you and your liberal friends would have taken the time to watch the RNC and find out who the REAL Romney is you would be surprised at how far from the truth your liberal media friends are in regard to the man.
    Romney/Ryan 2012 to begin the restoration of the U.S.A.

    "400,000 Chicago children miss another day of school while Obama's opinion on the Teacher strike evolves.."

    And if it was happening in Superior, WI, you'd be scraeming that Obama needs to keep his nose out of local business. It really makes me wonder when you guys are going to realize that your knee-jerk faux outrage machine does nothing but paint you into corners on every issue and then sets you up for easily highlighted self-contradiction.
