Romney to receive intel briefings starting next week

Sterling, Virginia (CNN) - After Mitt Romney was knocked back on his heels for commenting on the diplomatic attacks in the Middle East before all of the facts were in, advisers to the GOP nominee said he has yet to receive national security briefings from the Obama administration.

But those briefings will begin next week, a campaign spokesperson told CNN on Thursday.

"For the last several weeks, the Romney campaign has been in touch with the intelligence community to arrange intelligence briefings for Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan, consistent with tradition," the spokesperson, who declined to be named, told CNN. "They will begin next week and, beyond that, we will have no further comment."

It is customary in the latter stages of a general election campaign for presidential challengers to get these vital intelligence updates, regardless of which party is in power.

A top Romney foreign policy adviser acknowledged on Wednesday the death of a U.S. ambassador in Libya was not yet known to the campaign when it issued a statement that sharply criticized the president's handling of the crisis.

The initial statement released by the Romney campaign late Tuesday night did, however, note the death of an "American consulate worker."

A senior Romney strategist told CNN Thursday the campaign is confident the controversy sparked by the Republican contender's comments would blow over in time.

The strategist said Romney's criticism highlighted the "big differences" in the race.

After his comments inflaming many citizens because of his untimely, ignorent political stabs at the president after an ambassador,3 staffers were killed in Egypt,he may see hell freeze over before the president let's him see anything on national security.Romney is a security threat on to himself with his arrogence, ignorent style of politics,Pres.Obama pointing out his shoot first aim later policy of speaking has opened many eyes on both sides of the aisle recently and people aren't happy either, the polls show it,its definitly not presidencial either by any means ,but that's Romney he doesn't care!!

Is it absolutely necessary that Willard be giving briefings? Quite frankly, he obviously has no filter when it comes to how to handle these kinds of issues. There is a time and a place for political attacks. Yesterday was not one of them. If he is given these briefings, he will be shooting off with the mouth every second, no matter what diplomatic undertaking the President is involved in. At times like this, there is only one president, and that is President Obama. Willard should take a lesson from Republican hero Ronnie Regan and Bush Sr. When things went haywire with Carter trying to rescue the hostages in Iran, even though they running against Carter, both men said they stood with the President and it was time to come together as a people and a nation. Take a lesson Willard.

by the way, first thing I do before reading the ticker is to check the stock market. the dow is over 200 points and crossed the 13500 mark. so are our pention funds and 401K plans better off today than 4 years ago??? you bet your life it is. Even Mitt should be thankful to Obama since when Obama took over the dow was at 7000 and now it is double so I guess Mitt you owe POTUS a thank you doubling your wealth.

I understand how awkward it would be if the WH provides the requisite briefings – as Obama would be compelled to get them as well. That would cut 30-40 mins per day from his campaigning and golfing.

"It's customary for candidates to release at least 10 years of tax returns too."

Not to mention actaul details and specifics regarding the policy proopsals and "plans" they claim to be running on.

Why would he want to know the facts. They would just get in the way of the narrative he is trying to create.

Giving Romney national security information is just plain silly. What would be the reasoning behind it? He isn't the President. He is not holding any sort of political office. He shouldn't have access any more than the guy down the street from me should have access to this sort of information. This is need to know information and he does not have a need to know.

Maybe he shouldn't be trusted wit the information. His blundering around about the Libyan problem raises questions about his ability to understand what intelligence there is.

  15. Watching Obama and his Sheeple sweat is FUN!

To see and hear you folks sweat this election out is quite entertaining. Did you think the mistake of luck having a man named Barrack Hussein Obama would last more than 1 4 year term by any means? This country has come too far and has too much to risk for an amature like Obama. 3 Things : the economy, the jobs and the final nail in Obama's coffin the Arab spring fallback (Obama's baby). This election will go to Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and you "folks" better get that through your heads starting now. We dont want any race riots either, but if your feeling frisky we love our guns.........and our God too:). You freaks, degenerates have had enough fun ruining every moral and these United States. Time to step off.

Why would you give security briefings to someone who wants America to fail at everything?

"so that Romney cannot be informed ahead of the Presidential debates"

Are you on crack? Seriously. Whatever he gets told when they do his briefings CANNOT be talked about publicly. What don't you get about that?

No tax returns, no security briefings. Forget about what's customary. There's no law that says the President has to release vital security information to someone who's demonstrated he as no foreign policy expertise. Romney's also shown he doesn't have the gravitas to be Commander in Chief so no need to release anything to him.

Until Mitt Robme's five son's pick up a gun and join the US armed forces, he should NOT be given national security briefings!!!
Amen. I couldn't agree with you more.

He should get the briefings after he shows his tax records. The man can't be trusted, refuses to answer questions or provide specifics, and changes his stance on issues depending on how well it serves him. His tax receipts will either show how stacked the system is in favour of the wealthy or that he asked for amnesty in 2009 for illegal activities on his taxes or both.

"it is up to the Romney campaign to ask for the briefings. It's unclear whether the request has been made. Romney advisers declined to comment any further on the matter."

And that pretty much answers all we need to know. He hasn't asked. He hasn't been refused. Mittens is sitting on his thumb and blaming Obama for his ass hurting.
