Obama's convention bounce vanishes in Gallup poll

(CNN) – After a wave of post-convention approval, President Barack Obama's lead has faded, according to the latest Gallup daily tracking poll Tuesday.

Gallup's seven-day rolling average indicates that 47% of registered voters supporting Obama and 46% supporting Romney, returning the race back to narrow, pre-convention margins.

The president's lead was as high as seven points in Gallup's daily tracking poll last Wednesday.

A CNN Poll of Polls which averages the seven national survey of likely voters conducted following the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention earlier this month indicated that 49% of likely voters were backing the president, with 46% supporting the Republican nominee.

While the Gallup poll samples registered voters, it will move to sample the smaller pool of likely voters in the next few weeks as November draws near.

This latest edition of the Gallup poll was conducted September 11-17, nearly entirely before Monday's release of secretly recorded clips of Romney speaking at a private fundraiser in May that critics charge portray him as out of touch with ordinary Americans. Those clips have dominated coverage of the campaign trail over the past 24 hours.

The Gallup daily tracking poll is based on telephone interviews with approximately 3,050 registered voters; Margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points.

CNN's Dana Davidsen and Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

Let those poor Romney fans have some hope, people! The poor guy is hanging himself every day. But are we all going to give him a pass on showing those tax records? What is up with that?

Why does the media not understand how to interpret margin of error? The article should have said "Previously tied poll still statistically tied"

If any middle class to poor American is supporting Romney after he showed how he really feels about Americans that are not in the 1%, this is the dumbbest country in the world, and when he cuts medicare for the elderly, cut student loans and grants, and raise the tax on the middle class while extending Bush tax cuts for the Rich you all deserved what you get...This man policies are blatantly disrespectful to the middle class, if you think things are bad now, they will be 5 times as worst if this man is elected!!....There is a reason he is not showing his tax returns he has avoided paying taxes with offshore accounts, but wants to give speeches about taxing the middle class more? Educate yourself really!!

Just wait till Nov. 6th, people will come out and Pres.Obama will win this election. Everyone knows why the economy is so bad and they will not only re-elect the POTUS but the Republicans will lose seats in the congress because of their behavior and obstruction on returning the economy around.

The loss of the "bump" is not an issue. People will realize Obama is the only choice. He will bring peace to this great nation. The lion will lay with the lamb. The middle east will become our greatest allies during Obama's 2nd term
