Poll shows voters' reaction to Romney tapes

(CNN) – The surreptitiously recorded video of Mitt Romney at a campaign fund-raiser has had a moderately negative effect on registered voters, a poll released Wednesday indicated.

The poll, taken Tuesday, showed 36% of registered voters indicating they would be less likely to vote for Romney after the tapes were released. Twenty percent said they were more likely to vote for Romney, and 43% said the tapes made no difference.

Among independents, 15% said they were more likely to vote for Romney in November, compared to 29% who were less likely and 53% who said the tapes made no difference.

The poll was taken Tuesday, as the tapes were picked apart by media outlets and pundits. They were first released Monday night on the website of the liberal magazine Mother Jones.

In the tapes, Romney makes a political prediction based on his view of Obama's supporters.

"There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney says in one clip. "There are 47% who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing."

Adding to his argument about entitlement, Romney said his "job is not to worry about those people."

Romney also discusses, in pessimistic tones, the chances for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Gallup survey was taken by telephone from 885 registered voters, and the sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points. Among independents the sampling error was plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

Cue the following from the Flip apologists:

    1. "only 885?"
    2. "registered voters?"
    3. "they didn't call me"
    4. "Every poll is tilted left except Rasmussen. They;re the only reliable polling group"
    5. "polls don't count. Unless of course it shows Obama in a bad light. Then they do"

The Democrats need to run some commercials that have the tag line; "Was he talking aboutme?" The faces would be older white women, soldiers in uniform, a diabled latino vet, etc.

Too many Americans have a distorted view of themselves as not recieving anything from the government. To put the noose completely around Romneys neck they need to be made to see that Romney was maligning them.

Recalling, "Keep your government hands off my medicare"., they can`t assume that people will get it.

The is poll seems to show that no matter what Mitt Romney does, or how bad he performs in debates, there is large percentage of people who are voting for him simply because they have been taught to hate Pres. Obama.

Has anyone listened to the comments/advice he gave to Iran on the tape? You will be astonished as top how this guy is still running for president and the media has not highlighted that part cos that is the most damaging aspect of the tape.

Can Romney turn the reins over to John Huntsman? He'd be a great President and save what's left of the GOP.

I do not trust the news media at all. They can "doctor" anything to suit their views. I really do not understand though how people can believe everything Obama says right on live tv with his prompter. Obama knows how to deceive and people do not want to admit his deceit.

He's just not presidential. His first order of business if elected would be to cut taxes for the wealthy and go to war with Iran. No thank you.

As a latina I tell Romney that even if he were a latino he won't ever get my vote. He does not understand America because all the time he has been in a millionaire circle.

Romney only cares about the Rich and the ultra rich and will say anything to any given audience in order to get the job. Obama, while he has not been successful in all matters, at least tries to honor his words. He is thoughtful, measured in his actions.

Did CNN poll them again after they found out the tape had been edited and/or part of it deleted? I'm guessing they didn't.

I am far more shocked and disturbed by Obama's comments at Loyola University where he championed the redistribution of wealth .. that is a scary proposition..and we are already seeing signs of Obama trying to implement this system.

Is it really that surprising? There's a percentage of the population who will never vote for anyone but a Republican – even if that man stands to take money right from their pockets, even if he insults them TO THEIR FACES – these Republican voters are diehards and will never EVER change their vote.

Rudy of NYC writes " The is poll seems to show that no matter what Mitt Romney does, or how bad he performs in debates, there is large percentage of people who are voting for him simply because they have been taught to hate Pres. Obama."

This is a Democratic ploy - demonize all who rightly criticize Obama. Many people (most people) will vote for Romney becasue Obama has failed terribly - it has nothing to do with hate, or race, or class warfare - Obama has simply failed America.... it is that simple rudy - so knock off the hate speech – that is a tired Democrativ line we are all sick of hearing
