Ryan outfits daughter with deer-hunting gear

Cincinnati, Ohio (CNN) – Gearing up for deer-hunting season, Rep. Paul Ryan bought hunting clothes for his daughter to go with the rifle the Republican vice presidential nominee gave her for Christmas.

"She's hunted with me but this is the first time she gets to do the hunting herself," Ryan said of daughter Liza. "She's 10 years old and you can hunt starting at 10. I got her a rifle for Christmas last year and so I'm getting her ready."

On Tuesday in Ohio, between a town hall in Cincinnati and a rally with GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Vandalia, Ryan stopped at Bass Pro Shops in the Forrest Park neighborhood to get his daughter outfitted for hunting season.

The outdoorsman went directly to the "Women's Camo" area to check out their assortment of camouflage items. He purchased his daughter gloves, a beanie and a bib and paid for the $101.14 bill in cash. With a couple items in hand, he explained to reporters the hat and gloves include carbon which helps block a human's scent.

The Wisconsin-native, tapped to be Romney's running mate in August, often mentions his love of hunting on the campaign trail. Ryan tries to cast their Democratic opponent, President Barack Obama, as out of touch because of a comment he made in the 2008 campaign in which he said, "People like to cling to their guns and their religion."

"Hey, I'm a Catholic deer-hunter. I am happy to be clinging to my guns and my religion," Ryan first said in Carnegie, Pennsylvania on Aug. 21.

Liza, the oldest of Ryan's three children, received her first rifle for Christmas last year. "I got her a Remington 700 243 junior model – 243 is a caliber – it's a good gun," Ryan, an avid bowhunter, explained to reporters at the store.

According to an ">interview with Deer & Deer Hunting magazine, Ryan "shoots a Mathews Z7 Xtreme compound and loves the thrill of bowhunting, but also enjoys firearms."

"My daughter she's been hunting with me for years, watching me, but she's old enough this year to hunt on her own," he said. "She's really looking forward to it."

Ryan said he hopes to go hunting this fall in his home state and in Oklahoma, where his wife Janna grew up.

The vice presidential hopeful may not have as much time to hunt as he has in previous years, juggling his role as congressman and now vice presidential nominee, but soon he'll be able to mix a little work and pleasure. Ryan is expected to do an event with sportsmen in Columbus, Ohio this weekend.

I'm from WI and I'm pretty sure you can't take hunter's safety until you're 12.

Oneanddaone... Not all Democrats are bleeding heart liberals. I am a Democrat and I , as well as quite a few of my Democrat friends, own firearms. You seem to be confused on people's rights however. It is the mother's right to decide what to do with her body, and all things belonging to it, not some doctor... and certainly not on the "taxpayer's dime". Being a hunter is the last reason I wouldn't vote for these guys. Perhaps the way in which Democrats try to make sure everyone has basic human needs isn't the best way, but I don't hear the Republicans telling us what their way would be. They seem to be saying that it's not their problem. I'm sorry, but that is just not OK with me.

I love the hypocrites who bash hunting and hunters while they eat cheeseburgers and buy leather shoes.
Deer are the deadliest animal in North America so deer hunters actually save lives.
I guess since the lives they save are human the hypocrites don't care!

I laugh at the naysayers here. So far removed from the act that they think meat comes prepackaged in Styrofoam from the meat fairy at the local grocery stores. Sanitized wussies

Wow, this means he's a "real" man...

Maybe he can take Mitt out, who has been a hunter "pretty much my entire life" to go hunt some "varmints".

These posers are all so laughable.

    To Oneanddone

"I find it absolutely hilarious that all these libs are so offended about hunting and being so pro life for "bambie" yet they are ok with letting doctors go hunting for an unborn fetus in any situation and on taxpayers dime no less." Why are you assuming that everyone who opposes hunting is (1) a liberal and (2) supports a pro-choice platform? Way to generalize. Let me give it a try: I find it absolutely hilarious that all those "conservatives" are offended by pro-choice yet support the death penalty and oppose programs that take care of those unborn fetuses once they're delivered into the world.

The anti-hunting people posting here need to know where their food comes from. Most hunters eat what they kill. Hunting is a lot more humane than an animal living its life in a box waiting for the slaughterhouse. If not for hunting the animals would overpopulate and there wouldn't be enough food and they would kill each other. They would also venture into human habitat more than they already do and harm/kill humans or get killed by a car.

Good show Ryan!!! I've hunted all my life, it's good to get young people out in the wild and teach them to use guns. It's good for these young kids to see first hand the effects of a high-powered rifle, it gives them respect for guns. I was also in the Marine corp (viet nam). I encourage all parents to take there kid hunting.

Not Many deer hunters know about the virus epizootic hemorrhagic . Or if humans can get it or not . So far it has killed 4,000 deer in and around Indiana . How many other diseases can a deer carry ? Many people are injured every year from hunters shooting at what they thought was a deer !

My advice? Forget the gun crap. Buy her a Fender Telecaster guitar with a Fender Princeton Amp. Much more fun and a lot less dangerous. And she won't need an adult around.

I don't hunt becaue I don't like to eat gamey food. I'd rather have a lean angus burger any day of the week. I have nothing against hunting but find some extreme right-wingers think hunting is God's work and they are anointed. It just a silly sport like any other. Nothing more. So relax. Go hunting but shut up about it.

I think there is something wrong with anyone who finds killing fun. Killing to avoid starvation is one thing, but enjoying it is a whole different thing.

There is a difference between killing for "sport" and hunting for survival. Most hunt today for the pleasure of killing even if they eat the meat they kill. Killing should never be fun – time to go out with the kids and shoot things,
WHat a value system. He certainly isn't hunting for survival or the survival of his family.

10 yr old hunter. This is so much like those other recruits. You gotta get to them early to make them fanatics or aggressive. You gotta get to them early if you gotta teach them about peace and compassion and empathy too.

I was given my first shotgun when I was 12. A lot of the kids in my neighborhood were well armed, and a lot of them didn't live. It wasn't the brightest idea then, and I don't think it's a great idea now...

I have no problem with hunting. I'm a hunter. I'm also a democrat. Anyway, this looks more like using your family to rally the base. Yuck.

After reading these posts, I've come to a very common denominator among the pro-hunters....they are all still living in the past and refuse to evolve. I know in many parts of the country hunting is huge and I have relatives that used to hunt, but I just can't understand doing it for sport and just for the sake of killing a living thing. Unless you live out in no man's land and can't get to a grocery store, I see no need for type of "sport" in this day and age. What is even more mind boggling is most hunters are your self-proclaimed "pro-lifers".
