Ryan, Biden exchange words over entitlements

Columbus, Ohio (CNN) - With 12 days to go until the only debate between the vice presidential candidates, Rep. Paul Ryan and Joe Biden have stepped up their attacks about one another on the campaign trail.

After Biden made the charge that Mitt Romney’s economic plan could hit seniors with more taxes to their Social Security benefits, the next day Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee came to his running mate’s defense.

"Just down in Florida yesterday, Vice President Biden was making up all new falsehoods about Social Security and taxes. They’re trying to scare people for political gain. That’s unfortunately the kind of campaign that we’re seeing, as I said with a president without a record to run on,” Ryan said in Columbus.

The Democratic vice president was campaigning in Florida on Friday when he said, "The beneficiaries, who will be getting in the future, will be getting considerably less in Social Security payment.”

The Romney campaign rebutted Biden’s claims with a blog post on Friday, but Romney’s running mate responded directly to the attack at a campaign event on Saturday evening.

“Let me be very clear: There is only one person in this race threatening the health and retirement security programs of our seniors and that is President Obama,” said Ryan, before he leveled criticism directly at his upcoming debate opponent.

“In fact, Joe Biden himself voted to raise taxes on social security benefits, and as a senator, President Obama voted to keep those tax increases in place three times. I want to be very clear about this: Mitt Romney and I will never waver in our commitment to our seniors. Our plans actually save these programs,” he said.

The Romney campaign used the same argument in the blog post, pointing to Biden’s record when he was serving Delaware in the U.S. Senate and “voted for higher taxes on Social Security benefits for seniors making as little as $34,000 per year.”

Wisconsin native Ryan, who has served 14 years in the House of Representatives, reiterated the Romney-Ryan plan preserves entitlement programs.

“Our plans actually save these programs, they make no changes for people in or near retirement, they strengthen Medicare and Social Security for a generation,” Ryan said.

The vice presidential hopeful continued, “And shame on the politician who wants to use this issue to try and scare seniors when those of us who are out there trying to fix this problem for my generation and my kids’ generation and your kids.”

The Romney blog post assures that the Romney-Ryan plan to “preserve and strengthen Social Security does not raise taxes on anyone.”

They argue Obama’s plan “is to do nothing and simply wait for the exhaustion of the Social Security trust fund to happen. “

“The Social Security Trustees have concluded that doing nothing – the President’s plan – will mean that seniors will see their Social Security benefits cut by 25% in 2033.”

Thanks CNN for NOT doing your job of calling out politicians and for NOT taking on the role of professional journalism. Currently, you are competing with Fox and MSNBC to become an entertainment news channel with only people expressing their "experienced opinions" and NOT any one person simply reporting "facts" and calling on truth and lies between both the parties. CNN, you have failed in your role to play a responsible neutral media that could have educated the brainwashed american voters.

Let's see....That nasty President is going to make people pay for their Social Security and Medicare in the future, but good ol' Willard and Paulie are going to make sure everyone is taken care of (not to mention expanding the military and eliminating the deficit), and it won't cost a thing? And this all happens while we watch unicorn races, right?! I'm really sick and pissed off about being constantly insulted.

Hello, I have after carefully considering and reading several times the fact check reports on this enitilement issue concluded that Bidens comments are more correct than Ryans. It also is confirmed in my opinion when Ryan in para 7 above goes on to raise a spurious or unrelated past vote ( how did he vote?) matter thats related but has nothing to do with the current cost or not of entitlements of the current opposing presidential plans on this matter.
When someone said Ryan is really wonky for me he gets more wonky, less credible, or believable.... Fact checkers dont count only his ideology and wonky opinion.
On that statement alone I just cannot understand how anyone even a staunch Republican can vote for either of these guys. They dont care what people think especially in addition 47 % of us!!
If this nation votes Romney Ryan into power to be really safe and have no national security worries and better off i'll emigrate as if I stay as a middle class person under Romney Ryan I wont be able to afford health care, We'll end up in more useless and meaningless wars, spend what we cannort afford already (oi ve) on wars ( with Iran) which would change nothing and in fact make Israel less not more secure. it will be perceived by the whole muslim world as a war on the islamic religion and evoke Global jihad on a scale that I do not want to consider with 80 % directed against America and Israel.
Romney et all will set in motion the 2nd version of the crusades with Modern armies and weapons it will be WWIII.
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

Gov. Romney has advised us that he will balance the Federal budget but cutting spending and reducing taxes. Yet when asked what programs he is going to cut he doesn't identify them. He has repeatedly said that the budget needs to be cut. Come on tell us what you are going to cut.

  9. I'M JUST SAYING TOO...

Mr. Ryan, let me tell you a simple truth. You are not even in the same league as VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN!! I simply cannot wait for the debates!!!!!!!!!!! Our President does have a record to run on and it's a record of trying to fix all the mess left behind by people like you and Romney. Both of you talk alot about what President Obama and Vice President Biden should be doing, but America is still waiting to hear what EITHER ONE OF YOU would do differently!(except gut Medicare and give all the breaks to the 1%) All of this "on the camera" talk is window dressing and everyone knows it.What is really in both of your hearts was shown to us on that 47% video................

What happen to the Ryan who had the audacity to tackle the entitlement in his budgets, his methods of a voucher systems put a lots of senior in jeopardy, but at least it was what he believed in, so much so he fought tooth and nail to get it voted on and passed. Did all that conviction come to a halt the day you accepted the VP spot. What happen to your plan that you no longer believe in. Romney pick you for your plan he said he would signed in, but now said he has another plan, which neither you or him can give us details. You know I didn' always agreed with the old Ryan but at least I knew what he stood for, this new one has got me puzzle. Please don't tell me it all about politics

why do some self ascribed conservatives, as the ones at fox news, get mad at conservatives, who tell the truth about Romney? Does every body has to tell lies? So, let us tell the angry, mad people at Fox news "telling lies is not a criteria for being a conservative." True conservatives

Ryan had a detailed budget plan with details about his voucher systems. He fought tooth and nails untils it got voted on and pass. Romney said he would've signed it. He got pick for VP because of this plan, now you want us to believe that you no longer believe in your plan, you believe in Romney plan which he or you is able to give any details of. What are we to believe, either you have no conviction or The VP position was to much to pass by. I guess it all politics.

Social Security is always paid into annually, by millions of people working .. it will not run out. Medicare is paid for by the consumers of Medicare .. it will not run out. The Republican leaders just don't want to leave them alone. Vouchers will do nothing to help, but will hinder those that are fifty and under, that will get the two very important programs in their future .. I don't think they want vouchers to go find another insurance company that may or may not charge them more than the vouchers are worth ... we all know how insurance companies are.

I don't hear any of these law makers offering to lead by example. Pay them a fair wage for their hours worked...and NO MORE! Place them on the same retirement and health care plan that American citizens must live with. No more automatic raises without EARNING them. If we must pay them as if they are "the best of the best", we deserve "the best of the best"!
I doubt any of the moderators of the "great debates" will have the stones to bring this topic up.

It's pathetic to see Americans voting to keep the "bad guy's" out....instead of voting to put the best guy's in. What happened to ...of the people...? To "serve?" today, you must be a doctor, lawyer, or wealthy elite? Instead of $$$ running our choices, we should get their job app, a resume with references, and maybe a website listing resources to check their records. That's all an employer gets before he makes his choices.

I find Ryan to be far more truthful and open, than Obama or the Democratic Party in general.

I trust those who are truthful and open. I do not trust those who lie and do devious things.

I think we can trust Lyin Ryan about as much as Bagdad Bob. The author of vouchers for seniors, the elimination of women's rights, and the congressman who voted for every war and unfunded mandate of Bush, is not credible.
