Paul Ryan: Pressure is on for VP debate

(CNN) - Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan said Monday that Mitt Romney's widely-applauded debate performance upped the ante for Ryan's own showdown this week.

"He raised the bar quite high, that's for sure. Mitt definitely put the pressure on from that perspective," Ryan said on Detroit radio station WJR, just days before his match-up against Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday.

A new Gallup poll released Monday indicates Romney experienced a post-debate bounce after last week's event in Denver, and other surveys, including a CNN/ORC International poll, showed debate watchers considered Romney the clear winner.

On Sunday, a number of campaign advisers and surrogates conceded President Barack Obama did not meet expectations and signaled the campaign may make "adjustments," using Biden on Thursday as the first attempt to come back.

But multiple Democratic sources told CNN the campaign does not expect Biden to make up for the president's showing in the first presidential debate.

The two vice presidential running mates will face off in their first and only debate at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Ryan, repeating a line he used this weekend in a separate interview, said he expects the vice president to launch at him "like a cannon ball."

"Because they had such a bad debate, Joe Biden is just going to come flying at us," Ryan said. "It seems pretty clear that their new strategy is just basically to call us liars, to descend down into a mud pit, and hopefully with enough mudslinging back and forth–and distortion–people get demoralized and they can win by default."

The Wisconsin congressman was referring to the Obama campaign's post-debate argument, which used television ads, stump speeches and interview shows to make the case that Romney was dishonest during the first debate, namely on Romney's tax plan. Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod on Sunday phrased Romney's performance as unchecked "brazenness."

"That's something we're going to have to make an adjustment for in these subsequent debates," Axelrod added on CBS.

Playing the expectations game, Ryan continued to raise the bar for Biden, reminding listeners that the former 36-year senator has decades of experience.

"He's been on this national stage more than anyone else in politics," Ryan said, further describing Biden as "gifted," "extremely experienced" and a "proven debater."

But he said Biden has one big problem to overcome.

"He has to defend Barack Obama's record and it's not a very good record to defend," Ryan said.

When you listen to Ryan he wraps up policy like a neat little Xmas package as if it's that simple and that is due to his lack of experience and knowledge. When I listen to Ryan, he sounds more like he's applying for a job as Santa Claus and voters are children, he's a joke.

I look forward to hearing Joe's inevitable screw up. It'll be ultimately harmless, as the President's lackluster performance did all the damage already, but it will be memorable.

All I know is I'll be glad when all the debates are over and we can vote. This election cycle has been going on for 4 years. Maybe if we re-elect President Obama the Rep. led Congress will have no choice but to get to work since their goal of making him a "One Term President" will be over. Let's hope... Obama/Biden 2012

I actually feel a little bit sorry that Obama has to look to the VP buffoon for momentum after his own miserable showing.

    Bwahahahahahahaha... no, I really dont.

Rand preached that true virtue is attained only through greed: no charity, no help being extended through others. When Ryan talks about individualism and freedom, he is seeing it through the eyes of a Russian atheist emigree who talked about freedom from government oppression while living off of her husband's social security. In other words, another foundational lie from the Romney/Ryan camp that does not have a shred of reality from the American experience.

I had no idea about his Ayn Rand stuff, but the first time I laid my eyes on Ryan a couple years ago, I get the feeling he is a demon. I mentioned it in one of my comments here...wish I could find it. There is something about him .....someone said Eddie Munster, but it is more than that....deceitful and lies. Plus his mouth seems like a toothless granny.

For pure entertainment, this should be the most interesting V.P. debate in many years. There was a lot of interest in the last one, but it really got kind of boring as Biden was careful not to do a "smackdown" on Palin and be perceived as a bully. This time all bets are off......I am fully expecting full "smackdown" mode. And it will be Biden doing the smacking.

Well if the shoe fits, you've got to wear it. When you come out every day and lie to the American people about your budget plan, about privatizing social security, about vouchers to buy senior health care, and then back away from your statements or outright lie when you think the audience would not be receptive to your extreme ideas – that is lying!

Funny but the author of the study that Obama uses to claim that Romney is lying about his tax plan says that Obama is misusing and doesn't understand the study results. It seems that Obama is lying about Romney lying! The Biden/Ryan debate should be fantastic. Biden will have dug himself into a hole within the first five minutes of the debate!

The "mudpit is for those who cannot debate the issues and come to a conclusion. BTW..... just because Romney or Ryan comes to a different conclusion, doesnt mean they are slinging mud. Identifying problems, then offering their solutions is what debates are about. Calling names such as many pundits did last Wednesday night is mudslinging. I kinda thought the President and Romney did a good job at being civil....conversely I thought the media failed in that regard!

"Mr. VP, I think you were right when you said your were deadly earnest about the middle class having been buried in the last 3 years."

"Mr. VP, what was the nature of Ambassador Stevens' mission when he was murdered? Why aren't FBI agents allowed into the murder scene?"

"I believe Obama and Holder didn't know about F&F. Why did he evoke exec privilege then?"

"When you were caught copying Neil Kinnock's speech almost word for word, was that a form of lying?"

"You do know that if nothing is done, in 20 years, 100% of government revenue will go towards interest on the national debt."

"With gas prices at an all time high in CA, is that what the Prez meant when he said energy costs would have to 'necessarily skyrocket?'"

"With regards to Romney's returns, are you calling him a criminal?"

"Mitt's sorry about the 47% but has given millions to charities. As a percentage of income, how much have you given?"

"If you are reducing Medicare reimbursement to physicians, how will that help seniors?"

By the sound of some of these post, I think there are a few folks (Dems) that are still burning hot over the first debate.
Lets hope Biden can keep his heart rate down or he might just make this his last debate. Maybe sitting at the kitchen table and stopping by the cafe (that closed years ago) everyday on the way to work to sit with his peps and talk big Gov. will relax him so he don't blow a vessel. Ryan is gonna smoke this old screamer, Obama attack dog. May I call you

jrzydvl – While I agree with you about the importance of increasing the job base, I disagree about how to do it.

If lower taxes would have created more jobs and decrease the deficit (and debt), the period between 2000-now should have outstanding and budget should have great. Instead, GW Bush pushed the debt even higher despite the good economic times of much of his presidency. Out tax burden is at a historically low rate, we should be doing really well now also.

Sorry, taxes need to go up on those that are just banking it, and that money needs to be spent in the economy.

What you're describing is trickle down economics...and it didn't work.
DDW. are so wrong. Debts are never eliminated by raising taxes. The only way toreduce the 5 T Obama has rung up is to increase the base by increasing jobs. More revenue thru more people working.

1988 was my first election and so I remember Joe Biden well from that campaign and its amazed me that the man is still out there with the nerve to show his face on stage. has everyone forgotten why he stepped down in that race? He was caught plagiarizing from other politicians speeches! It's one thing to borrow ideas from others and give them credit and incorporate their plans into your own. But to outright steal people's thoughts, present them s your own, and be so totally outed that you have to leave a primary race in disgrace ought to make one embarrassed to come back and claim the public should vote for you as their leader! the man has no morals OR shame! true my candidate lost the presidential race that year – but at least Dukakis wasn't outed for stealing from his colleagues!

I am from Wisconsin and I would have thought the Ryan's parents would have taught their son that one should not take the truth and spin it into something that fits his selfserving needs. Ryan you are nothing but GD liar, your own church has told you that you have put your own incorrect meaning to their teachings.
