Romney knew ex-SEAL slain in Benghazi

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Mitt Romney knew one of the former Navy SEALs killed in this year's Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, he told an Iowa audience Tuesday.

The GOP presidential nominee choked up as he described meeting the man his campaign confirmed was Glen Doherty, who was killed in the Libya attack.

"We had a lot of things in common," Romney said of Doherty, recalling the two had skied at some of the same places, and that when they met Doherty had discussed his care and concern for people he had met working in the Middle East. "You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALs killed in Benghazi on Sept. 11th."

Romney only recently learned for certain that Doherty was the same man he had met at a party in La Jolla, California, a campaign spokesman said.

Reminiscing on a windy Tuesday in Iowa, Romney cited reports on CNN International that Doherty had left a safe location to rush to the aid of the consulate under attack last month.

"They didn't hunker down where they were in safety – they rushed there to go help," Romney said, tying that spirit to his candidacy. "This is the American way – we go where there's trouble. We go where we're needed. And right now we're needed."

The two men met under unlikely – and humorous – circumstances, Romney said. Several years ago he and his wife Ann headed out for a neighborhood party but did not confirm the address on their invitation.

"We went over, knocked on the door, they let us in 'good to see you' when we came in," Romney said. "We had dinner together and got our pictures with everyone."

"Turns out, this wasn't the neighborhood party," he continued, to laughter from the audience. "This was a family having a party with their friends all right?"

"Romney expresses concern over a man he knew that had died in Benghazi."

He did? Sounded more like name dropping to me ... and not in a good way. Then again, nothing good ever comes out of Mitt Romney's mouth, including the cry me a river tears. Wonder how long he had to practice before he got it just right?

@The Real Tom Paine responding to borderline nuts:

How the hell do you know that he expressed no concern? Just because he did not go out and stage a bit of grief for the cameras? What a sick SOB you are. As far as being a drooling supporter, you've lashed yourself to a man who is a pathological liar: McCain passed him over for Palin, for God's sake.
Don't let the Border Patrol at Tin Foil country get to you Tom Paine.
I would go as far as to say to stop giving them free press by engaging them directly. That's all they come here for, after all, to see their name in "LIGHTS".
I say "lights out" to these nuts. Anything you have to say can be said without using their name in your response.

and you jerks are the green state run by dems lucky u not!!!!! hows your unemp #s??
Better than your state, more likely than not. CA had GOP governors for most of the last 3 decades, until they decided to build fences instead of roads and bridges. The pollution comes from wonderful places that the GOp wants to send you job to, where you get huge profits for a few, filth and waste for the rest of us.

Romney knows a lot of people who he admires and has genuine concern for.

Compare that to Obama who throws ppl under the bus who don't fit his campaign narrative ( Rev.Wright, Van Jones, etc.)

Romney is a liar, a plastic candidate with many faces, we will never know who the real Mitt Romney is. Probably CNN knows who this man is because this channel talks beautiful things about him 24/7.

    Romney is simply a bully
Forced the closure of few companies to make big money
Now he talks about world dominance
Just plain arrogance and mere ignorance
    Talks highly of his faith
But he is just a reprobate
    Nations must compromise for Peace
We do not want America as the Police

Ok Mitts sinking to a new low. You were such good friends with the guy you justfound out it was him that was killed. Sure they had a lot in common. Mitt with his $250,000,000 and an ex armed services member. This is a real pathetic attempt by Mitt.

Actually, if Romney had been in that bunker, he would have sent someone else out, then taken credit for delegating while under fire. What an ambulance-chaser.

Surely people have not forgooten what he said about the 47 percent that do not pay taxes. This is who Mitt Romany really is. Poor performance and I can do without having a used car salesman for President. By the way I am not in the 47%. I pay taxes a lot because I am single with no dependents and have a relatively high income. This is who Mitt Romney is. This is not a gaffe this is whathe reallt thinks. He said nothing in the debate. No Obama did not for44 his best but even more scary is having an over gron frat boy for vice president.

Wow. It took him almost two weeks to remember he knew this guy. If they were such close associates why didn't Willard say something personal about him the day it was announced?

You libs are so sad and bitter. Romney grieves for a friend killed defending the US Ambassador to Libya and all you can do is insult him. How pathetic, how ignorant how vile.

  20. ThinkAgain: Hey, networks, fact-check the debates in real-time and put it in the crawl!

This story doesn't change the FACT that Mittens spoke about the Libyan attack before he had all the information. Nothing changes the FACT that Mittens is a hot-headed flip-flopper, willing to say and do anything in his desperate attempt to be POTUS.

Who goes to a party, sits down to dinner and takes pictures with a group of people they don't know? What about the person who invited them to this party – weren't they surprised that they didn't see that individual there? We're really supposed to believe this? Remember when Hilliary had to run from the helicopter because of all the gunfire? I think Mitt's trying to show just a little too much of his "human side" LOL
