Romney knew ex-SEAL slain in Benghazi

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Mitt Romney knew one of the former Navy SEALs killed in this year's Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, he told an Iowa audience Tuesday.

The GOP presidential nominee choked up as he described meeting the man his campaign confirmed was Glen Doherty, who was killed in the Libya attack.

"We had a lot of things in common," Romney said of Doherty, recalling the two had skied at some of the same places, and that when they met Doherty had discussed his care and concern for people he had met working in the Middle East. "You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALs killed in Benghazi on Sept. 11th."

Romney only recently learned for certain that Doherty was the same man he had met at a party in La Jolla, California, a campaign spokesman said.

Reminiscing on a windy Tuesday in Iowa, Romney cited reports on CNN International that Doherty had left a safe location to rush to the aid of the consulate under attack last month.

"They didn't hunker down where they were in safety – they rushed there to go help," Romney said, tying that spirit to his candidacy. "This is the American way – we go where there's trouble. We go where we're needed. And right now we're needed."

The two men met under unlikely – and humorous – circumstances, Romney said. Several years ago he and his wife Ann headed out for a neighborhood party but did not confirm the address on their invitation.

"We went over, knocked on the door, they let us in 'good to see you' when we came in," Romney said. "We had dinner together and got our pictures with everyone."

"Turns out, this wasn't the neighborhood party," he continued, to laughter from the audience. "This was a family having a party with their friends all right?"

Romney can fake anything. New he is faking tears. Spare me the fake tears. I find it troubling that the only specific thing that Romney's has identified in his plan to cut the deficit and not allow insurance companies to deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions is to cut funding for Big Bird with just 28 days out from Election Day. Right now, you've got a federal deficit, federal debt that's over 16 trillion dollars and Romney’s plan to fix it in a responsible and balanced way is to cut funding for Big Bird. These idio&s have no idea how to bring the deficit in line in a responsible manner or create jobs.

It doesn’t matter how Romney and the Republican try to spin their policies, the American people know how disastrous those policies have been for this country, especially for the Middle Class and less fortunate.

Americans are not stupid. How can anyone even thing Romney’s policies will be better for this country. Romney and the Republicans policies from 2001 to 2008 brought this great nation to its knees, their policies caused the Great Recession, their policies wiped out almost 10,000,000 jobs as a direct result of the Great Recession, their policies wiped out retirement savings for tens of millions of Americans as a direct result to the Great Recession, their policies took a $1 trillion surplus to a $13 trillion deficit, their policies resulted in the decline in the percentage of Americans that are in the middle class, their policies resulted in tens of millions of Americans without healthcare, their policies resulted in millions of Americans losing their homes, their policies will be detrimental to Latinos and all other minorities, their policies will result in another war in the Middle East, and the list goes on.

No Americans in their right mind will believe that Romney/Ryan policies will be better for the Economy. The only way for anyone to think that is if they are suffering from total amnesia. People will remember what happened in 2007/2008 and the years leading up to the Great Recession. It was the exact same policies that Romney is advocating now that caused the Great Recession. We are not that dumb to think that these same policies that caused the Great Recession will somehow magically make the economy better.

I guess Romney/Ryan think we are all stupid and don’t know the truth and can’t remember the dark days of the great recession of 2007 and 2008 and the years leading up to it.

The choice is clear. Do we want to go back to the exact same policies (Romney/Ryan current policies) that brought America (this great Nation) to its knees or do we want to continue to build on the recovery.

He "knew" him? But he didn't know until just now that he was the guy that he "knew"? Sure smacks of someone using the death of one of our heroes for political gain. Either he knew him or he didn't (having met someone one time is not "knowing" him). If he knew him, he would have commented on that at the time the news first came out.......not now, not at a political rally. Pretty low Mitt.......right down there with "My father walked with M L King".........

Give it a rest Mr. Romney, anyone who has to work this hard to prove they are a good person probably isn't.

This man is shameless. Well Willard, you knew your father as well. I see you didn't follow his advice about releasing taxes.

What drama ! He is trying to woo the votes on every possible way he can. What a fake!!! If he knew the ex-Seal, he should have said something about him when the news first came out.

What's the next gimmick from Romney?????

Romney knew the SEAL slain in Libya, like I know the bat that flies around my backyard at night.

This is so pathetically stupid to use tragedy and death for a disingenuous attempt at political gain. Romney is an immoral liar...perfect leader for the GOP...but as shown by 2000-2008, it is a recipe for disaster for the country.

He didn't say he knew him – that's the headline that CNN put there.

Just a casual acqaintance being used for political gain. This is in poor taste, IMO. It gives the implication that Glen Doherty supported Romney and even if he did, public servants generally do not state who they back.

You guys are right, there's no way Romney could have known him. I mean, Obama went to a church with a racist pastor for years and he didn't know him, right. Briliant logic libs!

He Knew him..... and it took this long to remember it......... and say something.......... Oh wait that's how long it took him to make a cover story and lay the story out...

CNN– Romney did say he KNEW the Navy Seal Doherty, he said he MET him at the Christmas party they accidentally crashed. Your headline & the way you have written the story is misleading - especially for those who don't watch the video itself (see, for example California Gary who is questioning Romney's sincerity by parsing the word "knew"). Should I even give CNN the benefit of the doubt that it used a word Romney did *not* use by accident?

Strange that Romney would wait almost month later, and then say this during a campaign speech.
Makes it seem political. He should have made issued a statement of condolence soon after the man was killed.
Instead he was busy attacking U.S. embassy personnel in Egypt, while the Embassy was under attack.
He attacked there free speech right to criticize the anti-Muslim method.

    October 9, 2012 03:13 pm at 3:13 pm |

Romney is shameful! Disgusting to make up a story about someone who died in service!

Their are countless amounts of Americans whove lost loved ones in battle, yet you insist on never ending war. Where's your weeping heart for US?!?!

They had a lot in common except the fact that the Seal actually served his country, and Romney ran off to France when he had a chance to serve.

Typical Romney slant. Reminds me of the story about Romney leading the charge to cut a classmate's hair. If Romney then could do something like that and have followers, he can fool people now by pretending to care about someone just to get votes.

To these hypocrites who try to mock Romney, I bet you're so tough that not even the murder of your mother would face you, good for you. Just because you love an inept and lazy president, e.g. Obama, doesn't mean that all people are like that. Obama couldn't care less if his brothers suffer, go check where and what his brothers are doing. But alas, Romney is a bad man because he cared for a friend? You guys are just useless pieces of sh@#$@#^

Mittens: "This is the American way – we go where there's trouble. We go where we're needed."
Right! That's why you hid in Paris for the duration of the Vietnam War. What a surprise—just another right-wing
draft-dodging chickenhawk. That's just what we need.

Can he choke up about the 4,488 Americans killed in Iraq and the over 2,000 that have died in Afghanistan or the hundreds of thousand who have been wounded and come home with PTSD? No, he will cry tears for a man killed as part of the raid on our embassy because he and his cynical handlers think that will woo him a couple of votes, a day after he give a chickenhawk saber rattling political campaign speech in which he indicated that he is willing to send more Americans (but not his own dear ones) overseas to fight to secure the right of venture capitalists and hedge fund managers to enjoy the freedom to lobby for tax breaks, while others pick up the tab. When I see the little flag pins on the lapels of guys like this it makes me want to heave.

Our military HATES Obama ... who:
    * returns combatants to the battle field to kill our soldiers
    * leaks information and withdraw dates to our enemies
    * is making huge cutbacks on our military spending
    * orders our embassy guards to use unloaded weapons
    * uses and exploits our soldiers for political photo ops
    * doesn't allow our soldiers to fight to WIN
    * apologizes to our enemies
    * holds back absentee ballots to our soldiers
