(CNN) - Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, a longtime friend of President Barack Obama, said Tuesday the president was "surprised" in last week's debate against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
"He was shocked and surprised, many of us were. Mitt Romney came on that set at the first debate and said things which completely contradicted what he'd said in the campaign before. I think it caught the president a little bit by surprise. He won't be surprised again," Durbin said on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien."
I think his first name defines him better than anything else.
I was shocked, too, until I remembered that Mittens fits Karl Rove's requirement to have a candidate with daddy issues and a willingness to be a puppet. Mittens also fits Grover Norquist's requirement to be a "set of working digits" to sign whatever legislation is put in front of him by Norquist, the Koch brothers, and the multinational corporations intent on taking over our country and privatizing everything.
Mittens is a person without a core, who some folks think won a debate against President Obama simply because he was hyped up and willing to lie through his teeth.
You Mittens supporters are pathetic, not only in your ignorance, but in your willingness to consider a man of such low character as Mittens to be qualified to be the leader of the free world.
Obama/Biden 2012 = The only sane choice

Give it a rest. I have been following Mitt Romney for years and what he said in the debate was exactly consistent with what he has said all along. However, since Obama has no idea about the methods and ideas Mitt Romney uses, of course he interprets them incorrectly. If Obama was surprised, that says what a lousy job David Axelrod is doing as Obama's Political Adviser.
Let Faux King Mitt have his fun strutting around oro a few days. His handlers better make sure he has a nice blue asbestos suit for the next debate, because the heat will be on him, whichever Romney he decides to be that night.
The only suprise was you saw the real Obammy getting whooped. cant wait til he is gone
Romney made a 180 degrees turn on debate night on about every policy issue he was for the night before. It surprised just about any supporter of the president. if one has any brain it is easy to see what Romeny is made of and how low he can stoop to get elected. Unfortunately for the president even the media and the talking heads now think the bully Romney has done a good job at the debate. But he is nothing but a pandering flip-flopper who makes all the promises to get votes and dump those who voted for him later.
no doubt they were surprised. Mr. Romney had his debate answers down pat and did not deviate from them. He looked very smooth and probably impressed many people. However, he tweaked his ideas to make them more appealing to more people. He has slowly turned toward the center. So exactly which plan will Mr. Romney follow?
Remember that a President does not have the time to be prepped for everything he does. How many times will Mr. Romney have private meetings where he will speak as he did about the 47%? That is the real Mr. Romney speaking and those who believe his excuse are being fooled. Ask those who live int eh western part of MA?
Have heard that some people think he was a good governor for MA. That would be hard to prove since he really only served two years. He began running for President his third year. He used that job as a stepping stone to the Presidency. He felt that his success at the Olympics(there is more to that than meets the eye) would move him into the MA governorship and lead to a run for the Presidency. His Lt. Governor Kerry Healey did yeoman's work for him. She made him look good so long as you did not scratch the surface and discover who was running the state. In the end Lt. Gov. Healey ran for governor and lost. She was, of course, tied to his record. Those of us who lived in MA can tell you that he does not keep his focus on the job. Do you trust Rep. Ryan to do any of the job. Mr. Ryan is much more conservative and much more focused. Guess who will win out on policy decision.
Romney changes far too much.
No because Romney will just lie some more. SMH
Part of the flop for Obama is that he has never had anybody speak up about the problems in our nation and the world. Obama has had too many people handle him with kid gloves. Sorry but in the position of president Obama has to learn to take the truth. Obama has had too many women in his life telling him what a good little boy he is. If Obama wants respect he must also give it. As it is Obama thinks of himself as the god of the world, which he is not. Also Obama is a puppet and does not even know it.
I am and will always be an Obama supporter but it seems to me that if I (and many others) could see that Mitt Romney lies and changes his position to whatever is most popular at the time, President Obama should have expected Multiple Personality Mitt that night. I get that he is very busy running the country and that all Romney has to do is practice and campaign. But I hope for a few things between now and Nov 6th. 1. The President stops worrying about being seen as the "Angry Black Man". (He should be angry for our sakes and his.) 2. The campaign adds need to get very serious and focused. (Stop it with the Big Bird nonsense.) 3. He needs to be really ready for the next debate. 4. Supporters of the President need to ignore the polls and media, not get discouraged and show up to VOTE...
Our president, leader of the free world, Commander in Chief of our armed forces, is so weak that if you say something he isn't expecting he will crumble. That's the message to take away from this. Does that mean he's not particularly intelligent or just pathetically weak? I think it's a bit of both.
Romney/Ryan 2012
Let's talk a moment about inconsistencies of Obama:
Closing GITMO–flipflop
Most transparent administration in history–flipflop
Will not raise taxes on middle class–flipflop
Will close the revolving door for lobbyists–flipflop
Will work across the aisle to produce bipartisan results–flipflop
I can go on, but I get bored listing all his fails.

"He should be angry for our sakes and his".... Well said!!
Your post expresses my sentiments exactly .
Thank you.
Fact
Romney changes far too much.

The only thing that changed during the debate is that Mitt Romney debunked the unfounded personal attacks that have been the basis of Obama/ Biden 2012's strategy. It was predictable that this is when Obama's strategy would cave in.

Mine, too. I'm sick to death of Romney getting away with lie after lie and then spending the next few weeks listening to the media explain to me that he really wasn't "lying" ... he's just changing positions.
Four & door
Give it a rest. I have been following Mitt Romney for years and what he said in the debate was exactly consistent with what he has said all along.
-------------
Romney has said he will rid regulations.....Debate night- he like regulations
In Wisconsin, rallying after the Scott Walker win, he dissed fire fighters, police officers & teachers...Debate night- flipped
He repeatedly, (and there is audio/video evidence for all these flip flops), said get rid of OBAMACARE in it's ENTIRETY.
Debate night- He loved pre-existing conditions.
Clearly, you seem as vague and dishonest as MITT. You know all this is true. But of course you will vote for a panda bear before you vote for Barack Hussein Obama.
They need to stop spinning the President's failure to launch last Thursday. They are starting to sound like the Repugnicants.
I'm sure the President has more than enough reasons to be pissed off. God knows he's been pissed on by the GOP.
He needs to give as good as he gets. We know he's classy, he needs to be more brassy.
Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!
Obama 2012.
Romney was lying all through the debate and flip flop.
Obama need to bring the true out of Romney in next debate.
Romney hate 47% of american
Romney said they same things that he has been saying on the Trail. Quit with the excuses. Have some accountability. Obama is addicted to the Teleprompter! He can't function with out it. He needs his pre written and rehearsed speeches. He practiced w/ John Kerry for a week. Lame excuses as always. What will be his excuse on the next debate?
Lynda/ Minnesota do you feel as I do that there is just nothing left to see here?
I'm ready to vote. NOW.
.....Well, nothing except seeing the President go the hell off on Romney!
So maybe there is something left to see here after all! LOL!
Obama 2012.
I can remember the expression on one of the Republican challengers faces when he asked Romney a question about health care in Mass and he could not believed Romney responses was just an outright lie. He stood there in amazement and repeated it over and over. It was like a golfer watching the opponent nudge the ball closer and closer to the hole and then call it a hole in one.
Romney supporters know you can shade a lie just as well as shading the facts and still have people convinced. Just look at the commentors on these posts.
"Clearly, you seem as vague and dishonest as MITT."
Four wouldn't know the truth if it smacked him head on.
Babyboomer, Dominican Mama 4 Ogama, Lynda/Minnesota:
Agreed 100%. And most importantly, let's not be fickle because of one bad night on the President's part. We must be steady, strong, non-complacent, and VOTE!!. As is all too evident, Willard will say or do anything to win the Presidency. The man lies with no compunction – it's sickening.
OBAMA/BIDEN/FIRST LADY MICHELLE 2012!!!!
