(CNN) - Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who embodied a dying breed of liberal Republicanism switching to the Democratic Party at the twilight of his political career, died after a lengthy battle with cancer, his family announced Sunday.
Specter died of complications from non-Hodgkins Lymphoma on Sunday morning at his home in Philadelphia, his family said. He was 82.

A damn shame. Sure, he was a career politician, and sometimes did things for his pollitical survival. But I always got the feeling that deep down he was genuinely trying to bring some sense and cordiality back to this country. We need more like him, and we will feel his loss.
Awesome polictal man. Not afraid to do what was right regardless of the party line
The GOP, once a proud party of principled statesmen such as Dwight Eisenhower, Colin Powell, Richard Lugar, and Arlen Specter, has collapsed into a boiling cauldron of nasty, angry, extremist, racist, hateful, selfish, obstructive, arrogant, anti-science, violent, fraudulent, power-hungry Islamist-like ignoramuses. Other than that, some of them are pretty nice people.
Say what you want about his politics, he was a good man.
That is unfortunate.
RIP
Spector was perhaps most known for his "single-bullet theory" used by the Warren Commission to conclude that Oswald acted alone in the JFK assassination.
Mr. Specter was indeed the last of a dying breed. The GOP once produced men like Everett Dirksen, Gerald Ford, George Bush Sr., and Howard Baker. It now sends men to Congress who believe that the earth is 6,000 years old and that raped women can't get pregnant.
That is sad news. I just heard this today. I'm very sorry to hear, and may God bless.
Very very sad i mein we lost good person,
R I P Sen. Specter
Specter was a republican that believed bi-partisan cooperation was the proper way, not holding the American public hostage to further a hidden agenda. He may be one of the last of the real Moderates of the GOP, which has been conquered by the fanatical extremists, commonly known as neo-cons.
Rest in Peace Senator Spector. A good man.
too bad what he will be remembered for is being a turncoat that was the deciding vote to inflict obamacare on this country.
Rest in peace, Mr. Specter. Rest in peace.
