Actresses call out Romney on abortion in new ad

(CNN) – Hollywood actresses Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington are featured condemning Republicans for their stance on abortion in a new political ad from the liberal group

The spot, released Monday and directed by noted filmmaker Rob Reiner, will air nationally and in the battleground states of Colorado and Virginia, the group said, adding it would air during shows primarily viewed by women.

"I want to talk to you about women," Johansson says at the beginning of the spot, followed by Washington saying, "And about Mitt Romney."

"Mitt Romney is for ending funding to Planned Parenthood," Longoria says, with Johansson chiming in, "Including cancer screenings."

The ad continues:

Washington: "He said he'd overturn Roe v. Wade."

Johansson: "We have Republicans trying to redefine rape."

Longoria: "Trying to force women to undergo invasive ultrasounds."

Johansson: "If you think that this election won't affect you and your life, think again."

Washington: "Vote."

Longoria: "Vote."

Johansson: "Vote for Barack Obama."

In a statement, Reiner said Romney, and his running mate Paul Ryan, would "eviscerate women's rights" if they're elected in November.

"We'd be talking about getting rid of abortion, birth control, access to health care screenings. As a husband, son and father, I can't stand by and let this happen," Reiner continued.

"Misleading political attacks will not change President Obama's failed record," Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg wrote in response to the ad. "His policies have made it harder for women across the country to start businesses, get good jobs, or see their children able to go to college and get started with their lives. Mitt Romney will lead us to a real recovery so that women – and all Americans – can succeed and live the American Dream."

Last week, Democrats pounced on Romney after he said in an interview with the Des Moines Register that he was not aware of any abortion legislation he would promote as part of his agenda as president.

Democrats claimed that was a reversal for the candidate, who maintained during the GOP primary season that he would support efforts to remove funding for Planned Parenthood, a women's health group that provides abortion services. Several House Republicans have introduced legislation that would strip funding from the group.

Romney reiterated that pledge later in the week, and on Sunday a top adviser to Romney's campaign said the GOP nominee was a "pro-life candidate" and would serve as a "pro-life president."

Ed Gillespie, speaking to CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley on "State of the Union," said that was a long-standing position for the Republican candidate.

"What the governor has consistently said is that he thinks Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and this is something that should be left to elected representatives, to the people through their elected representatives," Gillespie said, referring to the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision affirming a woman's right to have an abortion.

OK, get rid of Planned Parenthood and watch the abortion rate go up (whether it is legal or not), due to Unplanned Parenthood!

judith - It's all about choice people
Yes, most women who get abortions CHOOSE to have sex, most women who get abortions CHOOSE to have UNPROTECTED SEX, most women who get abortions CHOOSE to not use widely available cheap or free birth control. So most women who get abortions CHOOSE to act irresponsibility THREE TIMES and then want the additional "choice" to kill another person as a "choice" of last resort. Sorry, but you should not get to kill another human being because of your irresponsible "choices".

I think it's just marvelous that these brave women are standing up for what the large majority of American women want. Standing up to some of you vile people takes courage, considering that your brain-dead peanutheads go around shooting poeple - like doctors!!!– that don't agree with you. That piece of good inside MY BODY which you get away with calling a "baby" is no more a baby than that steak in my freezer. Take that microscopic glob of my tissue out and it's dead in half a second. Don't start glory-hallelujah-ing me - that crap won't wash. Stay outta my body - stay away from my rights!! As if anything you lowlifes say would actually STOP women from getting abortions - it never has.

More rich Hollywood types trying to tell America what to do. I also don't understand their logic. If they have obamacare, then all of these tests and procedures should be covered. So why fund planned parenthood? I thought Obama was going to "save" money by eliminating duplication and wasteful spending in the health care industry..

Romney has to be called out by women for what he is,a pathelogical liar.As a Mormon bishop he was known for intimidating pregnant single women threatening excommunication from the church if they didn't give him their newborns to give to conventional parents, one of each gender. He's not for gay, single parents stating they're irresponsible, incompetent in having, raising children..Do you want a president that determines who can, can't have children, you want another China,I don't!!

When does Willard realize he is a flip flopper. he said he was pro-choice when he ran as governor candidate in Massachusetts a very blue state. He said he was pro-choice because his own cousin had had an abortion. Why the flip flops. I see a pattern here. Maybe because he is a mormon cult follower. Mormons have flip flopped 1890, 1978, 2011 and I am more sure there are more events like that in its history.

Do you pro choice people have any idea how dangerous abortion is??? It can cause scarring, PTSD, depression and so much more. Why are you advocating something that HURTS women?!?!? I became pregnant unexpectedly and didn't want to keep my baby, but just thinking about all the pain I would go through in the future...the pain of regret, the pain of killing my own child....all this made me keep my baby. And I'm glad I did because I am the happiest MOTHER in the world....

And it was your choice to do so – your body, your choice. That being said, you have no right to make that choice for anyone else.

I am a Republican woman and I am pro-life all the way. The only way a woman should have a legal abortion is from rape, incest or the life of herself. If more women/teen girls would not use abortion as birth control we would not have this problem. So, you see its not only old wealthy white men. Just remember, if your mother would have had an abortion with you--you would not be here to start with. Just a thought........

“Mitt Romney wants to take away women’s control of their own bodies,” said creative director Laura Dawn..."

life is a seamless experience of continual evolution that begins at conception and continues until interrupted by natural death either through accident, sickness or old age. the exception occurs when it is interrupted by direct premeditated human intervention. in this case in almost all instances it is classified in civil societies as murder and punished accordingly.

abortion of a human fetus falls into this latter category of murder. it is a crime uniquely instigated and executed by women, most often for their own convenience and runs counter to all civilized concepts of maternal responsibility. experiencing the cognitive dissonance caused by this conundrum is the primary reason for the hysterical reaction against its recognition and the implausible attempt at justification by such meaningless arguments as "women’s right to privacy". abortion has nothing to do with privacy. it’s murder pure and simple and those who commit it are murderesses period. Republicans are on the wrong side of most issues. They spend more than Dems. They go to war for no reason. They increase the deficit. Give tax breaks to people that are already wealthy while cutting benefits for poor and middle class. They are against science and advancement. They are for small government unless they are the ones running the show. Simply put, you have to be nuts to vote Republican. Just about the only thing they run on is "morals and values", yet they lie like a pathological liar.

A typical flip flop Romney Ryan on social issues like abortion. How can these GOPs be trusted- just lies, lies, lies. All women concerned about their bodies should stand up and fight for our rights- vote Obama and dump Romney and Ryan the, typical liars. America, do not trust Romney- he is fake. he only favors the rich like him. remember when he saud- I dont care for the poor- Give tax breaks to corporations= after all he said, corporations are people, my freind!

Romney is a good actor- pretends he cares for the middle class and the poor-He doesn,tl He is truly fake.

    Go Obama/Biden2012.

Obama, please don't make this election about abortion rights–you could lose my vote if you go much further down this road. I agree with giving gays marriage rights, I agree with everything else you stand for, but my vote depends largely on our agreement that fewer unwanted pregnancies and abortions is a desirable goal. Making abortion illegal would be detrimental, but expanding access to it is not the path forward.

he would serve as a "pro-life" president

riiiiiight, a pro-lifer who'll try to suck us into wars that KILL PEOPLE

and he'll support the death penalty

some pro-lifer he is, just like most republicans they only think life is precious when you're still in the womb, after that....GOOD LUCK!

    @ Larry in Houston
"It's amazing to me – the republicans say it's okay to put our 18 to 22 year olds out on the Front Line – (all strong & Physical Healthy) to die for our Country- but it's NOT okay to 'abort' a baby that is born with some type of defect – or in a case of rape – incest / death of a Mother – & the list goes ON."

Kinda comparing apples and oranges there. Those 18 to 22 year olds made that choice (Democrats never had any problems with them being on the front line either, so let's not kid ourselves thinking that it's just Republicans). Babies are not able to make any choices yet.

Because he has no authority to do so. However, he has stated that he would appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Many on this post need to just read Roe v. Wade. Every argument for/against has been made. Personal opinion is just that. Why with all the tax exempt church money, televangelist money, conservative billionaire money have they not brought a case to overturn it? They're either waiting to stack the court with a Presidential win (Reagan didn't pull it off with Rehnquist and looks like Robert's not totally in their pocket) OR they feel it's best to trot it out for the base every election.

READING IS FUNDEMENTAL – read the decision it's all there.

Ya see RS...that is where you are wrong...... First of all it is statistically provable that conservatives are more generous... so they do help the poor... Also eveyone wants better healtcare....... the difference is your idea of helping the poor and better healthcare is when someone else pays the bill. As for your little symantic game at top.... I'll as you the question in reverse...... if you are ok with killing unborn can you oppose killing a serial killer?.....If you can be against one an for the other....then the same works for you too!

Rick McDaniel - Governor Romney as president would appoint U.S. Supreme Court justices that would definitely overturn Roe vs Wade. Furthermore, if Congress passed legislation that would make abortion illegal, he would sign that legislation. Voting for the Romney/Ryan ticket is voting to end women's rights to control their body. Period!
