Romney's son apologizes to Obama for 'swing' remark

(CNN) – Tagg Romney, Mitt Romney's oldest son, apologized to President Barack Obama Monday for saying he wanted to "take a swing" at him during contentious presidential debates.

Obama and Tagg Romney were seen speaking on the stage after Monday's final presidential debate, held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. Two Obama aides said the conversation included an apology for the remark, made last week during a radio interview.

Asked in that interview what it's like "to hear the President of the United States call your dad a liar," Tagg Romney joked about his fantasy response.

"Jump out of your seat and you want to rush down to the debate stage and take a swing at him," he said. "But you know you can't do that because, well, first because there's a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because that's the nature of the process. You know they're going to try to do anything they can do to make my dad into something he's not."

"We signed up for it, we've got to kind of sit there and take our punches, and send them the other way," he continued.

One of Tagg Romney's brothers, Josh, downplayed the comments in an interview on ABC's "The View."

"That brother has slugged me a couple of times," Josh Romney said. "I'm sure President Obama has nothing to worry about."

Asked about the original comments on Thursday, Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said Tagg Romney was "joking about how frustrating this process can be for family."

CNN's Rachel Streitfeld contributed to this report.

That, plus threatening the President is a felony. Good thing for Tagg that President Obama is the kind, understanding father he is.

Good reminder for all the Romney's – just because you disagree with someone/something doesn't give you the right to hurt or intimidate like a bully. This group would be such an embarrassment in the White House.

None of them have the mental capacity to deal with an office of this stature. Obama will lead the country for another 4 years and after that if she decides to run Hillary Clinton will be the next President after Obama.

Yes, things can get heated in situations like this. This can't be easy for either family.

Why isn't this guy thrown in prison for making this remark, isn't a felony to threaten the president of the United States of America

If you read the full statement, this Tagg's comment is completely harmless and not provocative in any way. I see CNN is trying to make it into something it is not. I am surprised Tagg apologized in the first place. This is so minor.

Does anyone really care about this pathetic drama? Really, CNN, this is on your FRONT PAGE. There was a THIRD PARTY PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE tonight. You know, a debate that featured four other candidates that will be on most ballots this November. Corporate blackout strikes again.

I wish there was someone really worth voting for. Where are the smart people? The ones we can trust not to lie to our face. The ones that are not worried about how they look politically or are worried about their next election. Just people that care about the people of this country. I don't qualify and do not care for politics, but care about the people of this country. Sorry folks, can't help ya.

Is Romney blinking so much because Obama is making him tear up ? Or is it a wedgie in the secret underwear? Is he hurt at being called out as a blatant teller of untruths? The Mormon Munsters need to cowboy up .... Or return to the planet that supplies their secret underwear, for adjustments.

So, you threaten to take a swing in public, then PRIVATELY apologize.

It must be a family trait.

Really, Romney is basically Obama-like but with full of hot air and without the experience.

I call b.s. on the downplay. Had President Obama had a son of adult age who said the same thing, The Republican Right would paint him as a Lil'Wayne or Easy E.

That's what we can expect from Romney-just strike anyone, even our President. The GOP are bigots and disrespect Obama because he is Black. We don't need a cult leading, tax avoiding, job killing draft dodger in the Whitehouse. Obama 2012.

It's nice to see some class for a change after all the negative stuff by both sides and especially the super pacs.
I give the families of both presidential candidates A+ for the way they've handled this whole shooting match.
