Romney's son apologizes to Obama for 'swing' remark

(CNN) – Tagg Romney, Mitt Romney's oldest son, apologized to President Barack Obama Monday for saying he wanted to "take a swing" at him during contentious presidential debates.

Obama and Tagg Romney were seen speaking on the stage after Monday's final presidential debate, held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. Two Obama aides said the conversation included an apology for the remark, made last week during a radio interview.

Asked in that interview what it's like "to hear the President of the United States call your dad a liar," Tagg Romney joked about his fantasy response.

"Jump out of your seat and you want to rush down to the debate stage and take a swing at him," he said. "But you know you can't do that because, well, first because there's a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because that's the nature of the process. You know they're going to try to do anything they can do to make my dad into something he's not."

"We signed up for it, we've got to kind of sit there and take our punches, and send them the other way," he continued.

One of Tagg Romney's brothers, Josh, downplayed the comments in an interview on ABC's "The View."

"That brother has slugged me a couple of times," Josh Romney said. "I'm sure President Obama has nothing to worry about."

Asked about the original comments on Thursday, Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said Tagg Romney was "joking about how frustrating this process can be for family."

CNN's Rachel Streitfeld contributed to this report.

APOLOGIZING AND PANDERING is what Obama now does he should appreciate it. We APOLOGIZE and PANDER to muslims at the drop of a know, those people that STONE WOMEN and HANG GAYS in public...yes, those people...all because of cartoons and videos...even when they are produced in 100% compliance with laws and freedoms afforded to all Americans. What a GREAT leader he is.

Tagg, many of us "little people" feel the same way. Ba-rack and Biden are the most corrupt, venal, self-serving men to disgrace the White House. Neither gives a hoot about the people of this nation, only lining their pockets and having their egos stroked.

Once again the character shows, it is sad that the same can't be said of Obama.

Child will always rush to defend their Dad's as the Obama children would. Parents teach their children as they grow up to be respectful and have manners but little kids have to learn. Ann still has work to do with raising Tagg as his actions were like a little boy not a grown 42 year old man with children of his own. But Mitt's sons are no different then him as Mitt's Dad had to make his respect adults too. As we watch other fake Republicans/Tea Party show disrespect to not only the President but to women, this seems to be normal. President Obama knew Mitt's son was acting like a 4 year old and handled the manner like any adult would dealing with a child.

What a stupid remark of Tagg Romney, joking or not. It's politics...if that kind of rage is in Romney's eldest son, he had to get it from somewhere...Mitt perhaps? Yeah, that's the kind of president I

See, that's the diff between having class (Obama) and not having class (Tagg). A gaffe is when you say what you really mean.

How dare Tagg disrespect the President of the United States by touching his back as though he were a friend or Romney interrupting as though Obama was a board member Romney was taking to task. We elected Obama to the highest office, and until he no longer holds it ( God forbid) Romney and self- righteous Ryan ought to show respect. But then again, they don't respect 47percent of the country or women.

Mitt Romney raised his children to violently attack black people, or any other people they don't want.

I don't like Romney – he teaches violence and disrespect, and he is likely to take a swing at some foreign leader when he loses his temper.

ANN: "No matter which party one feels more alinged to, Tagg's gesture tells me that the Romneys are a wonderful family (they certainly raised their son well.) I felt that was decent gesture, character attacks are an unfortunate reality of our political process. We all would have to stand up and indicate "enought is enought", lets stick to issues in order to change that. Thank you Tagg!"

Are you kidding me right now? "Wonderful family"? Really? All I see are a bunch of bullies.

I wonder where old Tagg would be if this was Russia. At least he could have waited to express himself at a banquet.

I think Tagg Romney needs to be arrested about that comment he made towards the President. He has no respect for leadership.

I hope that Romney wins, because no matter what you think of him he is good for all americans. You that hate the huge corporations but fail to understand they started as small or even middle class buisness, but grew and became large corporations. That is not happening now because it is impossible for small business to expand because of policy. When small buisness expand they hire more people and less are jobless, and since nobody is starting small business because of uncertanty that this and the last adminstration caused.. We need to go in a new direction, and for all of you that say that he was left in this situation well. The democrats held the senate and every attempt to reign in fanny may and freddy mack was thwarted by them. The bubble itself was started a long time ago, but the effect of the crash was made worse by greed led by a person named Barney Frank... Bush was at fault but the the other side had as much to do with the disaster we had so President Obama isn't fixing bushes mess.. He is fixing just as much his own parties mess as well.

Taggs’ comment about taking a swing at the President is disrespectful and very disturbing. First of all Tagg is not a child but a grown man and he should show restraint and maturity. I believe he should be arrested and fined, (any other average US Citizen would have been questioned most likely by the FBI), as an example to all others that you cannot make idol threats about the President. There are some extreme right idiots who might think by attacking the President, he may be doing Tagg a favor and be rewarded.
I was very angry with the Iraqi reporter who threw a shoe at President Bush and questioned why even bother to help the Iraqis with their attitude. I am not a big fan of President Bush for putting us in that country, just to let you know, but this seems to be the trend with the Republicans; make a idol threat and maybe, just maybe some extremist might react. The Romney’s from father to sons now are just plain old bullies. Remember it was Romney who convinced a group of friends to attack and bully a high school student. Also in business, Romney stated he enjoyed firing people, a bully. As a politician, running for President stated that he does not care about the 47%ers. Lets not forget about the dog on the car roof when he was Governor. A bully.

Good for him, if you are a son who believes in his father's honor than a public attempt to dishonor him should make you furious.

I would feel the exact same way. Also – CNN why are you still reporting on this?

He should apologize. It's terrorism to use violence, or the threat of violence, to silence dissent. It isn't really a joke to threaten some one because you don't like what they say, and he should be grown up enough to realize this.

When it turned out what Obama said was true, that's not something you want to advertise. The only places that threaten violence against people where what they say is true is autocratic dicatorships.
