Romney economic speech at company that received stimulus funds

Ames, Iowa (CNN) - The owner of an Iowa construction company where Mitt Romney will deliver a speech on the economy received stimulus funds, according to the government's web site that tracks expenditures from the federal program.

Kevin Kinzler, owner of Kinzler Construction Services, received a $1.25 million dollar loan from the Small Business Administration through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in May of 2009, shortly after the stimulus plan was signed into law by President Obama.

The Recovery.Gov web site describes the loan as being designed "to aid small businesses which are unable to obtain financing in the private credit marketplace."

In addition to the small business loan, Kinzler Construction Services also received nearly $650,000 in stimulus funds through grants provided by the Department of Energy. The grants were first reported by the left leaning blog, Think Progress.

Romney has made the plight of small businesses a key line of attack on Obama in the final weeks of his campaign.

"I want to make sure that we champion small business, we help small business grow and thrive," Romney said on Thursday in Cincinnati before embarking on a bus tour across the battleground state of Ohio.

The GOP nominee has also repeatedly labeled the stimulus program a failure and accused the president of basing his second term agenda around passing another round of Recovery-type funds.

"The president has the same old answers as in the past – he wants another stimulus, he wants more government workers, and he wants to raise taxes," Romney said at one Ohio stop.

In excerpts of Friday's speech on the economy in Ames released by his campaign aides, Romney is again expected to tweak the president's program.

"A new stimulus, three years after the recession officially ended, may spare government, but it will not stimulate the private sector any better than did the stimulus of four years ago," says one speech excerpt.

Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior campaign adviser, says Romney's speech will lay out why this is a "change" election.

"This election is about big things: education of our children, choices in our healthcare, whether we have jobs, the strength of our military, our dependence on foreign oil and America's place in the world," Fehrnstrom said.

"There are big choices facing the American electorate as they think about the election. Do they want real change or not?"

"Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior campaign adviser, says Romney's speech will lay out why this is a 'change' election."

You just can't trust anything Romney says. He has no real direction for this country. His entire campaign is BS. The only way that this is a "change" election for Romney is that he keeps changing his BS every day.

I think the better term here for Romney's campaign would be "correction election," since their half-wit candidate will say something and the campaign will be along directly to correct what he got wrong.

Wasn't it John Kerry who gave Romney the advice that before he debated President Obama he should finish debating himself. Just like Romney's failed trip overseas, he really didn't listen and learn much. He opened his mouth and removed all doubt why President Obama is the only choice going forward.

Why does Mitt keep having speeches at businesses that receive FEDERAL funding? What will those same people do if Mitt was in office? Would they go bankrupt? I am just wondering.

Hi guest.......what's up my friend? To answer your's not illegal for him to campaign at a company that received's just not very smart considering his message that stimulus was a failure. Makes him look a little foolish......don't you think?

    October 26, 2012 12:24 pm at 12:24 pm |

More ROMNESIA to come. The stimulus was wrong but the stimulus helped this company out. Spin spin spin. Somebody should ask him if the stimulus worked for Kinzler co. I would like to hear his answer on that one.

It is not illegal, it is hypocritical of Romney and the guy who received the stimulus and now pretends it is iffy!

No it's not illegal but it's dishonest... basically saying the other guys plan didn't work while your standing at the very place the plan worked.

Wonder how many times he mentions failed stimulus or policies in a building where stimulus may be keeping the light or microphone on?

It may not be *illegal* to campaign at a business that received stimulus funds, but it is quite ironic. Those stimulus funds helped that business to grow. That business is a great example of what happens when government invests in America. That is all Obama wants to do. He wants small businesses to flourish.

does anyone believe the polls that 49% of the peole are stupid enough to actually support Romney? This country is in real trouble if thats true!
What amazes me is that after 4 years of a failed administration ( even by their own standards ), with so many Americans struggling paycheck to paycheck ( and they are the lucky ones! ), some people still consider giving this failed experiment more time. Really? How many million more people need to go on food stamps and how many more homes need to be foreclosed on for people to admit it isn't working?

Ok, so let me get this straight: He is going to give an economic speech at a business that received funds from the recovery act and that helped thems ay on their feet, and say that that same plan was a bad idea but yet tout no ideas himself? Wow, and you expect to have me take him seriously. Obama/Biden 2012

Correct, but it DOES call out the challenger on his lie that the stimulus didn't work and makes him look like the clueless fool he is!

  13. Where's the beef?

Dear Guest – or should I say "Guest the Clueless". This company is around today because of Obama's policies. Romney is going there to talk about how Obama's policies are bad for America. Ironic, isn't it?

On it's not illegal but is sure is hypocritial!! What is Romney gonna say "The stimulus did'nt work" at a company who directly benefited from it??? Thes GOP clowns are betting that America is stupid!! Ryan criticited the stumulus while at the same time begging for stimulus funds and praising how it helped small businesses in his district!!

America should be very concerned when Romney advertises "Big Changes" what he means is that there will be more businesses like sensata that regardless of rpoductivity their jobs will be shipped to China, Womens reproductive rights will be eliminated, Wall Street regulations will be recinded, Medicare and Social Security will be privatized. Those are the "Big Changes" he is talking about as he is nothing more than a pitch man on some infomercial for the GOP. Can anyone say Shamwow!!

  15. This is Romney's big speach? The President Obama did champion small business

President Obama did/does/will champion people, small business, the American way of life, and the 100%. Citizens are beginning to see what happens when the web woven by Romney's creative facts and stories, begin to twist and get mixed-up. Romney ends telling a horror tale, where victory has prevailed.

As an undecided, getting closer to a decision based on this weeks developments, I am amazed at what a "chameleon" Mitt Romney has become in the last several days (specifically since the last debate). He is sounding more like a clone of President Obama, especially with the most recent stomp message of "Change"....waiting to hear the song "A Change is Gonna Come". My concern is that if he can make these recent changes on his positions to win the presidency, will he also make a change once in the White House??

Amazing how many businesses benefited from the stimulus and hired workers because of it, but turn around and tell their employees to vote for Romney or else.

Romney's staff even sent out memos to employers telling them how to give their employees the or else line.

Sounds like Romney love the Russian politics of Putin.

  18. This is Romney's big speach? The President Obama did champion small business

@Guest. It is not illegal, just an unwise decision on Romney's part. This was supposed to be his big speech to challenge President Obama's policies. So, Romney gives a speech where President Obama's policies worked. Oh, forgot, it's hard nowadays since The President's policies are beginning to work all over and digging US out of THE GREAT RECESSION.

WOW!! This man has no core. This is proof positive. It is astounding why people believe this man. He is standing in the very place where the stimulus helped a small business and will disparage President Obama – who as is turns out, helped this small business. I shake my head in disbelief. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

You need psychological help if that's what you think because the pictures clear on Romney if president you'll see more of the same and more deregulation than Bushs terms because his advisors are none other than Cheney and others ,the same snakes that created the catastrophes that idiot left us with 4 years ago, remember that republicans when you vote you can't take it back if you screwup again and you've been doing that for decades haven't yah!!

Yet, so many just drool at the opportunity to blame Obama and cheer the complete BS coming from the Right. And when I say BS, I don't mean slight BS, I mean the kind that's in-your-face (i.e. Flip Flopping no core having Romney, Entire convention based on a quote out of context -”You didn’t build that”, smaller/no Gov. unless it’s for dictating the personal lives of citizens, what women’s rights?, show me your papers, why how dare you ask for mine, on and on). The kind of BS that anybody with half a brain can see that its BS—like magic bean budgets that will instantly heal the economy. Plant this 5 trillion dollar bean and the rich get the goose that lays golden eggs and the rest get the stalk/shaft. Did I say 5 trillion, I NEVER said 5 trillion. If you are into believing BS just because it fits comfortably within your world, then Rock On. Just remember to take full credit for the outcomes.

  23. Wonder Which Romney Will Show Up There?

Guest: Is it illegal to campaign where stimulus was received?

    No. It's just stupid. It's a fool's exercise.

In Mitt Romney you have a candidate who in 2009 actually supported stimulus and said the government needed to INCREASE the stimulus spending. So Romney has actually criticized the government for not spending enough on stimulus, and now he opposes the same stimulus he once said was too low. At least I think he opposes it. After watching Mitt Romney criticize Obama's foreign policy for the last 6 years and then go into the third debate and agree with everything he said regarding same, I would say that it's entirely within the realm of possibility that Mitt will do another flip-flop-flip and go back to supporting the stimulus. Maybe today he will endorse it.

Mitt Romney forgets that there are these things called cameras that capture your image and and voice, and then later people can actually play them back and listen to your BS. You can take a split screen of the same guy and watch the idiot debate himself and still come out the loser. Then he actually says he never supported the stimulus.

He either has a short memory, or he's a lying liar............. or both.
