Romney ad pushes back on auto bailout attacks

(CNN) – An ad airing in Ohio from Mitt Romney's campaign tries to dull some of the blows coming from President Barack Obama on Romney's stance on the auto bailout.

The spot claims Romney would be a better advocate than Obama for the American auto industry if he's elected president.

"Who will do more for the auto industry? Not Barack Obama," a narrator says. "Fact checkers confirm his attacks on Mitt Romney are false. The truth? Mitt Romney has a plan to help the auto industry. He's supported by Lee Iacocca and the Detroit News."

The narrator then moves to lines of attack that Romney's used on the stump, saying, "Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job."

The ad, which the ad tracker CMAG recorded airing in the Toledo market on Saturday morning, comes as polls in Ohio show a closely fought race. A CNN/ORC poll released Friday showed Obama holding a 4-point advantage over Romney in the contest for Ohio's much-fought over 18 electoral votes.

Obama's most potent criticism of Romney in Ohio has been his attacks on Romney's stance on the auto bailout, a program that began on former President George W. Bush's watch. Romney penned an op-ed in The New York Times in 2008 predicting that a government bailout of the Big Three American automakers would "virtually" guarantee the "demise" of the industry.

In the 2008 piece, Romney said the money needed to keep General Motors and Chrysler Group alive during bankruptcy should have come from the private sector, with the government providing only "guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing."

The problem was that there was no one other than the government available to write checks for the automakers in late 2008 and early 2009.

As for the claim that Chrysler was preparing to move production of Jeeps overseas, a spokesman for the company had earlier emphatically denied that report.

"Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China," Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Gualberto Ranieri wrote on Chrysler's blog.

Lis Smith, a spokeswoman for Obama's campaign, said the new Romney ad "is a sure sign that he knows he's in trouble in Ohio."

"When the American auto industry and a million workers' jobs were on the line, Mitt Romney turned his back. Now he's pretending it never happened and is trying to scare Ohioans by repeating a blatant falsehood that Chrysler is moving its Jeep operations to China."

She continued, "Mitt Romney might be willing to do anything to close the deal, but Ohioans know where he stood when it mattered most and won't be fooled by his dishonest ads in the final days of this campaign."

CNN's Rachel Streitfeld and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

I understand impartial reporting, but maybe the candidates would lie less, if when they did, the newsline began with, in this case "Mitt lies again – Jeep is NOT moving to China".
Mitt promises US jobs, really, when he has a proven history of gutting US companies and moving jobs overseas just to make a fast buck.
Mitt only wanted US gov't auto support after bankruptcy, you know why, bankruptcy voids tons of debt, workers benefits, unpaid, the companies and workers owed money on the ropes, while some rich guy with billion in loose change can swoop in buy the operation for a song, and do whatever to make a fast buck, which Mitt knows alot about from his time at Bain Captial when he was gutting US companies for a fast buck.
I will always find it unbelievable the number, apparently nearly half, of Americans who simply believe ANYTHING they are told rather than research anything, which is pretty simple on the internet, including a website that fact checks both sides equally, really, imagine that, bi partisan, it is possible, it's called morals and guts, wish politics would develop them again.

Romney is so fake,I left the Mormon Church because they teach members to be slick and secretive,so I know he is a big liar. TV documentary about LDS Church mistreatment of gay members is true and they do give eletrical penis shock treatment to gay members and have caused the death of some by doing so. Mitt Romney knows this,he was one of their Bishops who help control the members. You must research the Documentary called Proposition 8

Please save the United States from this Mormon. Please do more research into the LDS Church.Send someone into to the Church to live as a member undercover then you will have your proof. Members are really afraid and can't get out without lossing their families and everything they have. The Church helps them in order to brainwash the members and then end up owning them. Somebody Please help them

How can Romney look Americans in the eye?

On Friday, Chrysler announces they are hiring in Toledo.
Romney lies and says all Chysler jobs are moving to China.

Romney's lies against businesses are disgusting. Thou shalt not lie!!! It is a sin and condemns Romney to hell for eternity.

It stands to reason that if the economy continues to flounder as it is now, people will have less money to spend on a lot of things such as an automobile. 4 More years of Obama will ensure that.

When the pressure gets to great and you just have to is the case with a lot of spoiled rich lie and distort to get what you think your entitled to!!!!! Romney's eat or be eaten works in the cutthroat world of big business take over.... only the bottom line matters. Not in the position of leader of all the people and what is "right". That's a little harder than making money!!!

Rmoney stood in front of the good people of Defiance Ohio area two nights ago and told them production of Jeep models was being moved to China. The Chrysler Jeep company then emphatically denied this Rmoney lie. A lie about outsourcing good jobs to China from Romney – the chief outsourcer and creator of the Bain model for takeovers and outsourcing.

What a stupid ad, to be sure. It's the same BS he's been saying for over a year now ... "I'm Mitt Romney And I Could Have Done It Better". Expect he wouldn't have done it better. He'd have just let the auto industry collapse. Which is exactly what he'd have done to the housing industry as well. You can take the man out of Wall Street, but you can't take Wall Street out of the man.

Romney has no grasp of reality and it shows, over and over again.

It is great Mitt Romney is not letting Obama/ Biden 2012 get away with the misleading campaign points, but there is a larger point they apparently are letting Obama get away with. The $15 billion cost to taxpayers for Obama's gift to the UAW that is not coming back. Obama was only looking out for his special interest 2008 election supporters and screwed the American taxpayer for $15 billion in the process. We do not need that kind of politician in the White House.

All politicians tell political fibs but Romney has shown a frightening pathological habit of lying to the voters. Just a few hrs after the false Jeep claim the company had to come out and say it isn't true but now Romney is using the same claim in an ad? Romney is untrustworthy.

Obama didn't save the auto industry, he saved the unions. The unions are the only thing that can eventually destroy the auto industry, like so many other industries. The industry would have been much better off without forced unionization.

There is a BIG difference. Obama ALREADY did something for the auto industry – and it appears to be thriving. Romney can ONLY talk about it.

You don't need an advocate when you cease to exist, which is what would have happened to the auto industry if Romney were president and had let Detroit go bankrupt without government financing. The government was the only source of financing available (the banks were broke too and needed their own bailout).

Again Romney blatantly lying in a TV ad? How many times does this have to happen before people wake up? On a day when the news from Chrysler was that it was adding 1,100 jobs in Michigan, Romney makes up a story that Jeep is going to send all American jobs to China.

This is the guy who you want to be president?
