(CNN) - Shortly after Sen. Scott Brown's campaign announced Monday that the Republican incumbent will cancel his appearance at Tuesday's Senate debate in Massachusetts, his Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren also pulled out of the event. Both cited conditions related to Hurricane Sandy.
"It is simply not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes," Colin Read, Brown's campaign communications director, said in a statement. "The focus for all of us before, during and after the storm needs to be on emergency response and disaster relief, not campaigns and politics."

About an hour and a half later, Warren campaign manager Mindy Myers sent out a statement on the debate, as well:
"Elizabeth believes the focus now must be on public safety and ensuring people get the help they need during the storm and in its aftermath," Myers said. "With the concern for public safety and cleanup paramount, Elizabeth believes the debate should not be held tomorrow."
The debate–the fourth and final showdown of the season–is scheduled to take place at the WGBH studios in Brighton and moderated by CNN Chief National Correspondent John King.
Both Brown and Warren canceled their public campaign events on Monday as the Category 1 hurricane barreled toward the U.S. East Coast. Senate candidates in Pennsylvania and Virginia, as well as the presidential candidates, also scrapped some events off their schedules. A Maine Senate debate scheduled for Tuesday was also canceled.
The contest is one of the most expensive and closely watched Senate races in the country, and a recent poll shows the two candidates in a close sprint toward the finish line.
No announcements have been made on whether the debate will be rescheduled.

Scott Brown did exactly the right thing.
Whether they debate or not in Boston, it won't have an impact on what Sandy is doing. I'm not sure if Brown is sincere in this, or just ducking the debate.......so hard to think the best about any politician these days.
I bet he's happy!
@Valentina
Scott Brown did exactly the right thing.

It was Democrat Elizabeth Warrens Idea to wait and see about the storm , then hopefully reschedule .
Lets see if Brown holds up to his word.
Seriously CNN? Massachusetts is being slammed by a Frankenstorm and the headline you choose is one that implies Brown is just running away from a debate?
Here are some alternate choices for headlines.
Brown Responds Appropriately to the Hurricane
Brown Campaign Decides a Hurricane Slamming Into the State Is More of a Concern Than Yet Another Debate Against the Poser
Brown Shows Good Judgement While Warren Doesn't Have Enough Sense to Come Out of the Rain
They were not going to debate anyways. The Governor Deval Patrick announced that everything should be closed, secially Governmemt jobs, events, etc. only thing open is supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations.
He did thenright thing obviously, but he just stated the obvious. I'm from mass and NO ONE here were expecting thisndebate to happen. We all kne and expected to be cancelled
The Brown campaign was anxious to cancel the debate since Brown was doing worse on each successive outing. His admission that he was a fan of ultra-right Supreme Court Justice Scalia in the recent debate blew his "moderate" cover and opened a lot of people's eyes to the truth of Brown's views. If you look at all his votes including amendments, etc., and how he worked behind the scenes to weaken the Wall Street reforms, etc., those who have takent the time to do the research on him have been recognizing that he's not who he's been trying to portray himself as in his ads. Heck, he didn't just vote for the extremist Blount amendment - he was a co-sponsor with the far-right anti-female Todd Aiken.
Scott Brown REALLY BLEW IT when hestart the "she doesn't look like an Indian argument". What a DUMB thing to say and start. I know MANY people including my Mother that you would have NEVER guested her ethnicity. VERY SHALLOW, VERY DUMB!!! He deserves to lose!!
Scott Cosmo Brown doesn't want to debate anymore. He'd rather put condescending ads on TV about Warren; that's the manly thing to do. He also has a funny ad running now where his wife and daughters say that Brown is a supporter of Women's Issues -. I bet he used actors! LMAO!
If either of these candidates was sincere the first thing thy would have done is to call the other (never mind who did it first irrelevant) and said hey what do we do about this debate? Then issue a joint statement of cancellations and reasons why.
Optics, scoring points politically out of disasters.... whoever does that just lost my vote.
What happened to morality and honesty of the people for the people and by the people those words do not demand ideology or party affiliation to be right and determine the appropriate re-action.
If "appearances" or "optics" win votes its god help America.... what matters are real actions in a reasonably timely manner.

Hodgson.
One more debate will not make a difference. Women should know by now that we need our voices heard 100% of the time. Not 50/50 or 90%. GOP will take us back 50 years. Do not allow GOP to win. Vote E.Warren.
Senator Brown is kicking some hypocritical/lying butt. Senator Brown, "Adelante"!
