Looking presidential: The optics of leadership during a disaster

(CNN) - With Hurricane Sandy slamming the East Coast, President Barack Obama discarded campaign events in Florida and Virginia to return to Washington and address the nation from the White House. Meanwhile, Gov. Mitt Romney adjusted his schedule to hit the battleground state of Ohio, while directing his campaign resources in Virginia and New Hampshire to focus on storm relief.

The candidates are seeking to balance the real threat of a killer storm against the need to squeeze out any last-minute advantages on the campaign trail.

The comments about Libya are made without the facts. No one called upon him to save their lives in Libya. This wonderful man who was the AMbassador believed in the people of Libya and they loved him. No one thought he would be harmed least of all the Libyans.

Presidents are never off duty. Whether it is George Bush, Bill Clinton, George Herbert Walker Bush or anyone else. Just remember that Mr. Bush was in a classroom during 9/11 reading a book upside down. Ronald Reagan was sow to respond to the deaths of over 200 Marines. That did not mean that he did not care.

It is one thing to have a genuine beef but it is another to use speculation and false news reports as your source.

How about all of those lives that were killed during the Iraq war???? A war that wasn't suppose to be, we wasted millions of dollars on that war. You got Bin Laden, oh that right it was under the Obama adminsitration.

Looking presidential, and being presidential are two totally different things. Sometimes people look impressive, than they turn out to be Donald Trump. Looks can be deceiving.

Mitt should just go home to one of his houses and stay put for a while.

Yep Romney is very concerned about those in the affected area, so concerned that they are sending supplies to the battle ground states of NC, VA, NH and PA, but never mind NY or NJ the two hardest hit states. Since they are battle ground states they matter others not so much.

I'm from the midwest and we had a flood of epic proportions when the Missouri river was intentionlly flooded by the Army Core of Engineers and we had four months of devastation and Obama didn't come here and help us nor did fEMA do anything...evbidently we were on our own...thousands of people lost their homes and land to the flood waters when the Core opened their gates...I'm guessing that those blue states are more important

Yet President Obama continued campaigning when Hurricane Isaac hit New Orleans and he didn't bother to visit them until 6 days later. Sounds to me like this is nothing more than an attempt of Obama to win votes since we are a few days away from election day.

Sounds to me like you work for Ralph Reed and Karl Rove . Your only joy is Negativity and disinformation .

Romney , GW Bush different time .

Here we go again Libya...what does that have to do with the hurricane? Anytime Romney makes an ass of himself some moron says Libya. Out of 3 1/2 yrs that's it. Makes me wonder if that was a set up for talking point for John McCain and Newt to stay in the media. Turn off Fox and get some real news. Romney looks desperate.Needs to campaign in those areas but doesnt want to look like he doesnt care. HE DOESNT! The president is not raking up points he's doing his job!

Mitt Romney is a pathological liar. I've research him over the past 6 years, and he truly is the most dishonest person every to run for President (other than Trump). That should tell you something.

OOPS. Hit wrong button: LOL. You would think that people have enough common sense to LISTEN to what Mittens has said? Like he wants to DO AWAY with FEMA and leave each state to deal with emergencies and disasters! Sooooo, for those that are suffering from Sandy, take a second, and think how things would be IF M. R. is elected! You would be on your own!! While things are bad, everything that I am reading and seeing says we are getting better, slowly, we are headed in the right direction! This will all STOP if M. R. is elected as he will begin implementing his plans, you know the ones he hasn't explained yet! My thoughts & prayers for those effected by Sandy.
