Disaster relief: Obama, Romney differ on federal role

Washington (CNN) - When Chris Christie praises President Barack Obama as "outstanding" and "incredibly supportive," you know something extraordinary has occurred.

In this case, it was once-in-a-lifetime Superstorm Sandy, which caused the outspoken Republican governor of New Jersey to declare a state of emergency and seek federal help for widespread devastation.

    This is reckless and irresponsible.
Kinda like Mitt and his buses trying to get into the disaster area despite repeated pleas from the Red Cross to stay away and to let them do their job?

"We need Mitt Romney and his capability to manage our way out of this mess."

I totally understand that you can't stand your country's President, but to think that Romney is going to come in and sprinkle some magic Republican pixie dust and fix America's problems is almost childish, and certainly delusional. For a start, you do not know which version of Mitt Romney will show up for the job?
btw – got your new handle picked out yet?

" We need our federal government to be managed for the good of our nation"

You're expecting the Republicans to do this after their leader has already thrown half of said nation under the bus before he is even elected??? Really???

Romney is out of his mind if he thinks disaster relief can be privatized! That would make it a business, which are about selling goods for profit! What biz in their right minds would take on such a 1 sided proposition! None! They would have to rely on donations, because no1 would be able to pay for this service & in a case like Sandy w/15 states affected, they would be in over their heads! If Romney thinks federal disaster relief is immoral he has no business caring for a nation & its people! Every non-extremist nation on the planet provides this service for its citizens! What's immoral is Romney's deregulation, cut funding, repealing & privatization agenda! I know what he's doing & I'm not kidding when I say he'll take us back to 1912! No unions, regulations, schooling, healthcare, clean water, air, food or bans on child labor! Yep, w/the RR's at the helm we'll be a corporate/1% Haven!! Forward to the Future, Obama 12!!

  8. ThinkAgain: All of the GOP's policies are PROVEN FAILURES

Mittens loves to brag on about he was a governor and yet he doesn't know the most basic things about disaster relief, in particular, the Red Cross doesn't want canned goods, they want cash! The Red Cross not only isn't set up to handle goods delivered to them that they then have to transport, cash allows the Red Cross to buy locally, which in turn helps the local economy just hit by the disaster.

    Mittens is such a doofus!

    Obama/Biden 2012 = The only sane choice

yes...because o course the red cross needs the 36 cans of beans and two cases of water collected at the Non Campaign event......as to management by Four and the Door.....Romney has never been a manager......a hatchet man yes.....Romney is a lying pile o steaming crud.....his Ohio adds that are completely false regarding the auto industry....to which GM spokesman says...."we have clearly entered some sort of parallel universe" and also forcing the President of GM to emphatically state Romney is lying....Romney's position on FEMA is clearly wrong now......surprise....well not really – he's always wrong...just like Obama said in both second and the last debate......

================================================================================================Did you have any point to your comment? Read it!

Romney, in his foolish pandering to the ultra-right-wing said FEMA should be privatized. Here in the middle of a crisis where anybody with a brain can see the value of a powerful and effective FEMA, Romney looks like a fool. The fact that President Obama is managing the emergency with maturity, force and wisdom makes Romney's comment even more toxic to his campaign. Remember "Good job Brownie" Bush? That's just Romney with a fake Texas accent. Romney=Bush 2.0

    @Four and The Door

We need Mitt Romney and his capability to manage our way out of this mess.
================================================================================================Romney couldn't manage Massachusetts well enough to get them to vote for him in this election! The only parameter the state that improved during Romney's term was healthcare. Ironically, this same program was the model for Obamacare. When Romney wanted to pander to the right-wing in the primary he said he was against the program – the one he created and bragged about in previous Republican Primaries. Now he proposes to repeal Obamacare (remember – Obamacare=Romneycare) and replace it with exactly the same program – minus the requirement to pay the bills. Like all of Romney's ideas he gives no specifics and the math doesn't work. Management skill? No. Lies. Yes.

Four and The Door....Yet, when asked by reporters, at least 11 times on Tuesday, Mitt failed to given an answer whether or not he would get rid of FEMA if president. Yet, he was proud to say so when running for the GOP Pres. nomination. Romney is a fraud. No backbone and no leadership no for November 6th for Romney. Americas want a leadership who can stand up when we are all hurting, President Obama has demonstrate that throughout his time in office.

Obama's prudent preparation for Sandra's devastating effects, including his willingness to cooperate with state officials (Republican or Democrat) in such scenarios, is indicative of the kind of effective president we've had since 2008.

    Hey, 4-door:

    This is called management:

The first month in office our President passed a Stimulus bill that turned around the economy.

GDP went from MINUS 5% to PLUS 5 % within a year.
    The Stock Markets doubled.
We went from LOOSING 800,000 jobs a month to positive job growth.

We would have continues this GROWTH except that his progress was halted when the righties got the ability to filibuster his agenda in the Senate, and later block all progress in the House.

All romney did was buy up prosperous companies, milk all the loose money from them, then sell the pieces for massive profits for himself and his rich buddies. You want THAT for the USA?

And let's not forget how he got a Federal Government bailout to save the Olympics in Salt Lake City. That was certainly the hight of his management abilities.

And we're borrowing trillions of dollars now because Americans are now too cheap to pay for this Great Country. Until the Bush tax cuts, there was no 47% paying NO Federal Income Taxes, and the wealthy paid more also. Enough to balance the budget for a few years, until Bush and his republican Congress drove us into the ditch.

    Four and the Door
This magic formula of pushing disaster costs on to state governments ( or better still privatising it per Romney) does not mean the total costs go away... i'll even grant you they might be done in some cases more cheaply, but once the private profit driver comes into play methinks not.
That said most states regrettably are already underwater debt wise and adding disaster costs simply means local taxes rise, or individuals pay privately to have things fixed.
Please also face the fact that certain states are more vulnerable to these disaster events.... as it happens they tend to be mostly Republican. Look at the horrendous delays and litigation re Exxon Valdez and the Gulf oil spill BP to get money and clean up going... also look at Katrina cost. You fancy that on your tax bill including the interest on the STATE debt?
Having a federal organisation capable of mobilising resources nationally to meet needs is a way of reducing costs of dealing with these nationally spread catastrophes.
With Sandy just look where all the help is coming from coordinated by FEMA means damage repairs will be completed more quickly reducing the state/ national or federal economic loss.
This latter is the raison d'etre for FEMA since these state losses /damage affect the national economy.
Personally i have chose to live because i can aford to do so in aplace where Hurricanes, Tornadoes have not hit for centuries and I dont live near a river and am 750 feet above sea level or the nearest lake.
A lot of people cannot make that choice. done because my dear old mom said the the largest threats to end of the world were earth, wind, fire, and water! very biblical but not wrong.

How do you privatise such an agency? Privatisation of government agencies or departments is good but no key ones like defense, foreign, health etc
