Warren beats Brown for Senate seat in Massachusetts

(CNN) - In a key pick-up of a Republican Senate seat, Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren defeated GOP Sen. Scott Brown Tuesday, according to a CNN projection. With 37 percent of the estimated vote counted, Warren led Brown 52 percent to 48 percent.

The victory is critical to Democratic ambitions to maintain their majority control of the Senate.

Warren, a Harvard University law professor and former Obama administration financial consumer advocate, beat the freshman senator who was seeking a full term to the seat he won two years after the death of Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy. Brown, the first GOP senator from deep blue Massachusetts in decades, billed himself as an independent who voted for the needs of Massachusetts not the demands of either party.

The Warren-Brown race was one of the costliest and nastiest campaigns this cycle. It was marked by Brown's repeated accusations that Warren claimed to be a minority in order to advance her career. She denied that was her motive for listing her ancestry as Native American saying she was told about her heritage by her family.

Good. Native Americans have been terribly underrepresented in both houses of congress.

My eyes are RED tonight because I have been crying since 5:00 p.m. PST. I am so happy and nervous, I 'm not even going to brag. As a religious person, I'll just say thank you God.

Congratulations Ms. Warren, I look forward to your service.

Bye Bye Scott Brown and Murdoch, good riddance!

It's looking like Romney had better start drafting that losing speech. I don't think he can simply lie like has been for the last 6 months and read the victory speech... people might notice that. lol

Congratulations farewell to the tea party we hope! Republicans need to realize that WOMEN ( married and single) mothers, grandmothers vote too! Social issues are Economic issues, for Women . . . Yes it is the economy but when women loose the ability to govern their bodies, there is no "economy" for women.

With only 4 percentage points between them and only 37% reporting how can you even think about calling it?

i prefer the Canadian election system, only 1 election comission,a maximum four month campaign ,paper ballots, and a winner declared by the next daysimple, fast and rarely a contested ballot

Horrible news for the moderates that make up the majority of America. What the Senate does not need is more far left wingers, which by all accounts is what Warren is, or more far right wingers. Despite the partisan rhetoric surrounding almost all races, most non-partisan think takes place Scott Brown squarely in the moderate-right category. I'll take a moderate-anything over a radical left winger or a radical right winger any day of the week.
