Obama makes birthday joke to Boehner

(CNN) – Kicking off a meeting with congressional leaders Friday, President Barack Obama joked with House Speaker John Boehner about his birthday.

After a statement welcoming House and Senate party leaders to the White House, Obama said, "Excuse me, there is one other point I want to make."

The president continued: "My understanding is tomorrow is Speaker Boehner's birthday so for those of you who want to wish him a happy birthday, we are not going to embarrass him with a cake because we didn't know how many candles were needed."

"Yeah right," said Boehner nudging the president.

Instead of a cake it appears Obama bought the House speaker, who will be 63 on Saturday, a rather pricey bottle of wine - Poggio Antico's 1997 vintage brunello.

Boehner's press secretary Brendan Buck tweeted a picture of the present Friday:

What a bunch of hockypoo. The gift was not from Obama, it was from the citizens of the United States of America who paid for it in their taxes during a time of when we owe, we owe, so it's off to work we go, if we can find a job. Handing ot expensive and rare wines by the POTUS is just disgusting when it was suppose to be used AT the White House functions only.

This is exactly why I voted for BO. He is not divisive and can certainly reach across the isle openly and honestly and most of all civilly. I wish the GOP would do the same. Way to go Barack.

Come on Righties lets hear what an evil guy Obama is.

Under $100 per bottle, I think. Will that contribute to drunk driving over the fiscal cliff?

I thought buying gifts for co-workers in goverment was a no-no, unless its shared by the whole group and under a certain price? Is that for lower levels of goverment only?

Election is over. I hope there will be reconciliation and we can all work together for the good of the American People. Politics should end when the votes are counted and the election is final. We have unprecedented problems and if we don't work together to solve them we are doomed. A large middle class has been the real strength of America. A few extremely wealthy and millions of poor people is Third World, lets not go there!

Why does the AMERICAN president give a gift of Italian wine (nice gift) instead of an AMERICAN wine – there are many fine choices of at least comparable quality.

Mitt Romney blames Obama of winning the election by offering gifts, while Romney tried to win the election by offering hundreds of thousands of dollars each to the wealthiest Americans, to secure their backing and influence.

NIce gift. Now if Boehner and the GOP House membership will get on with the government's business, he will deserve it.

Thats one of the reasons why I like this president. He is respectful even to his biggest critics like Boehner. I wish I can say the same about the sore losers like McCain and Romeny!

How far Obama is going to go? First he gave gifts to electorate. Now he is giving gifts to Speaker Boehner. Who is next Mitt Romney.

It's the least Obama could do, considering the childish and destructive behavior of House Republicans helped him get a second term.

Oh good, I was hoping that someone would be sure to put this story out there for the American public. We have a right to know what people are receiving for their birthday, and from whom.'re doing it wrong.
