Biden beelines to D.C. Costco on opening day

(CNN) – Count Vice President Joe Biden among the Washingtonians eagerly awaiting the opening of the District's first Costco.

The second in command made a trip across town Thursday to shop the first Washington location of the wholesale giant on its opening day, walking in prepared with his Costco membership card, which he flashed to the minder at the front door.

A Biden aide said the vice president and his wife have long been patrons of Costco, which requires customers to buy an annual membership to shop at their large warehouse-style stores. The aide said Biden's membership was re-activated Wednesday – including paying the $55 fee - in anticipation of his DC spree.

As he strolled the store's aisles, Biden grabbed a few samples of the store's food items, and picked up, among other things, a Panasonic television and an apple pie. Workers from the store's tire department attempted to get the vice president to browse their offerings, but were rebuffed.

"Hey man I don't need tires," Biden said. "I don't drive anymore."

At one point, he attempted to call his daughter Ashley on his telephone, apparently to get her thoughts on buying one of the store's watches. She didn't answer.

Asked by reporters accompanying him to the store his thoughts on fiscal cliff negotiations, Biden said he was "optimistic" a deal could be reached, but that part of the deal should include extending Bush-era tax cuts for middle class families.

Joe Biden has worked for the government for many years but he is not a rich man. For years he took the train, like every day people like me, to go to work... He really understands middle class Americans and the poor... He is a good man with a great heart. I know a lot of people don't like him on the right, but he represents us better than anyone else so close to the presidency.

What he couldn't have bought an American made TV?

Seriously though the more I get to know Biden over the years the more I love him. He could be my surrogate grampa anytime.

The POTUS is working every possible political angle and deal he can, twising arms and shaking hands all voer the country to stop us from going off the so-called fiscal cliff, and they send Biden to the opening of the DC Costco? I think that says everything you need to know.

Yeah, I like Biden tremendously but he should know better than "embarrassing" his daughter by trying to get her a watch at Costco! Kids...LOL! You go girl:-)

Finally a guy who shops himself. Romney would have ordered his servants to do the work.

Libs–he went to costco instead of Sams because the head CEO is one of his millionaire contributers to his campaign....they hide all their money in the same offshore places......i love sams–they have better and cheaper stuff and their employees don't have to pay hefty union dues...

@ Expat American – To answer your last sentence – ""Now Fox News has to find a way to fill a half hour of ‘outrage’ airtime tonight """
From what I understand – it's a nightly thing over there – My wife would divorce me, if she found out that I changed the channel. I tell people tis all the time : If you wat Fair & Balanced news Info. go to CNN – period. They don't argue / yell or scream / at one another / or cut anyone off –

I love this man – he is one of the few politicians who gets the middle class. He's realistic and down-to-earth. Very refreshing.

Two of my favorites: Costco and Joe Biden.

Costco is a terrific example of American enterprise that succeeds while treating their employees with respect. Nice for Biden to be supportive of this type of business.
