Biden beelines to D.C. Costco on opening day

(CNN) – Count Vice President Joe Biden among the Washingtonians eagerly awaiting the opening of the District's first Costco.

The second in command made a trip across town Thursday to shop the first Washington location of the wholesale giant on its opening day, walking in prepared with his Costco membership card, which he flashed to the minder at the front door.

A Biden aide said the vice president and his wife have long been patrons of Costco, which requires customers to buy an annual membership to shop at their large warehouse-style stores. The aide said Biden's membership was re-activated Wednesday – including paying the $55 fee - in anticipation of his DC spree.

As he strolled the store's aisles, Biden grabbed a few samples of the store's food items, and picked up, among other things, a Panasonic television and an apple pie. Workers from the store's tire department attempted to get the vice president to browse their offerings, but were rebuffed.

"Hey man I don't need tires," Biden said. "I don't drive anymore."

At one point, he attempted to call his daughter Ashley on his telephone, apparently to get her thoughts on buying one of the store's watches. She didn't answer.

Asked by reporters accompanying him to the store his thoughts on fiscal cliff negotiations, Biden said he was "optimistic" a deal could be reached, but that part of the deal should include extending Bush-era tax cuts for middle class families.

"Hello? It's kind of difficult to relocate when your business is going bankrupt. Hello?"

And how do you know which businesses are going bankrupt?

I guess if I were Obama, I'd be sending Biden off to do store openings as well.

He certainly belongs more in Costco than near the White House.

I appreciate Costco's special $7 a share dividend they are passing out next month in anticipation of the Obama tax hike.

I'm glad to hear Biden can shop at Costco. They have as good or better prices as Sam'sClub, but they treat their people well.

Our nearest Costco is a 2 hour drive, but I'm thinking of joining anyway. We have a local Walmart (where employees are carefully led through the rules for applying for foodstamps when they start their jobs), and I hate the place. Unfortunately, I often end up shopping there, since my income is so limited. Damn & Blast!

Best wishes in your second term, (adorably human) Joe. I'm glad you have the President's back..

Costco is a true American success. Pay your employees a fair wage and they will be loyal hard working employees who will buy your products. Costco/Democratic ideology is treat people fairly and everyone benefits. The opposite of Walmort/GOP ideology of “I got mine screw you”.

I'd like to shop at COSTCO myself but here isn't one in my area. the annoying thing with D.C is that its hard as hell to find a Wal-Mart in that city! All I could find is the freakin Target except in Maryland or Virginia.

Hello? The businesses that want to relocate. Hello?
Reality check. If business were booming, then they wouldn't want to be wanting to relocate. Would they?

Why are people so hateful about a guy going shopping at Costco? And although all the negative posting people here are just bratty smarta$s kids who don't feel their day is complete if they don't say something putrid to make themselves feel superior, one also has to ask why CNN considers this 'news'

Gotta love Biden – he is a man's man and he shops at normal people stores like Costco. He is welcome at my house anytime for some home-made spaghetti sauce and great conversation!

P.S. I met him personally at Tom Harkin's BBQ before it became a big deal and he was cool even back then.

What's it take to get the republicans to lighten up? Nothing any person does meets your high expectations. Yet many of you didn't graduate from any school, let along college. And you and your party are nothing more than a roadblock to the progress of human kind. You're a bunch of empty headed, knuckle dragging, mouth breathing pod people, parroting the speaking points of the AM radio hate jocks. GET A LIFE.

@allen – You obviously haven't seen the apple pie at Costco. No need to "stage" that purchase.

Costco , huh ? LOL – well, I can honestly tell you there is 6 (six) ( yes 6 ) Costco's here in the Houston area. Guess with 6.5 million ppl – even that isn't enough.

    Good for Joe –

Whatever you say Rudy. I tried pointing out some things that you might not have thought of, and all I get is ridicule from you. For the record, if a business was booming, they may want to relocate for more space – so there's a reality check for you.

Hopefully the bitter legions of GOP/Tea Party voters will repeat the mistakes of 2012 by nominating an extreme social conservative candidate like Palin, Bachmann, Huckabee, Santorum, or Cain.

@ Travis – hate to be a bearer of bad tidings – but there are some Businesses that are re-locating to Texas( from Caif) – this was on the nbc news the other evening – not to mention that a lot of peole are selling their houses in Calif – getting around 900K (give or take around 300K) and actually having their house "built" in Texas – bottom line is this : they are building the same type of home that they had in Calif. – here in TX – for Less than 1/2 of what they sold their old one for.
