Biden beelines to D.C. Costco on opening day

(CNN) – Count Vice President Joe Biden among the Washingtonians eagerly awaiting the opening of the District's first Costco.

The second in command made a trip across town Thursday to shop the first Washington location of the wholesale giant on its opening day, walking in prepared with his Costco membership card, which he flashed to the minder at the front door.

A Biden aide said the vice president and his wife have long been patrons of Costco, which requires customers to buy an annual membership to shop at their large warehouse-style stores. The aide said Biden's membership was re-activated Wednesday – including paying the $55 fee - in anticipation of his DC spree.

As he strolled the store's aisles, Biden grabbed a few samples of the store's food items, and picked up, among other things, a Panasonic television and an apple pie. Workers from the store's tire department attempted to get the vice president to browse their offerings, but were rebuffed.

"Hey man I don't need tires," Biden said. "I don't drive anymore."

At one point, he attempted to call his daughter Ashley on his telephone, apparently to get her thoughts on buying one of the store's watches. She didn't answer.

Asked by reporters accompanying him to the store his thoughts on fiscal cliff negotiations, Biden said he was "optimistic" a deal could be reached, but that part of the deal should include extending Bush-era tax cuts for middle class families.

Vice President Biden doesn't need a tie to go to Costco. Most importantly, the Vice President is wearing his flag pin. Now Fox News has to find a way to fill a half hour of ‘outrage’ airtime tonight.

I like to see stories like this one every now and then. Love the VP cause he is very much like middle America. Very down to earth. I'm sure he could care less about the haters. They're always going to be out there. Happy Holidays Mr. VP.

Rudy, as a former small business owner, I can tell you that membership clubs such as Costco, Sams and BJ's are a prime source of product and supplies for many small business. Many times I could buy my supplies at BJ's or Sams for 20% less than the normal wholesale suppliers.

Vice President Biden is a regular guy who understands and identifies with the common man. Not surprised to see him shopping in Costco.

I dosed off after reading this very pleasant article. But somehow my drowsiness drifted into a nightmare that ended with "V.P. Sarah Palin" running through a D.C. area Costco while hunting moose.

Thank you Mr. Joe Biden. Please stay right where you are – – as our elected Vice President.

lol @ people attacking him even for just shopping at Costco. It's sad that some people are that bitter and pathetic.

But yeah, it's a cute news story. Maybe not so newsworthy, but I'd take this kind of thing any day over the kind of negativity that typically dominates the news.

hasn't CNN learned yet that "warm and fuzzy" stories like this about Biden and /or the Obamas only make right wing haters even MORE hateful? I say keep them coming and let them wallow in their own misery!!

Costco is well known for paying employees a decent wage and not paying executive a outrageous salaries.

Despite low turnover and low employee theft, investors are angry that the store won't cut wages and benefits to squeeze maximum profits to line their pockets.

Did the VP buy any manufactured goods that were made in the USA? My guess is that the goods were made overseas by American companies.

  23. ThinkAgain: All of the GOP's policies are PROVEN FAILURES

We love Costco! They not only have great prices (we saved hundreds on the diapers and formula alone with our twins!), they treat their employees well and are more concerned with long-term stability and community involvement than making a quick buck to satisfy their investors.

@allen: "Apple pie purchase, really? How staged was that?"

Ever had one of Costco's apple pies? They bake them at the store – and are delicious!

@Alfred E. Neuman: "Obviously the Office of Vice President is profoundly important to the operation of the federal government."

Do a little research on the role VP Biden played in implementing the Recovery Act, its success and accountability. He's been a valuable asset to our country – keep up the good work, Mr. Biden!
