Sources: Obama and Boehner spoke Wednesday

(CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama spoke by phone Wednesday ahead of high-level fiscal cliff negotiations today on Capitol Hill, multiple sources told CNN.

Obama told Boehner that tax rates would go up on wealthy individuals in the new year and that there would be no deal regarding that aspect, a source familiar with the call said.

Another source familiar with the phone call said "the call was 28 minutes long. Hardly short or curt."

The website Politico, which first reported the call, described the men's conversation as "curt."

For once when a picture is shown of these two men would be nice to see them both in purple ties!

"Curt"? I guess they had to agree on something, and they agreed to make one another look like "our guy didn't cave". If they're talking, instead of having a stare down, I guess that's progress.

My gut feeling is this : Boehner isn't budging, period. He's not gong to let his "constituents" down . And don't forget that T party and the right wing evangelicals – LOL – IF Boehner is really seroius, he will compromise, and think it through. I guess I'm saying that IF I was Boehner, I would go with what the President wants to do, ( especially since his "party" won the election) This way, IF ( yes, I said IF ) everything Fails, then his "party" will do very well, not only in the mid-terms in 2014 – but their "party" will end up being a "winner" come 2016. BUT – ( I highly doubt it will turn out that way )
Boehner will fight to the bitter end, hence losing the mid-terms to the Dems, and end up losing in 2016. If CNN prints this, I will be surprised)

Tan Man has no leverage whatsoever. He's only obstructing the POTUS to save his measly job as the head of a party that is quickly becoming irrelevant as they cling to ideas that were popular 50 years ago but have no place in modern America

That's known as reaching an impasse. We have been there before, and we are there again.

Seeing as Boehner loves the healthy tanned look, Mr. Obama should offer him some time in a tropical location- especially if their talks fail to produce a solution because of the continued radical GOP hostage-taking mentality. Gitmo comes to mind.10-20 years perhaps.I would gladly support that use of my tax dollars.

BUT, the question is are they both really listening to what each other has to say, or is the President telling Bohner what to do and doesn't care what comes from the Republicans. Obama has proven not to be trust worthy, pass experiences has shown this to be true. Obama want to raise taxes first, then later talk about cutting the deficit. This plan was presented in the past and no fallow through was taken. I feel they should just let us fall of the cliff, if Obama can't be trusted , then wait until next years and fix everything the right way, making any changes set back to the fisrt of January 2013.

go off the cliff – then boner / mitch / & cantor and company can go home for Christmas – then start all over ( or shall I say "kick the can down the road" ) in January . If not much changes (other than the stock market might lose a cpl hundred points) the american voters will see that the GOP is really nothing but obstructionists.

Obama has put the republican party in a tuff spot....every way they may turn they are the bad guys to someone. Negotiate and compromise on taxes...their base will freak! Don't negotiate the country holds them accountable for any downside! Boehner knows The President has them and now It's all about saving face. Once they figure that out ...the deal is done. Notice we don't hear Cantor's squeaky little voice ....the big boys are now in charge and will clean up the pee party mess! Sorry tea party mess!
