CNN: U.S. Supreme Court looks at whether to take up same-sex marriage
U.S. Supreme Court justices will meet privately Friday for a closed-door conference to decide if they will accept any of 10 pending appeals, essentially over whether a fundamental constitutional right for gays and lesbians to marry exists. If they agree to hear the issue, oral arguments would be likely be held in March with a ruling by late June.

CNN: Sanders assails Wall Street CEOs for entitlement cuts
Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont who caucuses with the Democrats, derided Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, along with other Wall Street leaders, for pushing for cuts to entitlement programs as a part of the nation's budget negotiations.

The conversion therapy center being sued by gay men who paid the counselors to make them straight vowed it would continue to "assist those with unwanted same-sex attractions."

CNN: Bradley Manning says he considered suicide while in military custody
Army private Bradley Manning, charged in the largest leak of classified material in American history, spoke at length on Thursday about his treatment in military custody, saying he grew distressed and considered suicide. The hearing was held to consider a defense motion to have his case dismissed on grounds that his confinement so far, especially his time at the brig in Quantico, Virginia, has been harsh and has amounted to enough punishment.

CNN: Stop taking recalled cholesterol drug, FDA advises
The Food and Drug Administration advised concerned consumers Thursday to stop taking a popular cholesterol drug that may be contaminated with specks of glass if the pills came from one of 41 recalled lots. The recall of generic Lipitor was initiated nearly three weeks ago by Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, but this is the first time the FDA - or anyone else - has told consumers to stop taking the drug.


CNN: U.N. approves Palestinian 'observer state' bid
The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday endorsed an upgraded U.N. status for the Palestinian Authority, despite intense opposition from the United States and Israel. The resolution elevates their status from "non-member observer entity" to "non-member observer state," the same category as the Vatican, which Palestinians hope will provide new leverage in their dealings with Israel.

CNN: Egyptian draft constitution passes, despite fervent opposition
As the sun rose Friday over Cairo, the 85-person assembly charged with crafting the North African nation's new constitution gave their final approval. Having passed 234 articles, the document was - from their standpoint - complete. The draft is to be printed later Friday and presented to President Mohamed Morsy, said Houssam al-Ghiryani, head of the assembly. But that doesn't mean Egypt's crisis is over.

For the second time, an international tribunal has acquitted a former Kosovo prime minister and two others of abusing and killing Serbs, raising fears that the Thursday ruling could further strain tense relations between the two countries.

Jobless Americans have collected more than half a trillion dollars in benefits over the past five years. State and federal unemployment insurance programs have cost roughly $520 billion, according to a Congressional Budget Office report released Wednesday.

CNNMoney: GDP growth slows in India
The pace of economic growth in India slowed during the latest quarter, the government's ministry of statistics said Friday. Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of a nation's economic health, grew at a rate of 5.3% from June to September compared to the previous year, the government said.
