Rubio suggests ways to bridge 'opportunity gap'

(CNN) - Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida outlined elements of a platform to bridge what he termed the "opportunity gap" - a lack of favorable circumstances in which individuals could lift themselves into the middle class.

"One of the fundamental promises of America is the opportunity to make it to the middle class," Rubio said Tuesday, receiving a leadership award named in honor of the late conservative congressman, Cabinet secretary and GOP vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp.

First on CNN: Republican advocacy group to step up efforts to pressure Obama

Washington (CNN) - In the first advertising effort to support the Republicans in the ongoing fiscal cliff debate, the advocacy group Crossroads GPS will go on television Thursday trying to push the White House to offer more spending cuts as part of any deal. The group is buying $500,000 worth of time on national cable, including on CNN, as well on stations in the Washington area during the Sunday public affairs programs.

The group, part of the American Crossroads groups founded by Karl Rove, promises this is a "first step in a larger effort."

Democrats select governors association leadership

(CNN) - Democratic governors on Tuesday selected new leadership for the Democratic Governors Association. Gov. Peter Shumlin of Vermont will succeed Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley as chairman of the organization, while O'Malley becomes the group's finance chairman, the DGA announced.

Those selections and others were expected by Democratic insiders. The DGA works to recruit and support Democratic candidates for governor and assists Democratic incumbents running for re-election.

Conservatives blast Boehner tax increases; other Republicans withhold criticism

(CNN) - Leading conservatives blasted a controversial new House Republican proposal that breaks with years of GOP orthodoxy by calling for more taxes to be paid by wealthier Americans as part of a broader deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff.

But in a sign of how politically treacherous and awkward the offer has become, top Senate Republicans - many of them conservatives - withheld harsh criticism of the plan even as they refused to embrace it.

STAGNANT: FISCAL INSANITY? If insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result, then continuing negotiations on a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff might amount to little more than crazy talk. The same players are arguing about the same issue - taxes - in a repeat of budget showdowns of the past two years that failed to reach a comprehensive agreement. – Tom Cohen
